Why Shining Armor is supposed to be a jock not a nerd (another rant)

Okay, so apparently it's now canon that Shining Armor was a nerd in high school according to one of those MLP comics. Well, newsflash, that doesn't make any sense!!! I can't be the only one who always thought Shining Armor was obviously a jock in high school. Cadence was clearly the popular cheerleader chick and Shining Armor was the football-playing jock. It's very obvious. I mean, just look at this small clip:

Does that not look like a guy who was a jock in high school? I think it does. Definitely doesn't look like a nerd. I mean, seriously, it would only make absolutely perfect sense that Shining Armor was a jock. Honestly, I think whoever wrote that comic just made him a nerd so all the nerdy bronies could read it and be like "yeahhhh he's a nerd like me!!!" and they could relate to him. Well too bad that's obviously completely out of Shining Armor's character. Yeah, I'm not buying it. Shining Armor was a jock in my head canon, and I will continue to think of him as such. If you wanna hate on me, go ahead, whatever.

Nerds can play football and be athletic...

And really, we know very little about Shining Armor that can be used to say if being a nerd or jock is out of character.

Yes, because someone who is nerdy and plays DnD obviously plays football and gets hot popular girls. I find that hard to believe.

This.

Also, Shining Armor is in a family that's... kind of been heavily hinted as nerdy? I heard something about his parents being scientists, and take a look at Twilight. If you ask me it makes tons of sense. ^_^"

There's never ever been anything in the show hinting that he's even slightly nerdy. In fact, it's the complete opposite. I'm not buying it.

As a loner to both groups in my time in high school, I got a unique "outside looking in" perspective, and as much as I hate to say it, the stereotype is kinda true, at least it was at my school. The line between jocks and nerds was pretty well defined.

I was too out of shape to be athletic in high school, but if I were there again today, I'd probably be athletic, but I wouldn't be a jock. I'd probably just play sports for my own enjoyment and health. I have trouble socializing due to pretty bad SA, so other aspects of being a high school athlete don't appeal - or downright terrify - me.

Not sure what your point is, sorry :/

Why are you so hung up on labels? Not all nerd play D&D, not all jocks play football. What kind of idyllic fantasy high school world do you live in?

I never said all nerds play D&D and all jocks play football.

Here's why Shining Armor's being a 'nerd' makes sense.

1. As I already stated earlier, his entire family is made up of nerds. Twilight is a bookworm and master at magic and their parents have been implied as scientists.

2. As has been stated above people change as they grow older. In the past they'll have different interests and actions as in the future or present. This goes for both Cadence and Shining Armor.

3. It's a bloody comic cover. You haven't even read the whole comic yet. You're going by the tiny teaser that has been supplied, therefore you don't have enough information to back up some of your arguments.

4. Just because Shining Armor was into what could be called "Equestria Dungeons and Dragons" doesn't mean he was nonathletic or weak. I know plenty of nerds who love to play Basketball or Ultimate Frisbee. People have interests and sometimes those interests will make them appear differently.

5. This is their show and their story, not yours. They have free reign over each character. For all you know this could have been the plan all along.

6. The message portrayed here is excellently done. They are going into this with the concept of Shining Armor already being the cool big brother. It's a perfect set up. If it's a show for younger children, then it displays that it's not just the people who are popular from the start who become cool in the future. (Frankly it's the other way around a lot of the time.) The lesson is brilliantly prepared. They took what is normally a cliche'd moral and improved on it. That's smart, if you ask me, and makes tons of sense.

Most of the time jocks become the minimum wage workers and the nerds become the successful ones. Just because somebody is a nerd doesn't mean they aren't Athletic, I was a programmer/hacker throughout High school but I was heavily into (And very good at) Basketball. While at the same time I spent a lot of my free time gaming and reading.

I used to play basketball, and I actually could have been pretty good at it, except for the fact that I'm short and scrawny, so I was shit at defense. I was pretty good at shooting though, I made three-pointers fairly easily.

Yeah, people can fit into more than one group. Shining Armour couldn't be a general or whatever he is without being smart as well. He needs both wits and strength.

Saying that "jocks" "pick up" the "hot girls" is a bit general as well; it's implying that girls are supposed to be treated like trophies that the "jocks" parade around, something that I cannot agree with. D:

Anyways, in short, labels mean nothing. Actions, not names. Anyone has the capability to be an ass. XD
