So I'm thinking about getting a drawing tab but.....

Ok so, I'm thinking about getting a drawing tab, the only thing is, I'm not sure if I would like digital drawing or not b/c I've not really tried it before (aside from using paint or w/e) as well as the fact that I don't really have any money.  :o

Also, can anyone please tell me what you think is a good affordable tablet is for beginners? (something less than $100 preferably for now).  ^_^

One thing I could do to see if I would like it (at least it would give me an idea) is to just download a drawing app on my tablet, at least that would giving me an idea without having to spend tons of money first.

With that being said, are there any apps you all recommend?? If so that would be helpful! Thanks!  :D

Btw, hope this isn't in the wrong section, I wasn't sure where else to put it b/c there's tech stuff, but that seems to be more for general site questions/support.......  :o

While not for a tablet, I know that the wii had a drawing pad thingy and a game you buy to use it. I have one at my house, but never tried it since I dont draw.

Yeah, I've heard about that, and we have a wii, but you have to buy a Wiiu for that, which, I wouldn't mind having one, but I'm really wanting to get something for fanart, pics, etc.....

Good idea though! But yeah like I said, I'd like to find a drawing app to use for now and see how I like it. If I like it enough, then I can just may invest in something better later on.

You dont need a wiiu you I dont have one. I like your idea of the cheaper option first. Would not want to waste money. Its also good investment planning.

Actually a scanner too can be helpful.

You can make the sketches on paper, scan them into the computer and paint on them.

For some the pencil just feels more direct so they prefer using it.

True, and I've thought about doing that, but I really would like to try using a drawing tablet. Just to see how I like it. Just right now that's not really an option.

You mostly have to get used to the disassociation between the line and the hand.

You look at the display but use the tablet.

But it is mostly a matter of practice above all.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, I know someone said they got one and didn't really like it, but yeah I would still love to dry it.

I have one.

It's not too different.

The fundamentals are the same be it pencil or a digital tablet.

Digital has one huge advantage over paper.

(edited)

Honestly, you get used to drawing digitally if you put your mind to it. It's a little different at first, but you get used to it quickly (assuming you're drawing digitally on a regular basis).

Currently, I have the Bamboo CTL-460, which isn't that expensive, and does all I need, however, I think Bamboo discontinued the product (not sure). Software wise.

The software I use the most is MyPaint. Simple and effective and it works with both Windows and Linux. (http://mypaint.intilinux.com/)

I have used other software, such as Inkscape and Gimp, I tend to stick with MyPaint.

By the way, the profile picture was made with the tablet and MyPaint.

It really does, I honestly feel like you can do a lot more with digital stuff than you can with paper. The only thing is though I'd wanna get one where it has a screen that you can see as you're drawing, but the one I'm looking at, which is a cheap one, I don't believe is like that. I can't tell though.

I don't think you can see what you're doing, I think this one has to be plugged in as you're using it.

Well I wouldn't but ">" or "<" between the two.

But digital is more clean and convenient.

You can basically make a new layer over the sketch and just start coloring.

Instead of working about messing up the paper etc.

The touch screen display ones are horribly expensive. (Wacom Cintiq)

They worth it if you do it for serious business but for a beginner I would recommend a cheap one.

Start small first. You can move up later!

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I think that would be better, but like I said, I wanna go ahead and get a drawing app first. But yeah getting a cheaper one than going up would be better.

The touch screen ones are nice.

Yeah, I agree with you on that, plus, I like the idea of not having to worry about having everything in one place, as well as not having to keep up with a bunch of supplies and such.

Yes. You can have a better workflow.

Not to mention sharing is a lot simpler.

You don't need to mess with the scanner issues etc.

Also if you can put on a few colours people will notice it fast.

Ponies are supposed to be colorful.

Exactly! That's what I was thinking! I just think it would be really enjoyable, and possibly easier, feels like it would have a more natural feel/flow to it, which is always a plus!

And quite honestly, yeah they can get expensive, but so can drawing supplies. I mean when you balance out the costs of paper, pencils, erasers, etc, then it can get expensive. Especially if you want the good stuff, with that, everything's already in it, and you don't have to mess with buying a bunch of different stuff and having to keep up with it. Everything you need is (hopefully) just right there for you!
