If Equestria Girls had began as a completely separate entity, than no one would have watched it, they couldn't have the interesting magical conflicts that they've had and, if you've noticed, as each new installment is released, the ties it has from the main series are becoming less major.
In short, they need to keep the series feeling familiar to keep fans of the main series engaged, while introducing enough new content to stand on it's own 2 legs.
They can do this by making the exploring the human world and making it interesting in its own way outside of the fantastical elements.

Songco was hired to be a story editor on the CBS sitcom "The Great Indoors". I think Lewis is a writer for that show as well. I don't think either of them would have the time or even want to bother going back to writing for low budget toy commercials.
-
How do we know it isn't someone who needs Twilight's help in a conflict that Twilight wouldn't want to get involved in in the first place? That would be more interesting than just having it be a villain.
But this is pretty stupid overall. He builds up this entire theory and then jumps to conclusions at the end.

Video game animated series have a decent track record though. MLP doesn't need to drastically change itself to start taking inspiration from Mario, heck most of it would just come in the form of way more interesting new locations and gimmicks (i.e. the toy stuff Hasbro forces into the show, The Cutie Map).
The slice of life plots could be left the same, the characters can still be the focus since it is the biggest strength MLP has over Mario. The Mario influence should really only take hold on action/adventure episodes.
-
It would probably better play to the strengths of the series and what it is trying to accomplish.
In many ways Mario shares a lot of similarities with MLP on a surface level. The character design, world design, tone, and audiences are similar. There is also the element of "a story built around a gimmick" that exists in both series. It is able to work past many problems MLP has with revolving staff, "anything goes" world design, world building, gimmick integration.
Yes, Mario is a game, but the way it often tells its stories is still similar enough that it can be compared to MLP (the box in Season 4 feels very much like a Mario story concept), and there are many times where the plot is MORE than just Peach getting kidnapped like Sunshine, Galaxy 1, or any of the RPG games.
I feel the biggest hurdle is that the writers and artists at DHX as well as the toy designers and Hasbro execs may not care enough to get creative to come up with interesting ideas and interesting executions of them to make this work.

I suppose they're making it out so magic can exist either from Equestria and in the human world (the mane five seemed to have magic that they used to protect Twilight). I think it'd be important to give a magic using villain who's originally from earth to show that they do need magic after all.
But without magic the villain would have been powerless. Wouldn't it have been better to have a villain originally from Earth that didn't use magic be stopped by magic to show that they do need magic after all?

Don't you see the world purposefully trying to be mundane as kind of a problem? We see smartphones and such in the films, so as long as it keeps the "mundane" character of the world, I see no issue.
-
I guess for them, since the EQG world seems to only use technology as a minor characteristic of its setting. It kind of shows that EQG tries too hard to be normal and winds up being a less interesting version of our world. It's pretty sci-fi, and I think that moves away from the "normal" world the EqG movies seem to be going for.
Oh and in case you think somehow robots would suddenly make their world not resemble ours, please understand that this exists.
But you are right, if the series is moving away from exploring how the mane cast would live in a normal world to another superhero esque series.
-
I'm not sure that the human world should have its own fantastical aspects; it's ostensibly meant to resemble ours at least to an extent, and thus far all worldbuilding has established that all magic which appeared in the human world is an aberration brought over from Equestria. With that said, I'd honestly prefer if the series put more focus on its own characters and their own lives, as I really want to know how the mane six's interests in Equestria translate to a non-magical world, and especially how Sunset's adjusting to life away from the reality she grew up in. Still, I wish the series would do a little bit more with Sunset's own connection to Equestria - is she going to make up with Celestia? Does she miss having magic? Stuff like that. Either way, Legend of Everfree's direction of "superheroes fighting alien monsters" has very little appeal to me, and seems like one of the least interesting directions this series could be taken in.
Robots and advanced AI systems wouldn't be fantastical.
-
To keep uping the ante with the conflicts in each movie, they have to have Equestrian magic involved. Otherwise, what will they be dealing with? Pure high school drama?
Robots, mutants, crazy lab experiments, aliens, and Pokémon-esque monsters could exist in their world.
I guess you got that already because you were talking about Filthy Rich building death bots.

