To be fair, when you get paid that little and customers decide you don’t even deserve a wage (not tipping means they don’t get paid and are thus forced to work for free), you wouldn’t give a shit either.

Well, for starters, it's not my responsibility to pay their salary.  The food service industry is f*cked up, and the wage system sucks.  It's just unfair, no two ways about it.  It should be reformatted so that the servers just get paid at least frigging minimum wage.  But the fact that it sucks still doesn't make it my responsibility.  And don't misunderstand me--this is coming from someone who does tip.  My family and I always tip, because that's just the world we live in.  I just don't think servers who don't write orders down and then screw it up should be tipped.

Moreover, I'm just not sure what else you're getting at with the rest of that post.  So... are you saying that the servers are apathetic because people don't tip... and because of that, they don't give a sh*t... and thus don't write the order down?  I'm sorry, I'm just not understanding.  Whenever I get a server who doesn't write it down, it's absolutely clear that they are trying to show off their memory and go the extra mile to show that they are good at their job.  These are the servers who are extremely zealous, not apathetic.  But it's just a foolish thing to do.  Every single time I've had a server do this, the order gets screwed up because they forgot something or told the cook the wrong thing.  It's just not smart to trust your memory, especially when you've got a customer who has to special order stuff and leave things off, like I do.  And I'll go ahead and state for the record that I have enormous respect for food servers.  I could never handle that job.  In fact, I pretty much have enormous respect for every single person who does any job, because they're all hard.  I don't think I'm being unreasonable by just wanting servers to write it down.  I don't think I'm the bad guy, here.

Sorry if I misunderstood you, but I'm just not sure what point you're trying to make.

I get that it shouldn’t be that way, but sadly it is. So when you don’t tip you make waitresses work for free more or less and thus they are going to apathetic.
