that comment angered the young pegasus "Hey shove off uni, the only reason Im even listening to you is because the honorable Claria said you were an experience soldier, but just because you dont need a handler doesnt mean you get to walk around masquerading as some top dog" his wings were flared up and he was expecting an attack, he was very upset

 

the mare who at this point was clearly the leader of the squad just sighed and rolled her eyes, she was just doing her best not to get on the unicorns bad side, the other pegasi watch, expecting a fight

The duke suddey moved his back hoof making the pegasifall on his back and drew his sword, holding it to his throught. He then put it back in its holder. Two guards, a unicorn and a earth pony got him off the ground and held him.

"Speaking up against a commader is a offense. Let it be a lesson for you all."

A third guard took of the pegasi's uniform and another came over with a whip.

"Whip him until he faints or begs for mercy, whichever comes last."

The guard started whipping

"The backbone. Of an army... Discipline," he was talking over the pain screams,

"You will learn to hate your commanders and then learn to fear them. When im done, your going to fear me more than a rifle pointed at your head. Now, thanks your comrade here there will be no sleep tonoght. You are going to dig and make me 5 6m tall pyramids of sand and 5 6m deep holes. With your hoofs. The penalty of falling on sleep on post is usually death, consider yourself on post ehile you dig! Now, did i say stop cleaning. I want these rifles shining brighter than the Sun. NOW!"

The pegasus  tired to hold in his screams, and didnt beg for mercy, as signs of weakness were looked down upon

 

the night shortly came and the other members of the squad started digging their holes, they werent exhausted or annoyed, more of confused at this radical new style of training, as they dug they chatted a little bit "man i think he got off easy" one said, another pony chuckled "yeah, my dads a commander and he said if anypony in his squad talked back to a commander theyd be thrown in a manticore den" the first pony laughed "no im talking about the uni, Rex is top of his class when it comes to hoof to hoof combat" the mare who was in charged chuckled "Um no, thatd be me" the other ponies laughed a bit and then one spoke "Well your just a try hard" the mare chuckled "its not my fault Im just talented, besides, i have ambitions, once this week ends, Im going to apply for lieutenant as soon as I can, ill become a commander and maybe Ill challange Claria, she will be old by the time im her age and ill be the adviser of the military!" they were all talking while digging, one of the ponies yelled to Rex who was still being whipped "Hey REX! how ya holding up!"  Rex grunted "Still...Hanging...On..."

 

in the distance an orange glow of a fire raged in the distance, a camp fire from another squad doing the same test

 

and over to the west, blue pony shaped spirits shuffled around the distance, about 6 of them in total in the distance

The dule heard the comment of the whipped, he made a sign to a guard and he threw cold water over his back. His back was now bleeding, he told the pegasi and then told the whipper,

"Ok, you had your fun, hit him for real now."

He stopped whipping and came back with abouther whip. This one had Nine 'tails' and small metal balls on its end. These would carbe into the flesh.

He then turned to the group.

"Silence! no speaking without permission! When you finish, tear the down and fill the holes."

He then saw the blue things in the distance.

"Hans! Becker! Get on your horses, and go see what those things are. Keep your distance though."

 

The guards saluted

"Yes, Sir!"

And left.

Rex winced in pain, breathing slowly, still not giving in

 

the rest finished their holes and pyramids and filled them in, now currently just confused as to what they were going to do next, since initiative seemed to be frowned upon, the mare spoke "Commander, permission to start a campfire"

 

as the horses approached the spirits, they became aware of their presence, one creepily moaned and the spirits quickly began moving twoards the horses and their riders, hissing, however their movement was strange as their legs stopped moveing and just began floating towards them

"There is already a campfire."

The guards were staying by a fire, it was invisible for them as it was behind a tent.

"There."

 

"What are those Hans?"

"I dont know but we should tell the commander"

He said as he shot his rifle. The bullet went through and the two galloped back to the saftiness of camp.

"Sir, we have no idea what those things are... Bullet went right through."

The mare a little dissatisfied at not being able to do something useful turned back to her group and shrugged

 

Rex passed out from the pain, some of the group snickered a bit, from this obvious show of weakness

 

when the horsemen returned the mare spoke again "Commander, permission to explain"

The duke ordered something and 10 guards rushed and formed a line near the spirits, just out of there range (on the safeland). They held their bayonets firmly towards them, although they knew they would do much. Every instinct told them to stay away but orders were orders.

 

"Bury him to the neck." He told the guards holding Rex.

 

"Permission granted. What are they?"

