My Thoughts On the WiiU

Colon Leftbracket

So the WiiU seems to be coming out soon and man time flies. I remember when I was still calling it next gen, it feels like just yesterday.

Anyway the WiiU seems to have an interesting library of upcoming games, though no big hitters for me outside of Pikmin 3.

Though Pikmin being one of the big early titles really has me thinking, thinking back to the Nintendo GameCube. Now if you don't know I love that adorable little indigo box (yes I did not buy black because I was a little hipster shit as a kid). Despite many people's criticism, it is probably my favorite console of all time. Its just something that I can identify with from my childhood because I did not have a Nintendo 64 like all the cool kids. It was SNES for lil' Colon until the PS2 and NGC came around.

I used to be very doubtful of the WiiU. In fact I dreaded its release, but now that I'm seeing comparisons in my head with the GameCube it seems better. Now I highly doubt this console will turn the tides and put Nintendo back on top again, but I see it more as a fun lesser console, a la GameCube.

What I loved about the GameCube was that it had a less hardcore library, but not super baby casual like most of the Wii line up we've seen. It had more memorable titles like Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Mario Sunshine, and more non-Nintendo niche titles like Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, Resident Evil 4, TimeSplitters 2 and Killer7 (admittedly these were multi-platform, but were far superior on the NGC imo). There are things in the GameCube library that I am still catching myself up with after all these years, so that's how you know that a console has done its job is if it has you coming back.

Most people seem to want that next great age of Nintendo and a return to their precious Nintendo 64 days. I feel that won't happen! Sorry, but the system will probably be outdated within a few years by the competition. But I personally am still optimistic because I see it more of a return to the GameCube days which I suppose for me I so much better.

Am I Going to Get It At Launch? Meh, I want to see this console run its course a bit to confirm my suspicions but I may end up getting it eventually. Holiday? Seems unlikely. I have no idea what on earth I'll be getting for Christmas but I doubt it will be a WiiU, maybe a 3DS since I'm rather impressed with it lately.

But if you are picking it up that's fine too. After all, I'll need people like you telling me if you feel its worth buying! :P

I'll defiantly be picking it up, I am more inclined to Nintendo then the "pretenders to the throne."(j/k, but not really) will the Wii U be out-classed by the completion when they unveil their next-gen consoles? More then Lilkely by a technological standpoint, but in terms of actual games to play, doubtful. Despite the Wii catering to the more casual side of gaming, Nintendo still managed to deliver some great, fun experiences through it.

But I'll defiantly let you or anyone(pony) else know if it's worth writing home about on launch. I haven't bought arkham city yet cause I knew it'd be coming to Wii U, Zombie U looks... Zombie-rific, but most likely it'll be a "launch window" game and not an actual launch tittle.

@, Alright that's a decent standpoint. I used to be the same way between the previous console generation where despite the PS2 having the most impressive console library ever, I still preferred the GameCube since most of my favorite games at the time were on the NGC and (especially with that awesome controller) they just felt better.

Like I'd play Gauntlet Dark Legacy on the GameCube for days and then my brother got a PS2 and he got Gauntlet on it and we played it and it just felt... off. My brother and I would argue which is better between Sony and Nintendo, it was interesting.

Unfortunately in the current console generation I couldn't even find a Wii to buy for months so I settled with a 360. I eventually got my hands on the Wii but it was just too different. I still can't stand to play games that aren't completely motion controlled with the WiiMote and it gets me a tad pissed when there isn't an alternative. (No More Heroes for example really didn't gain much from the WiiMote controls and could've used a GameCube controller alternative). I feel that the game library reflected that and there were just many games that didn't want to deal with the WiiMote so they just abandoned Nintendo.

With the WiiU much of this can be mended with the new controller. Though a tad gimmicky, I can see it fully functioning in any game environment and then some. My only gripe is that it seems like for most multiplayer the other people will be stuck with WiiMotes. Apparently, the console can support up to 2 pads though now launch window games support this feature and it isn't known how much these controllers cost (my guess is around $100, yikes!). What kinda worries me is that this hurts local multiplayer which was the best thing on the GameCube.

I really look forward to feedback on the console. This reminds me of about a year ago when I wanted to buy a 3DS but I did not have the money to gamble on the console. I waited through months of feedback and now with the library thickening up I plan on maybe picking one up this holiday. Who knows perhaps around this time of year next year I'll be forking out money for a WiiU to get some title announced at E3 that I felt was a must have. I really do look forward to the console, but I might just sit on the sidelines for a while.

@, Yeah a friend brought it over to my house. I REALLY expected it to suck REALLY badly because this was before I was a cynical bastard and read online reviews like crazy before making a purchase, but I still expected the worst in games, particularly shooters.

But yeah my friend and I played that game in one sitting and were just so confused on so many levels, but it felt so good.

I do regret that since I beat it in one sitting I never went back to buy it myself. Its a harder game to find these days (most GameCube games are), but I did find it at my local store for $7. Too bad I didn't have my money on me. I wonder if its still there?

I'm a huge fan in Suda51 despite his recent titles being a bit lacking in my opinion (and I thought Suda x Tara Strong was going to be a dream come true).

I can't say that I'm looking forward to the WiiU, maybe once it has a price drop, model upgrade, or a greater color variety, but at the moment I feel somewhat cynical about the console.

Like all Nintendo systems, the Wii's first party titles were awesome (and I know there are some great third party ones, but I've yet to play them..), but the mountain of third party shovel-ware games that came out kind of soured my opinion of the system. Hopefully developers won't be creating n64 games on a console 3 generations later! :)
