Hello there, my crowd! Welcome to my Weekly Musings: Red Edition.
[I ❤ JAPAN] -- [I ❤ THE COLOR RED] -- [I ❤ CELESTIA]
Feel free to leave a song request. Your song will eventually be featured in a future Weekly Musings entry!
... I'm coming to hug you, my crowd!
So the biggest thing that is happening this week, besides some street construction near me, is some drama that is happening in my family. I'll save you all the personal details. I am working it out myself, I just needed to take a break from them for a while. In fact, I'm all ready feeling better.
In fact, there has been a fair share of drama on my end, but I hope it's all cooling down.
I wonder if I should talk about all the trailers that have been popping up.
There have been so many, and I haven't even written them all down. I know I saw the new Tiny Toons trailer. Looks promising, but I still want to know if Babs and Buster will still be related or not. Ultraman Z has an English dub, and it looks like the newest Ultraman (Blazar) is going to have one is well. I hope it's the same level of voice acting as before. Disney is going ahead with their race-swapped Little Mermaid movie. That's all I can remember for now.
Monday, I had the roughest day I could imagine, and my entire week has had random moments of just being bad in general. Good moments in there too, but plenty of bad. I'm hanging in their as best I can. Most of what happened was a fluke, but some of it was long-lasting. Still, I am doing my best to keep my head above water. I hope this new week will be better.
Geats 31: A Two-Faced Goddess!
This is the episode that really shows you just how dark Geats is willing to go. Innocent people are dropping left and right, and I mean that in both senses of the word. We also learn that the Goddess robs happiness from others to grant the happiest wish of whoever wins the Grand Prix, which is why some victims don't get to come back to life. While I empathize with Tycoon, I know that Geats never wished for the suffering of others, and I also think there must be a catch. Feelings are immaterial; there's no way there can be some cosmic limit to them. Lastly, we see Buffa is truly corrupt after all. After learning the truth, you'd think he'd want to go after the Goddess most of all, yet he is still narrowing his sights on Geats and all Kamen Riders.
King-Oh 07: Mixing a Royal Elixir!
Gotta admit, a black and gold scorpion looks pretty good partnering up with Yellow. Speaking of, we learned more about her backstory this episode! We learned more about the Shugods too; didn't expect one to having romantic feelings for the other. Still, it was cool to see Blue and Yellow's kingdoms work together for a common cause. Maybe they are getting closer after all? It's also really good to see some team bonding between Red, Blue, and Yellow. (If you know your Sentai tropes, then of course they would!) Over all, this episode went in directions I never expected, but it was still wholesome none the less, and that's what really matters.
[ 1 / 2 ] MMPR Once & Always: Nostalgia & Mourning.
It's hard for me to accurately judge this in a balanced way; it feels like most criticisms I have for this are either unfair or have a counterpoint. I'm sorry we couldn't see Austin or Amy Jo back in action, but the dubbing team really did their best to make it look like they were always there (pretty sure they grabbed audio from episodes of the original TV show). In the background, other Power Rangers from other seasons were teased, but there just wasn't a big enough budget to have a massive parade of Rangers. They did answer some questions about continuity, but didn't spend tons of time on it because they only had so much time. I wish part of the story had been dedicated to Jason David Frank/Tommy, but this story was filmed and most likely finished before the tragedy of his passing, so it makes sense that they only wanted to make one story dedicated to Thuy Trang/Trini. (At least both actors were given a dedications screen at the end.) I wish we could had gotten at least one other Ron Wasserman song besides “Go Go Power Rangers”, but at least we got that much. You can argue that the story was pretty mid, but considering this was more of a tribute to Thuy, you have to give it some leeway.
[ 2 / 2 ] If there was anything worth critiquing, it was the final blow. Considering how much it meant to Minh, it seems like the new Yellow Ranger should have been the one to have the honor. Also, her realizing what it really means to be a Ranger was done in a very deus-ex-machina kind of way, but I guess it's not the worst. The only thing I can do is try to celebrate the accomplishments of this special. David Yost/Billy not only makes a triumphant return, but gets to be the defacto leader for a while. Even though David and Walter Jones/Zack were reminiscing in-character, you could tell they were remembering their friend and costar Thuy. Most of all, I like that they repackaged a sappy, dorky song from the first season of Mighty Morphin into a heartfelt ending theme. To put it short, this special may be a reunion special, but it was never meant to be a glorious story about heroes nor was it a love letter to the long-time fans of the original show. It was meant to be a tribute piece to those we lost and those who deserved better. Maybe someday, we might see a different kind of reunion special that kicks butt. For now, this was fair. Not perfect, but fair.
That's all for now, my crowd.
Take care, and power up.
Just a short but funny one this time. Can you recognize all the song samples used here? And there have been TONS of songs over many decades! This could have gone on and on and on! This is "I made a song entirely from artists singing "yeah"" by There I Ruined It.
