  1. People seem really confused by me praising the latest MLP episode.

  2. It's weird to see people here complaining that certain episodes aren't "final" enough. Are you not entertained?

If you try to give closure to a show that didn't need it, you get an ending that has nothing to do with what the show was about. Or, in this case, a show about friendship ending with a story about who will rule the country.

Well, I agree about that one. I still think Twilight as principal of Friendship School is more suitable for her character arc. The story about ruling and royal stuffs should belong to S4.

Am I the only one who find Spike and Rarity's "conclusion arc" is more satisfying than Twilight overcome her Twilighting to become a ruler of Equestria?:kirin:

which confuses me a little because it's wildly inconsistent and mostly tells self-contained stories.

Then people just complain about writing and continunity for nothing, those poor show analysts.:twi: If the inconsistent is just a norm then they should just turn off their brain and enjoy the show like some casual dumb fun Saturday cartoons...

Just because the inconsistent happens more than often, doesn't mean it's acceptable and people want better things (what's better is debatable):dash: The show has set the bar for itself and there's no going back.:yeahno:

Anyway, let see whether the finale can make or break the show...:mustache:

Because people expect any finale of any show that have any plot, arcs or any progression at all should have some decent closures. That’s the minimum requirement for a good show, starting out interesting, building up something and wrapping thing up properly, and people who invested for the show for over 5 years must have some expectations, hopes and dreams, cant they? If Mlp is like Tom & Jerry where cat-mouse story can repeat with no ends, people will like it for different reason and have different expectations. I dont know this will explain people’s complain or not but that’s just my thought.

  6. "A Horse Shoe-In"

    Entertainment: 5/10
    Characters: 7/10
    Themes: 9/10
    Story: 8/10
    Overall: 73/100

This is good, but I found Trixie's rambling annoying, so I gave "Entertainment" a weaker score to compensate.

  7. Last week, I posted my review for She Talks to Angel. Tonight, an updated version has been uploaded! Happy reading! :D

  8. Common Ground is one of the best Dash episodes of the show. A shame that 246G is nowhere near that caliber in quality.

If you read my comments in previous season 9 episodes then you would know that i enjoy majority episodes of this season and still give them nice scores. I just feel the staffs dont give that much efforts for the final season as I expected them to.

  12. Done with Trivial Pursuit:

    Spoiler

+ Twilight's character arc was satisfying. Despite being unsympathetic, it was easy to see where she was coming from. And because she did some bad things, getting a bunch of comedy at her expense was quite rewarding, and the same for realizing her terrible mistake. Very likely won't win Trivia Trot, but gets more out of it.

+ Many of the faces were really funny, especially Crazy!Twilight.

+ A lot of really good humor post-TT break.

    + Satisfying moral.

+ Despite a very light, stretched plot, it was paced well.

+ Applejack and Dash's competitive rivalry was really funny, especially Granny's quip after AJ missed an easy Zap Apple one to FS and Bulk. (Bulk high-5'ing FS a little too hard was the funniest moment of the episode.)

+ Pinkie wanted to win for Twi, but also have fun.

    - But she came across as too random and dimwitted at times.

    - Pinkie's crazy "TWIPIE!" face was way too creepy and not funny.

    - Many jokes early didn't make sense or were too gross.

    - The book was an obvious McGuffin. Pinkie's DQ came from a rule that made sense, but many other rules, like sleeping and minor taunts, were too outta left field, even for an episode this light in plot.

As fun as Trivial Pursuit's second half was, a lot of the first half didn't go over well, and when you have an episode with an extremely simple story, the jokes need to work very well as a whole. That doesn't happen.

It's a fine return to form after 246G, but worse than the worst S9A episode, Going to Seed. Dropping it down my list, from B to B- (from #82 to #113).

Anyone who play a dota 2 match with a bad teammate who didn't even take the game seriously will relate to Twilight a little bit. :P What make this ep more tolerable than Matter of Principal or Non-Compete Clause is characters acting like jerk didn't get what they want and what they did is nothing really serious. Comedy helps this ep a lot. If your story is bad, at least make it really funny and don't take it too seriously, people might turn their brain off and enjoy it.:dash:

  17. Episode 19 done! :yay:

    Spoiler

This was a LOT better than what I expected!

Rarity’s characterization here can be compared to that of Sonic Rainboom. However, instead of her vanity, it’s her envy for Gabby. She enjoyed spending her time with Spike and felt jealous of Gabby, fearing that she could lose that time. Like in SR, Rarity’s bad side here was thoroughly explored while not making her unlikeable or out of character, starting with the small and working hard as she could so he spends that time with her. If it succeeded, then the status quo stays the same.