I agree to an extent. The tie to Equestria should always be present, it was the series' beginning, but I think they need to start focusing more on the Human world itself and what makes it different from Equestria. I for one really hope they reveal that type Human world DOES have it's own magic, it's just different, and therein lies the draw, it's NOT like Equestria, and that will be interesting to explore. The Everfree forest alone could holds all manner of secrets.
But the biggest way they can differ the two series is make it more Sci-Fi based rather than constantly relying on magic, I mean technology basically is our equivalent to magic so I don't see why it wouldn't work.

There is no comparison. Sonic '06 was too ambitious what with Sonic Team wanting to incorporate numerous playstyles, many of which weren't even necessary to begin with, and trying to finish a game within a ridiculous schedule limit all because Sega wanted it released in time for the PS3's launch that year.
Equestria Girls does have its faults--I won't deny this as even I can see that--and may not be for everyone, but if you give it a chance and see past the tropes, marketing, and other nitpicks, it is actually very entertaining and does well with the characters they use along with the magic lore, and finally moving on from the high-school setting.
It really isn't a good argument as I can do it too, there are some good points in 06 it is just bogged down by glitches and an overly ambitious goal.Sonic 06 does have its faults--I won't deny this as even I can see that--and may not be for everyone, but if you give it a chance and see past the glitches, crappy playstyles, and other nitpicks, it is actually very entertaining and does well with the characters they use along with the Soleanna lore.

I don't necessarily mean that the series needs to have boring high school drama as a focus nor do I mean that the tie to Equestria should be gone completely due to how important of a role magic plays in this series, but I do think the series should start introducing conflicts and villains from its own world. We know so little about the EQG world that we don't know much about it besides the fact that it resembles ours and doesn't have magic (or at least not Equestrian magic), so there is so much potential to explore what that world has to offer.
Robots, mutants, crazy lab experiments, aliens, and Pokémon-esque monsters could exist in their world. Relying on the tie to Equestria to provide any interesting conflict only serves to make the EQG world look so dull and prevents it from having more of its own identity.

Tried to do a realistic human world and made it boring in the process
- Characters are more subdued to make them more serious

It really wouldn't matter much to me, it would just be very awkward now that Equestria Girls was introduced. Admittedly I would find it more interesting if the humans just lived like we do.

More "real" Fighting IMO.
apart from the S4 finale, which is a very noticeable outlier (and had censorship issues of hasbro nixing things like tirek being punched), there's very little actual outright fighting in this show. For example, dragonquest, the situation was resolved by just running away after telling off garble (one reason that gauntlet of fire was so cathartic). The only real "fighting" in the S6 finale was Starlight being thrown by chrysalis, and the S5 fight was more of a comedic thing with starlight and twilight shooting lasers while the other easily blocked them till they got tired.
Look at legend of everfree as well: despite the entire premise being "The mane six get super powers" and the climax being a fight against another super powered individual, its NOT a fight, not really: the mane six just throw things at the vines surrounding the camp and never actually attack glory, and the only "attack' that glory does is tripping rainbow dash, which is played off as humorously as possible by the inclusion of a Bowling ball strike sound as she trips into the other 5.
I'm not saying the show would suddenly get grimdark, but we'd get much more fights akin to the S4 finale or the fights in the comics if it was PG for the action episodes.
We might also finally find out officially what happened to AJ's parents
Danny Phantom, Avatar, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, and Courage the was rated TV-Y7 and those had way more action than Legend of Everfree.

You know they could just put her in prison instead.

