Ikr, I can imagine Luna being a badass when it comes to a fight. 

Actually, Luna does the night watch with the royal guard(her batponies) in the comics. You could say it's her job to fight all the things that go bump in the night, like manticores, owlbears, and such.

What if everyone relates to Luna because, instictually, knowing her duties makes her feel more motherly. We are born loving our mothers and always internally will no matter how horrible they become. It's an irremovable bond that sticks with us from birth and can last even the worst of events.  We may come to outright hate our mothers (given the situation goes that badly) but deep down inside we will love them no matter how much they hurt us. It's DNA deep and impossible to change. Another reason why Luna is motherly. She's done quite the terrible thing and yet she still has those loyal to her and willing to allow her to make amends.
