Xcom, I just can't do it

How the hell do you beat this game? I got a good crew, 2 of which were top ranking. Then one mission I got these two, and the rest of the crew got killed, it just declined from there. Suddenly almost every mission I got killed. According to the end stats, out of 40 missions, lost 5. I managed to get everyone killed before the last council report. I just couldn't figure out how to kill the overseer ufo for the life of me. It took until the end of the game until I got the emp cannon but I didn't ever make it. I was on easy the entire way as well. Do I just suck at this game, or is it just too hard.

I used the firestorm, but I still had the same problem, Is there a way to reverse engineer the massive cargo ship? that would be awsome

Is your problem that you can't catch it, or you can't kill it?

I can't kill the thing, I used the missiles, avalanche missiles, and the laser cannon. It just wouldn't budge, even if I used all of the abilitys that I had (AIM, DODGE, and BOOST)

You basically need at least Plasma to kill it. Actually, for my I/I run I used a regular plane with plasma and boosts. Are you pplaying Vanilla or Long War?

I'm assuming vanilla, considering it only lasted three days until I died, but thanks for the tip

I'm assuming we're talking about Enemy Unknown or Enemy Within?

It's a game that can take some serious practice to play. I've never beaten the game myself because I always play Classic Ironman (as recommended by a friend because it makes the game feel more natural) and die way too often but having to restart the game wouldn't be a bad idea. You know how to do some things now, what to waste money on and what not to.

I never dealt much with the ships so I can't really give you advice on that but don't be afraid to restart your game if you get into a dead end. The game was practically made in a way that you need to do that at least once or twice.

Classic Ironman is ok as long as you don't have Progeny or Rebound installed. Those two make Classic Ironman almost as hard as vanilla Ironman Impossible.

Ah, then you don't have to worry about training pilots or anything like that... If you have Enemy Within installed, MECS ARE YOUR FRIEND. And if you don't then you want a squadsight sniper on every squad if possible, if only because they provide a long-reaching hand of death over the entire map.

Never really played with any DLC. I don't usually buy or download the stuff unless it's extra story or something.

Enemy Unknown, Havn't bought the dlc yet, but I don't understand what it changes other than the title. New aliens? But what do you guys think that the best country to start with, I almost always go with, We have ways, it seems that it gets things done. I also thought that the one that gives you 50% less on research and engineering.

Then Classic Impossible is the best way to play. Or, if you're wiling to go through with the time commitment, install the Long War mod and play on normal, it's an even better version of the game.

Enemy Within adds some new story, a few missions, MEC troopers, who are freaking cyborg soldiers who are basically made of concentrated awesome, new aliens, a new human antagonist faction, and a whole bunch of other minor things that I won't get into because you're probably not a statistics nerd. As for starting country, Asia is the best late-game country, while US is the best early game country.

Yes, most of the people I got to the top rank were squadsight snipers. They were able to deal a crapton of damage without being seen.

Mods aren't possible on 360 so that's out anyway.

But I have a hard enough time on Classic Ironman, I'd really rather not play Impossible which is, as it's name implies, impossible. At least Classic gives me a chance. lol

A friend of mine, the one who got me into XCOM with Enemy Unknown, says that Enemy Within is cool at first cuz it gives you a few more options but it's ultimately more unbalanced than EU. He prefers EU himself, obviously.

  • 4 weeks later...

FUCK YOU XCOM!!!

I finally managed to beat the game, and never lost a single mission and brang every alien I saw down to hell with my soldiers, I nearly killed 300 aliens in the game and only lost about 100, better than I ever did, and good luck getting me to play it again, I'm out, see you at Half-life 3.