"Spirits of the dead, long ago in the great war that founded kingdom, it was a well documented massacre by the foreign invaders, large scale battles that left thousands dead, story goes that the fighting was so brutal and bloody that there was no more room in the afterlife to go so they just wander the desert, no pony really knows why but thats how it goes, dieing in an unblessed area and your spirit is trapped there forever, combat against once is well documented as entirely pointless as your weapons will not affect them, but there weapons still work and will target and kill any pony they see" she replied

"Spirits of the dead. If theyre there that means theres still some connection to their conciosness. And if they were warriors, that means they should have a bit of honor left. And trust me, a few thousands aint enough to fill the wonderworld, as that would mean we filled it a long time ago."

 

He got on his horse and trotted towards the blue pale spirits. Out of reflex, he took of his hat in a polite salute but then realized what he was saluting.

 

"I say good night to you, sir. If you might understand what i say, how may we be of assistance?"

The guards were a bit confised but didnt show it, maintaining their line.

An earth pony warrior spirit approached him, moaning, it drew its sword

 

the other nearby spirit was a pegasus , looked like it had blades attached to wings winds, it approached slower 

 

the trainees watched in interest, curious at what would happen

"Oh, gentlemen, i see you are eager to fight but... Youre doing it wrong. I mean it must be pretty boring but youre never going to find someone to fight. Especially when..." He picks a bullet from his pistol and throws it theought he earth pony,

"When you do that. I mean nobody in their mind would fight. I undertand you were warriors yes? Now tell me, wheres the honor in killing somebody who cannot defend himself. "

He dismounts his horse and goes through the soldier line, standung right on the limit of the safe-zone.

"Sir?" A guard asks

"Stand down."

The guards, confused lower their bayonets. The duke waits witha little smirk on his face.

The pegasus stopped and tilted its head as if thinking about what had been said, the earth pony stopped its advance, however its weapon was still drawn it simply growled,

 

the trainees continued watching, almost certain that the duke would get killed, they had been taught that a spirits only action is the action it died performing, which in this case was combat

 

the earth pony then turned to the pegasus spirt and attacked it instead, the 2 spirits became locked in combat

He chuckled and smiled at them both. "I'm glad to hear that." He said to the king before looking at magnum, catching his eye after he was looking at the garlic bread. He smirked and pick up the basked that the bread was in and hold it up to him. "Help yourself. It's hear for us to eat anyway. One of my cousins are working tonight so it's probable made by her. She makes the best bread you'll ever have, With garlic or otherwise." He said holding it closer under his nose.

@Gloomfury, @Lordav, "Sorry," the Kaiser said. "Garlic happens to be a bit of a trigger for bat ponies. Centuries ago, common ponies would mistake us for vampires, and somehow the rumor came about that Garlic scared us away. In reality our scentitive sense of smell would pick up the scent and allowed us to perform raids on travelers. We would dive in like hawks on a field mouse." he spoke with a sinister smile before returning back to normal. "We've gotten over it for the most part, but in this instance where it's cooked, It drives the sense wild, like taking us back to our ancestreal roots." He picked up a piece, inhaled deeply while closing his eyes and bit into it. He took his time chewing to savor the taste. "Devine." he said now opening his eyes back.

He smiled. "Glad you like it." He said before putting the basket down. "And that's very interesting. We don't really have any bat ponies here. But I've met a few over the years before we settled here. Some stallions some mares. And I got to say, bat pony mares are just gorgeous. The eyes, the dark fur, the wings." He whistled. "Hell's-bells. It really makes me want to drop everything and take a trip to Abendstern just to meet a few of them." He chuckled.

@Gloomfury, @Lordav, "Well we do take pride in our stock of mares. We actually consider white fur to be the most attractive. There's nothing wrong with darker colors and hues, but the rareness of a white coat and how it stands out among the rest of us captures the attention of all. It's only in regards to batponies though. The ones you met would have been from Equestria though since our borders although not not normally closed, aren't exactly open. Our neighboring cousins are the descendants of those who stayed behind after the Nicht War as we like to call it. They're slightly taller due to the Equestrian diet and are more traditional in the ways of our origins. I visited them once when my Uncle was the Kaiser. They're a nice bunch." "That was unexpected..." The duke told himself, he took a few steps back and whispered ro one of his guards,

"You want to bet?"

"Um, no sir?"

"Very well."

He returns to the place he was previously standing, pretty disappointed due to not bringing his camera.

