Even after the Chernobyl disaster 33 years ago, there are still ten RBMK-1000 reactors operating.

They've all been retrofitted with new safety measures, including improved control rod designs. That said, they are slowly in the process of decommissioning those sites. Just about every reactor in the world that generates electricity uses graphite moderated/water cooled systems, but Canada's CANDU is the safest byfar. I live between two of them. One in Pickering and one in Bruce county.
Also, little known fact, the last reactor at Chenobyl was shut down in 2000.
