New hard drive... or new laptop?

My current laptop is working fine now, after a chkdsk (2 bad clusters) and a defrag overnight, but I really REALLY hope my laptop can last long enough through school.

 

If all comes to worse:

 

I wanna get a new laptop, but I am still cautious about stuff that works on Windows 8. I still wanna use stuff like Steam and iTunes, but I see mixed results from a Google search.

 

But on the other hand, I wanna be able to use Windows 7 Home Premium again on a new "bad cluster"-free hard drive. Though, I don't know if problems are going to occur again on the same laptop.

 

I do see Windows 7 computers for sale at FutureShop, but almost none of them have dedicated graphics...

Honestly, windows 8 has had lots of reports of lost data and corrupted saves. Though it is a person to person thing, I prefer windows 7 more.

 

Now as for your laptop, it seems as if everything is fine now, just do a disk frag. Every two weeks if you're saving a lot. If the harddrive is just going bad you can either get it repaired, or what I would do, is get a SSD SATA III if your laptop is capable with it and get your OS on that. (This also depends on how much GB you plan on getting with it, as you may just get enough for the OS and school. Than save the harddrive for games) Start up isn't even a thing. If you don't know how to do it just go to a computer store and they should do it for cheap.

 

So end, keep laptop get SSD. (Probably SATA II if it is an older laptop) External or Internal is of your choosing.

Those still work in Windows 8. They won't in Windows RT because that's for ARM processors while those are x86 applications, but x86 Windows 8 is backwards compatible all the way back to MS-DOS. Trust me, I use Windows 8.

 

Do whatever you feel is best.

Your laptop should be fine now after that chkdsk. Just keep an eye on the HDD's performance and make sure to keep routine backups of all your files. 

 

Unless, of course, you secretly really want a brand new laptop! :) In which case, I'd say don't let Windows 8 discourage you. It can do basically everything Win7 can, and more. Consider Windows 8 an upgrade. Most of the hate that is gets is largely unfounded.

I respectfully disagree. Windows 8 was a cruel joke from Satan.
