Adagio gazed up at the stars, filled with longing. She wasn't looking at the brightness, however, but for a shadow - the black shape of a flying creature.
As she gazed she saw the shape she was looking for. In her excitement she jumped and splashed about, thrashing herself about in the water. The shape came closer.
Adagio had learned the language of the creatures that made the shapes. They were called 'ponies' and the shape was an 'airship'. Her sisters merely thought the ponies were land-prey - inhabitants of another world. Adagio had come to dislike her sister's brutal vision of things, she didn't think the ponies were prey like the mindless fish - the fish didn't make things like the airships... but more importantly the fish couldn't talk and it was this that adagio really longed for. Adagio could think, but her body was made for brutality not communication.
A light shone on her from the airship as she continued to dance in the water. Eventually one of the ponies called out to her.
Adagio knew the pony's voice. He was called Starswirl. She had encountered this pony a long time ago, when he had fallen into the water from another big black shape, one that floated on the water. She would have devoured him but for the fact that instead of the howling or hissing noises of other land creatures who had fallen into her domain, he had 'talked' to her. She didn't understand what the noises were then, but she was instantly mesmerised. She defended the pony from her sisters and had taken him back to his world.
Since then Starswirl had taught Adagio to understand him and his world. Today he has promised to bring a new pony 'shape', a gem, for her and each of her sisters. He had told her that by using its magic she could 'talk' like him, so that she could share her longings and desires.
She and her sisters would leave the darkness of her world behind, they would bask in the sound of the new world, and no pony would deny her voice.
