If anyone remembers Fandom (previously known as Wikia), then you know the platform is in a bit of a pickle. Why is that, you ask? Well, the platform site is run by staff that rule the site with an iron fist, not caring for Wikis that are abandoned and insist on having users adopt abandoned Wikis, especially if it's for nefarious reasons by opening the floodgates to allow trolls to run amok with litttle repercussions. And even allow the use of VPNs to circumvent around global bans with ease, which shows how tone deaf Fandom has become. And their staff are devoid of any reasoning as well, which shows how little they care for their community. Now, I know what you're thinking; what does that have to do with any of this? Well, have a look at this, though just to give a warning that it's likely going to trigger folks so proceed with caution.
To give this a long story short, an admin doubling as a bureaucrat was defending a user's unforgivable actions from, to put it simply, assocating with a minor on Discord. Shocker, I know. And when a Fandom staff stepped in well, let's just say the flames only got hotter, and the other staff at Fandom started to enact global ban on folks left and right as a form of extreme damage control in order to silence everyone regarding the incident instead of changing their ToS altogether. Sadly, I was one of those folks that got the ultimatum because they sure as hell will not listen and instead resort to power tripping, which was basically the last straw. And it shows how little they value their own community as a whole. Because of this, it's likely caused a ripple effect towards other Wikis, though most are likely too indifferent about it, which isn't surprising.
Surprisingly enough, this wasn't talked about throughout Twitter/X or even Bluesky. Even bigger YouTubers don't exactly talk about it too much, or are not too fully aware about the Fandom's awful nature. Especially when it comes to minors that use this platform that could potentially fall prey to other users that would do horrific actions towards them, and the Fandom either does nothing about this, or do something about this but more out of pragmatic reasons. Even then, Fandom is willing to silence any and all controversy by any means necessary as to avoid any and all form of legal action against them.
And granted, most folks on many Wikis are powerless against Fandom because they rule the site with an iron fist, and I can't fault them. But surrendering themselves to them only gives them more power for them to openly abuse unless they officially cut ties from Fandom and move on to different sites, namely WikiDot, Wiki.gg or any other independent Wiki sites.
So for those who are familiar with Fandom, or have never heard of Fandom before, the site has long since been glorified with users who predate on others and be able to make new accounts on a whim because VPNs fall into the wrong hands very often, and they also allow trolls to vandalize bigger Wikis in case founders and users leave their platform for their ill-gotten gains for the sake of revenue. And if they were to somehow find a way to block AdBlockers of all kinds (uBlock included) in order to shove in more of their intrusive ads, then the future of Fandom is looking incredibly bleak.
That's just my two cents, but you people will get the idea.
