Probably because Dragon is perceived as big and strong and powerful and can beat literally anything.

Must I point out in generation I they couldn't get STAB because there was only one Dragon-type attack and it dealt fixed damage?

But Dragon types resist some of the most common types of moves (i.e. Fire, Electric, Water, and Grass), and the only things super effective against Dragon Types were Ice and Dragon; both of which usually don't last too long without fainting or being crippled due to Ice types being weak defensively in general, and Dragon types being super effective against itself.

The only truly overpowered dragons I can think of are legendaries...

Also, does this really look like it could hurt anyone?

Actually, Goodras are best Pokemon pretty deadly in battle; I have one and it does well. Plus, it has really high special defense so it can last a while against those kinds of Pokemon. The only competitive problem with Goodra is a lack of a reliable recovery, and a good item for it, Assault Vest, doesn't allow for Leftovers.

I have a Goodra too, and just about everybody hates her for how powerful she is :P

I would be fine with fairy if they hadn't just said "You're a fairy, and you're a fairy! Scary looking dog? Make it a fairy! Oooh and while we're at it, let's make a bunch of moves fairy! What's fairy gonna be good against? Dragon! Cause that makes total sense amirite?"

Well aside from the obvious fact that Fairies were made to neutralize Dragons and balance the game, its actually not much of a stretch to see why they pwn Dragons.

Fairies as portrayed in the game and by their moves, appear to be playful, cute and generally good-nature pure creatures, which contrasts to the often violent, destructive and threatening Dragons. In classical and general mythology its almost always a righteous and holy person that slays the dragons, the destructive often evil antagonist. Fairy types align very closely to this type of trait. Of course its not to say that all Fairies are pure hearted or that all Dragons are bad. These are just traits that tend to be associated with those type of virtues. Fairy types in that context defeat Dragon types by virtue of their pure nature and ability to pacify and disarm the often bigger foes.

Consistency wise it also makes sense when you look at the the other 2 types Fairies are effective against - Dark and Fighting. Dark types are described as mischievous, sneaky and often cheat to gain an advantage - again traits associated with evil. Fighting types are associated with violence and brute force. Both are again pacified by the Fairy type good nature and calming abilities.

It doesn't make a lot of sense at first, or at all for some, but that's the best answer I can give.
