You're asking for an all encompassing answer, which is something that you're not going to get. People have many reasons for enjoying the show (they can enjoy other things as well mind you as not everyone is thinking MLP 24/7). There are some common reasons, but people do enjoy it as just a show - The same reason why people enjoy Power Rangers (going on twenty years strong), the same reason why people like Dr. Who, the same reason why people enjoy the Walking Dead - there's something the show that appeals to their likes and tastes and draws them in. Some people could've easily been taken in by the fact that Lauren Faust was the creator of this show's latest generation, the reason being is that Faust had created a number of other works that the 20 or so people enjoyed when they were much younger - Powerpuff Girls, Foster's Home for Imaginary friends, I think she was a part of the Iron Giant, and learning that she was making more content was enough to draw attention to the show. Another reason why people may like it is because animated shows now-a-days are more accepted by a more mature audience - in the past, a lot of younger people grew up with simpsons and such, so cartoons were a viable source of entertainment and can still be - Even if it can be for a show as simple as MLP. Granted, these are only a couple reasons, and they by no means represent the majority of why people enjoy MLP. Like I said, everyone's answer will be different on why they enjoy the show - There is no universal answer on this. People just like what they like.

As someone who's more in the agnostic category (I honestly don't care if there's a god or not, and I find it a little weird for people to say that there is or isn't one out right when neither side can prove it) I was raised in a home that subscribed to a religion, yet the only thing that I had to deal with worse was a private grade school and an hour of church each week (didn't care for it, but doing it for someone you care for, an hour isn't gonna kill ya). I've had friends who became atheist from various religions, but I've also see the exact opposite happen - Atheists becoming religious. Now, I don't know the exact details for your situation - but as someone said earlier, keeping these feelings bottled up isn't going to end well. Start with a simple, innocent discussion talking with your folks on the subjects, let them know that you're questioning the religion (which is a natural thing to do as as teenager: Questioning the status quo). Be respectful to your folks and their beliefs when you talk to them about it, no need to add tension to an already serious situation that can be blown out of proportion. Like I said, I don't know the exact details for your situation, I'm just going by what I've seen my friends do when they unsubscribed/subscribed to a religion and had to talk to their folks about it.

I'm just going to say it, Season 1 wasn't that good
MangaKamen replied to Buck Testa's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
In all honesty, I don't like to rate the show by seasons, if there's a good episode, I'll just like it. That being said, there is a bit of a nostalgia curse floating around the first and second season, and its been shown by a few of the previous reviewers (or analysts as they like to call themselves) that they put the first two seasons up on a pedestal and either say that the show lost its luster in season 4 and 5 (even season 3 as well) or that the show got worse when Faust left, or other BS reasons. I'm reminded of the Gen Oners from pokemon who say that the first games of the series are the best games of the series, but it all depends on perspective on matters similar to that. If we didn't have a season one or an original game, we wouldn't be here right now discussing it, it set the ground work for show - Giving us characters, lore, and an entire world that has evolved over the past five years, not only thanks to the writing and creative team of the show, but also with the fans who love it as well. That being said, because it was the first, there are flaws. After all, nothing's perfect on the first go - Dialogue was a little clunky, pacing was a little off for some episodes, and some of the jokes were hit and miss to be honest. The show has gotten better after season one, not only with a writing sense, but also with a technical sense as well as we've seen with an evolution of the art style being used and how the characters all don't look like copy paste images with a different color scheme and mane style. Then again, this is all subjective. People are allowed to like the first season, people are allowed to like any season. The only thing that I can't stand when it comes to this is when I see people belittling others for liking/disliking a particular season. I'm not accusing anyone in this thread for that, but we've seen people in the community (or rather, those who were in the community) have a mindset like this. All in all, like what ya like... Nothing wrong with that at all. P.S. Most of my favorite episodes thus far are in the more recent seasons. -
Yup, and I'm working on a few special animations for the month of October... One of them including a character who's only said a single word yet has managed to instill fear in PS1 players for years. ... STARS.
