Hommit and the rest of the advisers were stunned at what they saw "well, they moved fast...um alright then me and Duke will visit the housing situation, Jept and Calria go check out the ruins then I want Claria to find out where Cidionian soilders are living and see what we can figure out, Klux, visit the shrines and see what you can find"

The temporary houses had 4 rooms. A main dining room, a kitchen, a toilet and a small bedroom. All of them had rudimentary furniture and would allow up to 4 ponies to live there. EAch 'house' was given coal, to heat the oven, fresh water and food. The housing in the finished buildings however was of a good standard. The built blocks were meant to accomodat middle-class citizens. EAch apartament had a area of about 85ms and had 6 rooms. akitchen, a diner, 2 bedrooms, a toilet and a storage room. They were well furnished and had access to electrical lights that were powered by a series of 20 batteries in the blocks cellar. All apartaments also had heating from a boiler, also located in the cellar. The furniture was well-made and was available im more models, to respect its owners desire.

 

The ruins were not touched by the demolition team but were being excavated by Ponssias own expedition. As it was in the territory conceeded by the treaty, the goverment decided to excavate carefully and see what artifacts might be found for the Ponssian museums. Soldiers were stationed around the ruin to ensure security of the excavation.

 

A total of 2 minor shrines have been demolished by mistake due to the explosives used in the clearing of the city. However the shrines that were left untouched were now going through renovation. The walls were going to be re-painted and the altars cleaned. Although Ponssia had plans to convert the populace (they will build churches) they knew they had to repect the local culture.

 

Soldiers were mostly living in small tents scattered aroung the city. The main camp wasz by the temporary housing and was meant to act as a police force against robbers or criminals.

Hommit thought for a moment think about what he observed, it seems like everything has been taken care of..but still no sign of the missing servants" he turned to the duke "Do you have any idea why servant would be taken from the nobility and their handlers? this is main cause of unrest here, since the upper class uses servants for daily life and the middle class often are the handlers for the servants renting them out to the upper class to bring in more money, taking the servants away seems odd"

"Every pony has been given a separate home  to do as they wish for the duration of the reconstruction. I must say that i dont see what anybody would do with servants in these small Temporary homes. I mean they are free to do as they like, we just made sure every ponu has his or her own place to sleep until  the buildings are done."

"Well, I know the nobility dont need them, but you see they live with their handlers, handlers take care of servants. You see, servants cant really function on their own and they rely on their handler for support. Our goal here is we need to find where the servants are and reunite them with their handlers"

"Well... usual protocol would be to have a census of each citizen we reallocated. Soldier!"

A soldier turns around looking at the duke,

"Duke of Uxbridge, am here on his majesties orders" he takes our a seal, "PLease, take us to the cenus"

"Yes sir, follow me."

The soldiers takes them to a big tent, heavily guarded. Inside, officers were doing paperwork and dicussing about the current situation. A large table layed in the middle of the room, on it 7 thick books.

"Here it is." he opens a book, "Every citizen's name and allocation position, in alphabetical order. We like to keep things... organised."

"Alright, lets see" he opens a book and starts looking through it "I think I have an idea, I see here that it lists if these ponies are unicorns or pegasus, any unicorn listed here is going to be a servant, if we put out the world for all the handlers to come out at a designated area outside of the city, we will bring the unicorn servants out there and they should find their way to their handlers"

The oficers, of whom some were drinking, sleeping or talking just brst up. Yeas, sir!"

 

Soon, each 20 houses had a officer spreading the word. Unicorns were asked to make two columns, male and female and were asked to wait. It was made extremly clear that they were not forced to do so if they didnt want to."

Sure enough the unicorns all did exactly as they were told, each one looking timid and nervous, but as the pegasi handlers came out and gathered in the meet up place each ones faces lit up as they saw eachother, handlers called for the servants and they ran towards them, getting greeted by a big hug from their handler

 

Hommit smiled "Well, thats one thing taken care of, and now you have extra rooms, we could probably pack soldiers in them as they dont mind cramped quarters so they dont have to sleep outside in the desert in simple tents"

"Nonsense, they are trained to live in camps. Strengthens their immunitary system. W can use the extra housing for the immigrants tha shouold be arriving soon though."

 

The Duke was pretty proud with the speed the problem was resolved.

At the main station of command for the ponisonian troops, Claria approaches a random soldier "I am Commander Claria, Leader of all military forces of Cidonia and Military Adviser, I would like to speak with your commander"

 

Jept approached another ruin site a bit more isolated from the other ones, but still guarded with soldiers "Hello, I am Jebt the archaeology adviser, I would like to observe this operation, this is a very special site as this is where our great and glorious queen earned her cutie mark"

 

Klux approached one the shrines being renovated "I am High Preist Klux, please explain what is going on at this most sacred site?"

A seargent stepped forward,

"Yes, how may I be of assisstance?"

 

The cheif explorer meets him,

"This is more than just a usual site, we found ruins that date back more than 2000 years. It seems there were ponies here long time beofre you, their writing doesnt look like anythjing around here." As he said this, a stone earth pony statue was craned out of the ground. It was gently lowered and archeologists gently started cleaning it using fine brushes.

 

A worker reports,

"The shrines were in terrible condition, paints peeling off and walls crumbling. We are taking the utmost care to restore this place to its original condition."

