111111 111 November 11, 2014 Share November 11, 2014 Hi. I'm quite short on time so here is the thing. I'm writting a story but I don't how long it's need to be if I want to call it a book. What do you think is a good lenght for a book? And is it just the lenght that tells you if it's a short story or a book/novel? Thanks for the help and if you're swedish talking, follow me on twitter to find out more about this story. Jeric 46,876 November 11, 2014 Share November 11, 2014 @Sonicrainboom97, I went ahead and moved your topic to our Octavia's Hall Resource Center. While you do not mention if the novel is Pony or not, writing principles remain the same. To me, length should be dictated by the story itself. For example, I am writing in NaNoWriMo right now and I have a sneaking suspicion that my story will be finished before I cross the goal of 50,000 words. That is fine since you should never add unneeded content to a story. In general 60 K = a novel, but there is some disagreement on this. Check out this blog for more information, and maybe some of our writers here can give you their take.
Child Of Darkness 285 November 11, 2014 Share November 11, 2014 (edited) @@Sonicrainboom97, A general range to start of in for an adult novel would be between the 80,000 to 90,000 word bracket. Their is about a 10,000 to 20,000 word leeway in both directions. Over 110,000 is too long and under 70,000 words is too short. You should give this blog a good read. It gives good information about how long different genera of books should be. http://www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/guide-to-literary-agents/word-count-for-novels-and-childrens-books-the-definitive-post Edited November 11, 2014 by Child of Darkness
