Hearing Herald's cries, a nurse rushed into the room and stopped next to Herald's bed.

 

"Yes, of course, sir. What seems to be the problem?" asked the mare as she looked down at Herald. "Oh, and just to let you know, the couple that brought you here left this for you," she added, placing a basket on the bed. The basket contained food and a hoof-written note:

Words cannot describe how deeply sorry I am for what just happened. I think you should know that I am prone to outbursts of anger; it is a problem I have faced since I was a filly. I understand if you don't want to associate with me again, but if you do, my companion Riley and I can be found in the hotel in Ponyville.

"I would like some water, if you could. Also, if you didn't mind, I would really like to know where I can earn some money. I believe I will be here a while, as I have nowhere else to go." Herald thought a bit more. "And some paper would be nice, if that isn't too much of a bother. Thank you."

 

Herald looked over the note several times more, wondering if that was supposed to be normal or if, like Anala said, it was just in a burst. He felt like he himself was a bit overbearing, not Anala.

 

"Obviously I have some adjusting to do. I think I will go and see them later. Nopony should be put under the strain of thinking I wouldn't associate with them. Rejection is harsh." Herald had made up his mind.

The nurse placed a jug of water and a cup on the bedside table next to him. She then placed down a small notepad, along with a pen and pencil.

 

"Sugarcube Corner is currently looking to hire some more cleaners," said the nurse. "The salary is five Bits an hour. And just to let you know, an employee named Pinkie Pie will likely be... hm... excited to see you."

"Pinkie Pie? Whoever that is, why would she be excited to see me? I'm not known around here, not yet at least. Anyway, thank you. I'll look into it. Five bits an hour? Works for me." Herald looked at the pad, then used magic to pick it and a pen up and began writing.

 

"One more thing, nurse. When will I be discharged?" Herald spoke quietly, deep in thought. "I have something I need to do today."

As the nurse began to walk away, she stopped and turned round to look at Herald. "You will be discharged in roughly an hour, sir. Fortunately, the injury you sustained is not that serious compared to what some patients go through. The ponies who brought you here claimed that they found you like this. Don't hesitate to press that button if there is anything else you need; our staff will be alerted."

 

She smiled sweetly at Herald before leaving.

"Thank you, ma'am." Herald said as the nurse walked out. "I guess it is safe to assume Riley and Anala brought me here."

 

Herald spaced out for a while, waiting to be discharged. "Once I get out, I'm going to Sugarcube Corner to apply for a job." Herald began eating, realizing for the first time in a while how long it had been since he had eaten a proper meal.

Arriving at his house, Mirror Image sets the watch on a small stand. He then casts a spell on it time make it look tarnished and old. "Sigh, thus will have to wait, that pony says attention to cutie marks from what he said, good thing u kept the illusion up, that was useful to know and know I really must prepared for work " Using his magic, he changes his hair color yo a subtle blue, and tints his coat darker.

Herald, being discharged from the hospital, began his trip to Sugarcube Corner, passing shops and houses very different from what he was used to. Keeping a watchful eye for trouble, Herald kept his distance from everypony. Arriving at the door, Herald walked into the shop, saying out loud: "Hello? I'm here for a job, is it still available?"

 

Herald went to the counter, smelling something sweet, and again feeling hunger despite the meal an hour earlier.

Mr. Cake walked in and greeted Herald at the counter. He slid a clipboard, holding a job application sheet, onto the counter. "Yes, of course, sir. Just fill out this form, and then..."

 

Pinkie Pie poked her head from behind the door. When she saw Herald, a wide, happy grin spread across her face.

 

She leapt out and pounced onto Herald. "Hiya, mister! I've never seen you before and I know everypony in Ponyville so that must mean you're new and I just love making new friends! YIPPEE!! What's your name?! Where are you from?!"

Herald, completely shocked by Pinkie Pie's sudden outburst, said, "Um, my name is Herald. I'm from, well never mind. Who are you?"

 

Then, remembering the clipboard, tried getting up, but Pinkie wouldn't allow it until satisfied. Noticing, Herald stated in a well mannered tone, "Um, sorry, but I need to get that clipboard. I would like to work here."

Pinkie Pie blinked. She looked back at the clipboard. "Ooohhh... right!" she said, releasing Herald. "You really need that clipboard, huh? Because otherwise you won't be able to fill out the application and no application means no job here at Sugarcube Corne and that would be awful because this is a GR-EAT place to work at and..."

 

She continued to ramble on.

"Yes, indeed." Herald got up and began filling out the paperwork.

 

Directing his voice to Mr. Cake, Herald questioned, "Is she always like this? Or is this just because I am new?" Herald continued filling out the paperwork, then handed it to Mr. Cake.

 

Looking back at Pinkie Pie, Herald realized he might have answered his own question.

Mrs. Cake showed up next to her husband. "Yes, when it comes to new ponies, she does become quite... excitable," she explained.

 

"We've learnt to just roll with it," added Mr. Cake with a shrug.

 

Mrs. Cake surveyed the clipboard. "You'll start tomorrow," she told Herald. "Have a nice day, sir!"
