I'm almost 100% certain Spike is a boy. If not, than I may have severe perception issues.

Well, just because there aren't enough people here saying the same thing, Spike is a bro. But the fact that his voice actor is actually a voice actress makes things a little more complicated.

There are actually a lot of male characters played by females, as well as female characters played by males....just look at the anime industry

Spike is obviously a male, some art you saw might be the gender bender Spike, Barbara or Spine, like this pic:

In G3, Spike was made out to be more of a very guyish character. In G4 he seems to be meterosexual

Spike is male. He's referred to by both the characters and the creative team in the masculine, and many of his traits underscore his being the "little brother" character.
