Nintendo Switch - Meh

King

So I don't actually own a Switch yet but I have played around with my friends and he and I share the following opinion. I felt it somewhat necessary to say this given that most reviewers seem to really be praising Nintendo for the Switch.

Firstly, the launch game selection for the Switch is simply too small. There really is no reason for me to get the Switch when a Wii U can play the new Zelda game. Most of the other titles are either shovelware or simply not enough to hold the system up on their own. Snipperclips ( I think thats the name) is a relatively good game but, again, not enough to hold the system up.

Secondly, some of the design decisions are really kind of poor. Im going to butcher the terminology here but stay with me.

  • The first issue here is the poorly thought on joycon + grip thing physical connectivity. If you insert the joycon the wrong way into the grip thing, it gets stuck...like REALLY stuck. It takes a lot of effort to take it out and could potentially damage the joycon. That's simply unacceptable, especially when its so easy to do.
  • Second issue is the fact that the controller grip you get with the system does not come with a usb port to allow you to charge your joycons while playing. You have to buy a whole different controller for this function...again, really dumb decision given how much the system is.
  • The UI is terrible. Im sorry but given how good the past Nintendo systems UIs were, the Switch is a huge step back. Its so very very bland and boring. Its like they didn't even go through any effort to make it interesting. It may seem like a small issue but it's really kind of sad given what they've done in the past.
  • Friend codes and friends list limit...neither of these are good. Friend codes are dumb and nobody wants them. A 300 person limit on your friends list is ALSO dumb considering we're in an age where networking is so huge.

All in all, the system really isn't worth it for me. There's not enough there for me to warrant a purchase until maybe Christmas this year, if not later.

All of the games that come out for it, whether 1st party or multi-platform, can be the best games of all time. But Nintendo has the nerve to create an artificial online paywall like Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo lost me as a potential customer when Tatsumi Kimishima said they would be doing that.

I think it depends on whether you own a Wii U or not. If you do own one then it isn't worth buying a Switch just yet. However, if you don't own one, you might as well buy a Switch. The price of the Wii U hasn't dropped despite that it has been discontinued.

While I do respect what you have to say, I do want to politely respond to your criticisms. I also do have a background in business, so you do get a fair perspective here.

Firstly, the launch game selection ... hold the system up.

If you look at the bigger picture however, I can see this as a good thing in the long-run (case in point, Nintendo 64). How it's possible is that more games will be released at a steady pace monthly instead of it being very sporadic like with the Wii U.

The first issue here is ... when its so easy to do.

It should be common sense where and how you are to attach the Joy-cons appropriately without having to second guess. Therefore I find this point to be more of a nit-pick. The click-sound made when attaching the Joy-cons however sounds very satisfying (more info: https://mlpforums.com/blog/2315/entry-21822-i-was-at-the-toronto-nintendo-switch-preview-tour-d/) :).

Second issue is the fact that ... how much the system is.

You have a good point there. However, Nintendo is not the only ones to not include a play and charge accessory with its console packaging. Case in point, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Xbox One. They also require customers to purchase a play and charge kit of sorts separately if they so wish to. It's nothing new.

The UI is terrible ... what they've done in the past.

Again an obvious nit-pick. #NoDerp (meant to also mean, "No duh") that it's like that as of now. As Nintendo did rush the Switch out to market it right now as a dedicated home/handheld hybrid video game console. Therefore it currently is bare-bones as of the time it launched. However, that doesn't mean the Switch is not capable of updating its UI with more features along the way. It should get much better in the upcoming holiday season.

Friend codes and friends list limit ... where networking is so huge.

I do agree with you there that friend codes and friend limits are annoying. However, if you look at the bigger picture, I can understand why Nintendo is doing this as of now. They are still testing the waters of a vast Online Service that they are providing as a way to prepare for a huge influx of new Switch users. So if they increase (or remove) the friend limit in the future, that would be great. Ditto for the friend codes. Though if the friend codes is an excuse that Nintendo will use as a way to differ itself from the competition, I could see why.

*facehoof* You didn't see that coming? You really didn't? It was inevitable and was to be expected (even though I personally wished it wasn't so too, but alas, it will be a thing in the Fall). However, I'm not too worried about it actually, as the annual-cost of the payed Nintendo Online services is said to be approx. $25 - 35 USD. That price range is a heck of a lot more affordable than the subscriptions for Microsoft and Sony's consoles ($50 - 60 USD in comparison).

At the moment, I do not have a Nintendo Switch yet as the launch line-up isn't too great for me right now, as I also can't afford to get one anyway, neither is it at the highest priority as I have more important things I need to get first before getting the Switch in the near-future.

If you still have more things to rant about the Switch for, by all means, tell us.

The fact that there is a fee for online services is ridiculous in itself. You'll have to for all the consoles on the market, but I don't have to on my PC. In my experience with having PS+ for the PS4, comparing it to the free online play on the PS3 is no different. Also, the money you give doesn't go the developers, but to the respective manufacturer. The fee is often referred to as the "peasant tax" for this very reason.

I might be putting a review on youtube about this some time soon; I've scored a switch, and it's hard to put Breath of the Wild down.

What I really don't like is that the Switch doesn't have a browser:  the Wii U and the 3DS do.  Heck, a simple Boox (a really cheap-o tablet-thingy that is meant to let you read books) has a browser.  Why shouldn't the Switch?
