Anala sat on a tree stump in the field on the outskirts of Manehattan. She was waiting for a pony named Aero Wind. She had met him yesterday, and he had expressed interest in learning how to shoot a bow and arrow.

 

'Seeing as he's a Pegasus,' thought Anala, 'he won't need to learn how to stand on two legs.'

Aero glided into view a few minutes later. He saw Anala, and landed in front of her. 'Sorry I'm late! I got lost on the way here.'

 

'First things first, I better give you the payment for this session.' Aero reached into his saddlebags, and handed over five bits to Anala.

Anala turned her head in Aero's direction. "Ah, there you are, Aero!" She took the five Bits. "Erm, I hope you're not upset at me for all that tormenting I did to you while you were a Breezie..."

'Hey, we've both apologized to each other for that. I don't hold grudges against ponies who are sorry for what they've done. Just forget about it, it's behind us now.'

 

Aero took a look around, particularly looking at all the archery equipment. 'So, what's the first thing I have to learn?'

Anala smiled at Aero. "It was sort of funny when we look back at it..."

 

When Aero asked about what he had to learn, Anala replied, "Well, to hold a bow and arrow. Being an Earth Pony, I had to train myself to stand on my two hind legs. But you're a Pegasus, so you can be in mid-air and hold the bow and arrow."

'So, I get to be a midair archer? That sounds really fun!' Aero put his saddlebags down, picked up a bow, and then hovered a little above the ground. He tried to aim the bow, but then quickly realized he was missing one vital thing. 'Anala, could you please pass me an arrow?'

"I hope I won't have to deal with forgetfulness for this entire session," Anala said with a giggle.

 

She reached into a quiver, pulled out an arrow, and gave it to Aero. "You know, when Riley and I were kids, he didn't know how to fly, so he had to sit on my back to shoot."

'You taught Riley how to do archery as well? Actually, I see you two together all the time, so that makes sense.'

Aero took the arrow Anala handed to her and tried nocking it. However, he wasn't holding the bow correctly at the time, which caused him to fumble the bow and shoot the arrow into the ground in front of him immediately afterwards. 'Yikes! So, those arrows are going to be really painful if I accidentally shoot myself, aren't they?'

"Yup, I taught him," said Anala. "And at the moment, I'd say he ranks at about... hm... let's say... somewhere between average and fantastic."

 

Anala watched Aero shoot the ground.

 

"Yikes! So, those arrows are going to be really painful if I accidentally shoot myself, aren't they?"

 

"Yes. Very," said Anala deadpan. "Just to be clear, you haven't had any alcohol to drink in the few hours before you came here, have you?"

'No, I swear I'm not drunk!' Aero responded. 'It's just my hooves slipped or something. I'll be sure to hold onto the bow better from now on!'

 

Aero picked up the arrow he shot into the ground, then returned to hovering in the air. He held out the bow in front of him, then held the arrow so the back touches the string of the bow, but doesn't pull. 'Is this how you hold the bow to nock an arrow?'

"That's good to know," replied Anala. "Legally, I'm not supposed to teach intoxicated people."

 

Aero held the arrow in the bow, and asked for clarification on whether that's how you do it.

 

"Yup," said Anala. "You've got it right. Now that you've got it pulled back, you can fire."

After Anala confirmed that Aero was holding the bow correctly, he pulled back the arrow, aimed at the target, and fired the arrow. However, the arrow completely misses the target, flying past it at about a metre to the right of it.

 

'I did it! I shot an arrow! Although it's a little disappointing that I completely missed the target...'

Anala chuckled a little, and nudged Aero playfully. "Hey, it's fine. You only just started after all."

 

"I wasn't this awesome when I first started. I became good through practice. Like I practiced to stand on two legs."

 

She demonstrated by standing up on her hind legs. She took a bow and arrow and hit a bullseye.

'Whoa, that's really impressive!' Aero cheerfully said. 'It looks even harder for an earth pony to do it, since you don't have wings to help balance yourself. What you're doing really is amazing!'

 

Aero took another arrow and fired it at the target. This time he managed to hit the second zone from the outside of the target. 'I did it! I hit the target!'

"I know, right!" agreed Anala. "I'm so awesome, aren't I?" she gloated.

 

Aero pulled back an arrow and hit the target at last. Anala nodded, suitably impressed. "You're doing pretty well for a first-timer," she commented. "Keep going. I bet there's plenty more where that came from."

Aero continued firing arrows at the target, as Anala suggested. Most of them hit the outer area of the target, and some of them missed it completely. However, one of his arrows landed very close to the center, right next to the bullseye. 'Yes! Did you see that one! That was so close!'

Anala surveyed the target, admiring the evidence of the skills that Aero possessed. "Pretty good shooting there, Private," said Anala with a smirk.

 

"Tell you what," said Anala. "I have a little... hm... 'proposition' for you. If you can get at least... let's say... five bullseyes during this session, lunch is on me."

After heading the 'proposition', Aero smirked. 'You're on!'

 

As if the free lunch encouraged him to perform better, his very next arrow landed right on the bullseye. 'Yeah! I'm improving! Just four more to go!' He then fired another arrow, this one missing the target completely. 'Or maybe that was just a fluke...'

Anala was pretty impressed with the bullseye that Aero just fired.

 

She watched as his next arrow missed the target completely. When he suggested it was "just a fluke", she said, "Nah, I believe that you have genuine talent in there."

 

She shot an arrow and got a bullseye. "Also, the loser must buy lunch for the winner. Seeing as we both hit the fifth circle, that's five points each."

'The loser buys lunch? That's not fair! You've been doing archery for far longer than I have! You've hit nothing but bullseyes so far!'

 

Aero paused a moment to calm himself down. 'Earlier, you said you'd buy lunch if I got five bullseyes. How about I'll buy lunch if I don't get five bulleyes?'

Anala put a hoof to her chin. "Hmm... you're right. That isn't very fair. Seeing as I'm sooo awesome at archery..." she gloated in front of Aero.

 

"So yeah, unless you get five bullseyes, you're buying," she said.

 

"You know, it's not too late to back out..." she taunted playfully.

'I'm already a fifth of the way there. I'm not going to backing out now!' He fired another arrow, this one hitting right next to the bullseye. 'Oh, so close!'

 

Aero continued firing arrows at the target for a while, not speaking so he can focus on aiming  his arrows.

Anala looked at the arrow that had landed in the circle directly around the bullseye. "I said you have to get bullseyes. Not near bullseyes," she reminded him teasingly.

 

She watched as Aero continued to shoot. "Hmm... after this, I think I'll have an apple pizza, please!" she teased. "Oh, and with a side of onion rings."

'Yeah, I know. I still need another four,' Aero responded. 'I'll need to concentrate if I'm going to get the next four.' He then returned to silence, continuing to fire arrows at the target. Shortly after, he scored his second bullseye. When he did, he thrust his hoof into the air and shouted 'Yes!'

Anala watched Aero as he continued to fire the arrows at the target. A few arrows later, he'd scored his second bullseye. "Well done," said Anala, nodding in admiration.

 

"So... what restaurant do you have in mind?" she asked. "If you win, you choose where to eat. If you lose, I choose where to eat," she explained. "Don't worry, I won't choose that outrageously expensive fancy upper-crust restaurant that all the snobs eat at," she added with a giggle.