I am happy with everything said in the OP, but I would like to see Twilight learning to become a princess more and possibly learning friendship lessons again, Spike actually doing something with his desire to be a superhero or a knight, and more action/adventure episodes.
-
I want the show to run way longer, especially now that the Guardians of Harmony toyline that is pretty cool, I would like them to keep the show running so that toyline can keep introducing crazy new concepts.
Just because the show COULD have a satisfying ending now, doesn't mean it has to.

Ehh I found it pretty darn boring, there is little character development outside of Twilight worrying about Midnight Sparkle, Flash getting over his relationship with Twilight, and the romance between Timber and Twilight.
The fight scene with the vines is pretty cool, and I do like the scene where they fight the vines and take down Gloriosa, but it seems like the movie is doing everything it can to reach its running time.

I would prefer they didn't, it would be difficult to take the series seriously trying to believe that they are even trying to keep their magic secret anymore.

https://mlpforums.com/topic/151147-could-eqg-work-without-magic-being-the-source-of-the-conflict/
I even made my own thread about the issue, since I think it could totally work especially after
they keep their superpowers at the end of Legends of Everfree
It would likely require the series to resort to sci-fi and science fantasy for its supernatural villains, but other than that there really isn't a reason the series needs to keep its connection to Equestria as a major plot point at all other than the writers being uncreative or Hasbro insisting it on them.
I even challenged myself to come up with a plot that would follow the typical Equestria Girls formula, but feature no magic in it. It can be done, it is a little difficult though.
-
I don't think the characters will graduate next film even though they should. I recall seeing several sources claiming that EQG was going to have 6 installments. I'd personally love if Hasbro was ballzy enough to have the characters graduate into college, even moreso if not the entire cast goes and graduates and we just follow part of the original cast into college.

What plot would I particularly want? Human Shimmer and The Dazzling to return. But if I was writing this...
Human Sunset Shimmer, up and coming world prodigy scientist, historian and archaeologist, having studied under world famous Doctor Whoves Time-Turner and world explorer and archaeologist Daring-Do, has discovered startling anomalies occurring in the part of the world around a certain school. Approached by The Dazzlings, they tell her an untruthful account of what has been happening and how she can stop a magical catastrophe from happening.
Using Equestrian magical energy captured by a device of her own devising, with the Dazzlings knowledge of the occult, she uses her genius to correlate data and such and discovers a second kind of magical energy, Human world magic, and is eventually lead to the Lost City of Atlantis, where the Dazzlings hope to regain their powers(and more) by stealing a lost mystical artefact of Human make. Assembling a crack team of specialists consisting of herself, her best friend Starlight Glimmer(mission coordinator), Professor Whoves Time-Turner, Daring-Do, and possibly some new characters, along with her newest recruits the Dazzlings, they race the Mane 7 to Atlantis. Human Shimmer seizes the artefact for herself and turns on the Dazzlings, knowing they were going to turn on her.
Some background lore on Human magic, why there is a portal in Equestria which leads to the Human world, and why the Human magic went away.
There would be a sub-plot regarding the Dazzlings who have been frequently receiving aid from a Human Witch - Hydia, and it was her who tells them how they can manipulate Sunset Shimmer and claim the artefact. Zecora could also appear as the Rival of Hydia who helps the Mane 7 oppose Sunset Shimmer and her plans. Maybe throw in some mythical/supernatural beings along the journey, like Discord perhaps.
There is no teen activity as the focus, so it will never be used as a plot, also it seems a little packed to be a plot for EQG.
I will always want a villain that DOESN'T use magic (or at least not at first) or is something from their world. I really think it would be fun if Equestria Girls had sci-fi elements in it.
The series relies too heavily on the tie to Equestria.
in Equestria Girls
Oh wow did I really say that? I must have been tired. What I meant to say was "I believe the human world can be built on its own outside of its tie to Equestria for fantastical elements."
The human world doesn't need to be tied to Equestria to seem extraordinary, it can just basically do everything conceivable in our world that doesn't involve magic. Half the enemies Superman and Batman face don't involve magic or a complete butchering of the laws of reality.
