Espurr 449 January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 So for all the military people out there, how did you end up doing what you were doing in the military? What are the benefits through the different types of military like air force, army, navy or marines/coast guard? Which type of military is better with helping college graduates? I hear the military can help you with college payment. Does anybody know how that works? Thanks for all your help! I don't care what pony you like because I like everypony! Mightymags 1,053 January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 So I'll reply since no one else has, but I have to warn you that I'm not 100% sure on all this stuff because I'm not in the military. I have known a lot of people that are in the military though. There are many different ways that you can go about doing the military and combining it with school. One option is just enlisting, going in at the lowest rank and doing whatever they need in each particular branch. With that option I'm not sure how schooling works but I think there's a way that they'll help you through college while you're enlisted. Another option is ROTC, or Reserve Officers Training Corps. If you can get accepted to one of those programs you get a scholarship that will pay for I think most of school, definitely tuition. In ROTC you go to a regular college and basically do military stuff and get training for the four years you're there, then when you graduate you go into the military as an Officer, which is a good deal because they get paid more and you'll have a college degree you can use when/if you leave the military. Another option is attending a service academy. They pay for all your schooling, you're in a very military environment and everyone there is going into the military with you. As with ROTC you graduated from these as an Officer. They are very selective though and not easy to get into. But if I were you I would talk to recruiters in each branch about the different option to see which one appeals to you.
Gouunta 59 January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 Hi, i have been in the army for a few years now. your choice of branch is pretty much whatever you find to be more interesting, but i can tell you without a shadow of a doubt the air force tends to help their service members more in my experience, I cant speak for any other branch but i do know that if you join the army they will pay for your schooling, and if you already have a 4 year degree you come in as an E-4 (Specialist). makes decent money but i don't know it off the top of my head anymore. if you havent paid off your college you can take an option to have your collage assistance pay the remainder of your student loans. if i have to be honest though i wish i would have joined the navy or air force. if you have any more specific questions you are more then welcome to pm me

Darrala 269 January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 (edited) How did you end up doing what you were doing in the military? - I was a conscript in Finnish Defense Forces, in Kainuu Artillery Regiment. After basic training i was given the choice between infantry in the mortar company and an artilleryman in 1. Tuliasemapatteri. I ended up in 1. Tuliasemapatteri as an artilleryman. What are the benefits through the different types of military like air force, army, navy or marines/coast guard? - I don't know really. Pretty much the only tangible benefits i got from doing my military service was getting in better shape physically and acceptance from the older generations. Which type of military is better with helping college graduates? I hear the military can help you with college payment. Does anybody know how that works? Thanks for all your help! - Since i served in Finnish Defense Forces and i'm assuming you're from the US i can't really offer any advice on that, sorry. As far as my country goes i don't think serving in the military gives you any advantage when it comes to education, unless you were trained into a leader. I can't really explain how it works in english, sorry Edited January 13, 2015 by ThatFinnMetalhead iRacing like a boss since 2015
sweetolebob18 728 January 13, 2015 Share January 13, 2015 My dad was a WWII vet. They tried to match your military specialty to what you did as a civilian (If they need, say, truck drivers, it is less training to use somebody who did it as a civilian, for example). One of the guys in his squad was bitching about this & the DI told him "Son, there's a war on. Mostly, the army needs people who are willing to kill people. You would be AMAZED how few folks are willing to admit that is what they did for a living as civilians." From when I was that age (1970s), I remember that if you don't make it through basic on 1st try (you don't qualify on the rifle range & have to repeat or whatever), they reassign you to whatever they need. Plus, whatever your 1st posting is, they will shift you where they need you to go. Basically, be SURE to get whatever they promise in writing.
