Your laptop should be fine now after that chkdsk. Just keep an eye on the HDD's performance and make sure to keep routine backups of all your files.
Unless, of course, you secretly really want a brand new laptop!
In which case, I'd say don't let Windows 8 discourage you. It can do basically everything Win7 can, and more. Consider Windows 8 an upgrade. Most of the hate that is gets is largely unfounded.