But Spike’s broadening horizons by becoming a close friend with Gabby meant he was growing, and his friendships around him were maturing. He spent a lot of time with her and helped her grow into a better pony. But with Gabby now in his life, he can further connect with other species. Griffonstone’s reputation isn’t the best; to bring Gabby there helps him understand the decreasing prejudice against dragons and connect with someone on a deeper, more mature level.

Also, in the past, there was implication that Rarity occasionally took advantage of him. For most of the series, the friendship between him and a Rarity was in his point of view. For the first time, we see it in hers. By focusing the friendship on her here, we can connect to her beyond the surface and focus on how important his presence and friendship meant to HER. Going back on how she felt she took it for granted calls back those criticisms, and Haber very wisely and cleverly responds constructively to them, making her do things she wouldn’t do if it were someone else, but due to their strong bond, we can see where she’s coming from and empathize with her when she does bad. To be called out by a Twilight was a major wake-up call, solidifying her own doubts of whether they will truly make up or not (suggested by her to start the third act). Friendships change, but it doesn’t mean the good time will end.

This is Rarity’s best episode of the show. If it’s her last, a phenomenal conclusion. :D

P.S.: Here is my current order of S9 episodes from best to worst, with grades and placement. Early-aired episode’s minus 21 included!

  22. So the writers just have absolutely no idea what to do with Pinkie Pie, huh

    1. Lambdadelta

      @Them's Seeing Ponies

      Quote

Pinkie doesn't function the way the rest of the six do, and I think the writing staff struggles with this nowadays; they want to prove to the peripheral fandom that they're pumping out an emotional and 'mature' series, but they can't use Pinkie in the same way, nor can they replicate the brisk, comedic Craig McCracken-esque style that fit Pinkie so well in the earlier seasons.

It's the fault of Pinkie character design in the first place that hinder her future character development, or... the incompetent of the writers?:lostit: Every original cast in early seasons is some cartoon archtype characters you can find in TV Trope, Fluttershy is the shy one, Spike is the butt-monkey, Rarity is fashionista etc then eventually, they changed to something more than what stereotype define them but still keep their charms. What did they do to Pinkie? They made her the best character in Pinkie Pride then make her stupid in Filly Vanilli (the episode right next to Pinkie Pride), and they were written by the same writer, that shows how they handle Pinkie. Maud used to be a joke character just to add dry humor to the show, and look what she is now, a rock specialist, befriend with Starlight, she loves her sister but can get tired of her shit sometime, got a boyfriend and smile more than often, that's the progression, what are their excuses?:unamused: She isn't even the main character!

In the movie, Pinkie can work in comedic and dramatic moments just as fine as everyone else, I dare to say she is one of the best part of the movie (and I even dare to say she should be main character of the movie instead of Twilight Sparkle). If they cant make her funnier, then make her deeper. If you want a character grow, put them into a tree and throw a bunch of rock at them, keep doing that and it will works. Throw a reality checks to a happy-go-lucky character can strengthen their character, but I think the writer afraid of throwing any rock, remember Yakity-Sax?:mustache: Status Quo is so unbreakable in season 9.

In short, I blame the writers.

The Last Laugh is the proof that they really didnt know what to do with Pinkie Pie. Pinkie Pie is one of favorite mane 6 and i'm a bit sad with how they are doing with her. Season 9 didn't really feel like a final season at all, beside the 2-parters. My last straw is Starlight (my another favorite, if they do a shitty job to her character story arc, I will riot.

  24. The cancellation of cartoons sucks. No matter how good, mediocre, or bad they get or become, giving it some form of closure allows it to wrap up in some way. Leaving it hanging leaves so many "what ifs" and "what could it becomes."

Except Allen Gregory. Fuck that abomination!

  25. A few days ago, I wrote about how there may be some changes to my order. Before I go to bed, I'm gonna give you the scoop:

    1. Bats! and Daring Don't were graded D (second-worst, bad) and F+ (second-worst, terrible), respectively. Now I traded their grades and places. Debating whether S&P or Don't's the worst in the category.
    2. A Royal Problem's grade improves from D+ (poor) to C- (below-average), jumping from best D+ episode to third-worst C-.
    3. The Crystalling stays in the B range, gradually improving into the third-best.
    4. Non-Compete Clause creeps past MMMystery into the second-worst D- episode.
    5. And since I'm currently set, some Season 9 spoilers:
      Spoiler

      Episode 15:

      Spoiler

      2, 4, 6, Greaaat: D (#161)

      Episode 16:

      Spoiler

      A Trivial Pursuit: B (#79)

      Episode 17:

      Spoiler

      Summer Sun Setback: A (#20)

And there could be some other changes in the future including…

    1. Improving Make New Friends's to a B- or B.
    2. Downgrading Where the Apple Lies almost two letters.
    3. Improving Frenemies a little, maybe into the top-25.
    4. Maybe moving PPOV away from the bottom-15.
