Oc and Canon Relations

I'd say that would be fine; most consider relations to canon characters sort of Mary-Sue/Gary-Stuish, especially because they're one of the core elements of what makes up a series. There's also the fact that ANYBODY can ship them, and people sometimes...flip out when their favorite character is shipped with a random OC. I personally keep OC/canon relations in a pseudo-canon/fanon that I've developed, that has no direct connection to the main medium, and don't bother really considering it my main headcanon that I use for online RPing and the like.

Considering the case of being Fleur's cousin...that might fly better than being married to Rainbow Dash, for example. This is taking into account the fact that she's a minor/background character, but there MIGHT be one or two people against it. Not a whole flock.

Coming from a Sonic forum where most people had OCs that were direct clones of the main characters, or could obtain the same POWER as said characters, you learn that it's...really a terrible habit to get into. The same applies to having power that could trump the most powerful character in the series, no matter what they throw at you.

...the latter case is a bit off-topic, but I hope I've given you some insight.

Two of my OCs are related to canon characters, and neither of them are Mary Sue or Gary Stu.

Corn Maize is a distant cousin of Applejack's. The He is claustrophobic, sarcastic, and has lack of trust.

Blaze Fire is Spitfire's sister. She has a wing deformity making her a slow flier and has an attitude problem and is cocky.

As long as you make them realistic, it should be fine.

The problem I see with it is that the mane 6 now have millions of cousins/brothers/sisters/boyfriends/etc.  lol

Applejack already has a lot of canon family. That doesn't stop me from making a character related to her. Also, she also possibly has the Pie family making my OC related to the Pie family as well. I'm sure there is a headcanon where all ponies of a certain species are related somewhere, so according to that, my ponysona is related to Rarity and Twilight, and Blaze is related to Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy.

Then one day, they will confirm the Mane Six are all related making the family even bigger.

Thanks for all of your input. It's really helped because I've seen alot of people hate on OCs that have canon relations   .

Although I have seen an uprise on Rainbow Dashs' long lost sister coming out of nowhere  . Also my OC Cinnamon wont be having any direct contact with the Main 6.

When we say main characters, do we mean mane 6? Not that it totally matters, but I was just wondering on that. My OCs aren't related to any main character, but Bright Bastion (my main OC i guess you could say) got his cutie mark because of Shining Armor. In his backstory, Shining Armor sits him down and asks him what he wants to do with his life (It's a bit detailed, but basically Bastion's Family is mentoring Shining Armor) and Bastion tells him his life story and He gets his Cutie Mark (A shield) when he makes the decision that all he wanted to do was protect the people he cared for. But that's as much contact with the main cast that Bastion gets. At least at this point.

Cheria (right) is a small town girl who was afflicted with a terrible sickness when she was very young. Meeting Sophie changed that however. She recovered almost instantly from her illness due to Sophie's magic and gained an undeniable talent with her own, and what does she do with this magic? She acts as a healer for her small town and helps the militia keep the hostile border safe. Seven years later, she's started a nation-wide relief organization after her adventure with Sophie and Friends, a great connection to the element of generosity.

Alright, I'll be that guy.

I have a similar opinion on this as I do for Alicorn OCs. If it's for an isolated fan-fiction or something I could care less, but for "main" OCs, the ones that are essentially your face to the fandom, it's a quick way to "other" your OC and is usually seen as a lazy attempt to make them more interesting than they otherwise would have been.

It's also a matter of degrees; a distant cousin of the Apple family? That's very low-impact, plausible and can be seen as a small but interesting aspect of a character's background. Rainbow Dash's long lost brother? That's just screaming "I can't think of something to make this OC interesting, so I'll shoe-horn in a relation to a main character."