Claria looked at him "Ive been hearing reports that some of your soldiers have been getting into fights with some of mine, Id like to hear your side of the story"

 

Jept nodded "Yes, these ruins are from a civilization that existed before us, a mostly bare-back nation, however  a great war happened between them and a powerful invading force and the civilization fell, our glorious queen was the one that discovered these particular ruins here"

 

Klux "I heard that some shrines out in the country were being dismantled paticularly the ones the bare-backs worship, the river god"

"We had reports of many insults claiming that we were nt supposed to be soldiers and that we were born to serve. When some of our soldiers were sharing supplies to farmers in the area, they got assaulted and we were told, ' those ponies deserve to live by themselves'. We see many racial remarks that will affect new recruits and will usually lead into clashes." the seargent explained,

 

 

"You do not understand now do you?" the explorer asked, "these artifacts are ancient, they dont need to stay in the ground, they need to be shown to the world!"

 

The worker looked through he plans,

"Nope... no report of dismantling... although we saw a group of pegasi sneaking at night in there... we heard noises... but we dont have any dismantling on schedule."

"Not surprising" Claria said "This is a culture shock to them, they are not used to seeing bare-backs in any sort position of authority other than being in charge of a farm. And seeing a unicorn outside of the role of servant is unheard of to them. I will speak to my soldiers about this, I suggest you do the same, tell them to ignore such remarks."

 

"well, we normally just restore the ruins and study the ancient culture actually removing them from their place with out putting them back fully restored seems like your removing history" Jept replied

 

Klux contemplated this "hmmm, this is most troubling, the bare-backs are very defensive of their god, the river god is the one they pray to in hopes of a bountiful harvest and to keep the river flooding predictable"

"They are trained to ignore, yet recruits dont take being hit by stones nicely."

 

"Well, y removing them and sending them to places where can be studied more, we could get their exact age. This upper structure is just a small room, we believe this is actually a giant temple complex... that may stretch for miles. They must  be explored."

 

A digger approached,

"Sir we are ready to open the stone gate!."

"Very well"

A small sizzle is heard then a tiny explosion.

"The lock is open sir!"

The explorer turns to the advisor.

"I bet you didnt have any of these." he tosses a bag of gunpowder, "you are about to witness what is inside these walls... something that had been locked for 2000 years. Now we may have use of the local knowladge of this ancient civilization... if youre willing to share."

 

"Well... we had nothing to do with the shrines, sir."

"Stones you say?" This caught her attention

 

Jept started to follow them "well what would you like to know?"

 

Klux sighed "well thank you for your time" he headed out of the city and walked out into the farmland near the river where there was still a ponissan presence, he walked along the river bank and ran into a broken river god shrine "hmm.."

"Yes when we were trying to ignore them, they started throwing stones... thats when the recruits snapped and the fights started."\

 

"Anything you might know that might tell us what we can expect down there." he lit a electric light and went through the hole, followed by two soldiers. "Are you coming?"

"interesting...thank you for the report.." Claria turned and started to leave "One more think, my friend, the High Priest got reports that shrines to the bare-back river god have been destroyed out in the country side and around farmland, would you happen to know anything about that?"

 

Jept nodded "uh yeah" he starts  to follow them "Most ruins weve explored are known to have traps but that is rare, you tend to only find traps in tombs"

"Our activity does not extend to the countryside. As far as i know my men and i... and the workers are only authorised to act inside the city. We only go in the countryside to distribute supplies."

Claria sighed "thank you for info" and left

 

Jept spoke up "actually we have most of the language translated" he looked around "man i wish the great queen was here, these are the oldest ruins weve found, but um oh, another thing you should probably know, most sites are um, haunted, you see the great war that ended this civilization was a slaughter from what we can tell, so ancient sites normally teem with spirits, and even the desert is self is unsafe to traverse at night in certain areas" he continued following them, this must be some form of super structure, the ancients were known for building temples and palaces inside mountains"

"Spirit... bah..." the light started to flicker, he turned to a soldier. "Battery!"

the soldier passed him a small metal casing

"damn this new electricity thing...  might be bright... but they finish fast... this place is carved into solid stone..." he touches the wall, "Dug right into the bedrock... must be going miles down. It must've taken them years to dig just one meter." the explorer said with awe.

"I admit, we have no idea just how old the ancient civilization was before it was wiped out, but we have found a few sites like this,  large structures built right into the mountains" 

 

Meanwhile over at the duke and Hommit, Claria approached them "Well,  my report has concluded that unsurprisingly Cidonian soldiers are xenophobic and have been picking fights, I will will be discussing this with them, I inquired with them about the destroyed shrines, and they know nothing, and seeing how the old man isnt here, he hasnt found anything either, any word from Jept?"

 

Hommit shook his head "nope, hes probably still at the ruin site"

"NOt only this... i mean the dig... cutting through such dense rock would be impossible... but it was done. No..no... i gotta contact the gov... we must go deeper into this... a entire mapping of the temple... we will need help with the language... this..this is just extrordinary!" he turned to Jept, "This might change the way we see the world."

"Se-seriously? well um our current theory is that they used unicorns that knew powerful spells to burrow through, but we are unsure when unicorns arrived if it was before, during, or after the great war. But if you need help with the language just find another archaeologist or a scholar, as I said, the language has mostly been decoded"