The Kaiser was eating a lot of it, probably unknowinly, he had pulled the basket by him, out of reach of the other two ponies. He was so unmannered. I mean not to say that he wasnt hungry yet having to stand up to reach the food is just not polite.

 The trainees were watching the battle intently, studying the moves of the pegasus, one said "man those wing blades are cool, hey when this week is over we should try to drum up support to bring wing blades back" the others nodded in agreement "why were they discontinued?" the mare in charge spoke "I think it was because if a user wasnt careful, they could cut themselves when folding their wings"  another mare scoffed "easy fix, just make sure they are wearing some kind of harness around their sides so the blades dont cut"

One of the guards, playing cards with his mates overheard the conversation and told them.

"Wont do much good against a shot from a 12-pounder" he commented before going back to his card game.

Another guard talked with his comrades,

"These kids are supposed t be soldiers? Stuck in the past like this... Even my old lady could take em on with a rifle"

They laughed.

 

The fight was going on, the duke told the guards to return to camp, but he stayed.. still intrigued about what the hell was happening. He was not religious, and read a lot of boks on paranormal activity... but what was going on?

Back in hoofsburg, the cathedral was finally ready. It had three towers, two 40 m tall ones beside the entrance and a massive one at on the opposite side. The tall tower raised to a height of 165m, a achievment of architecture. When the sun was at its highest, it cast a shadow that would reach the edge of town. In it was a massive 500 tonne bronze bell that, when rung could be heard outside the city. the cathedral itself was buil of solid stone. It was 200m long and 100m wide. the gates were 6m tall and 0.5m thick, made out of wood and iron. More than 10,000 gargoyles were placed on the church and above the door was a massive, circular stained glass window, with a radius of 3.5m. It could hold 20,000 ponies at its max (a fifth of the city). The inside looked exactly like the magical moving picture linked above (1:1 scale... Thats how big it iz). It had a personnel of 500 priests and monks. The roof of the tall tower was pointy and had small spikes decoraring it, adding another 5m to the height. This was a building meant to awe, intimidate and impose the churches power. The beautiful stained glass windows had colours from all around the world. It was a massive building, only acomplished with the use of heavy machinery.

(Just mix the biggest catholic, protestant and orthodox churches together)

the fighting between the spirits was vicious, if they werent already spirits, both  would have died several times over, the pegasus using his wing blades in conjunction with advanced martial arts, the earth pony using his curved sword while also dodge rolling

 

The trainees continued to watch from safety a few left to go polish their armor, weapons and rifle, of the 15 trainees 7 were mares, and 8 stallions, one of the mares the rest of the traniees identified as their leader, 

 

one of the trainees spoke up to the mare "so ive been trying to figure this out all day, but I cant seem to find any tactical advantage to this armor, it doesnt offer as much protection, and at least our regular armor if hit right can take a hit from a manticores paw, this is just fabric, i feel like im wearing a full body cape" the mare nodded "yes, ive been wondering the same thing too, you would think that if they had these advance weapons, that their armor could offer protection against advance weapons...when the commander returns I will ask him about this"

 

 

Over in Hoofsberg, with the completion of the cathedral many of the pegasi were curious about it and flew up to the top and inspected the roof and the bell tower

Althoough this was indeed a sight to not be lost, the duke decided to get a stool to sit down by the battle. He got on his horse and returned to camp. He took a stool and started walking back towards his horse.

There was no way for the pegasi to walk in, the small window holes on the tower were too small to fit a pony. The only way was through the main gate and needed to recieve permission from the priest.

The mare spoke to the duke "Commander, before you go back, me and my squad have been wondering about the effectiveness of our new armor, if doesnt feel as protective or effective as our old armor, this stuff cant take a manticore paw much less a sword swipe, and a bullet would certainly go through this"

"Well firstly..." He points to a pegasi cleaning his armour,

"Is that yours?"

He takes out his pistol and fires, the bullet goes right through the front and gets out the back.

"I dont see your doing much either. Second, in battle, its going to be full of smoke, that colour can tell you who to shoot and who to not. In your armour, youd easily confuse frienf for enemy. Armour also slows you down and is useless against any modern weapon."

 

He walks to the pegasi whos armour he shot and draws his sword.

"Your swords are broad and used to hit. These are made to pierce."

He stabs the armour and the blade goes through.

"If its useless and slows you down... No point to have it now is there?"

He returns to the battle.

The leader inspected the holes in her squad mates armor "hmmm" this disturbed her deeply, how could this armor stand up to the swipe of a manticores claws, but yet the commanders sword could go through it, granted it took some effort, but it made it through she began thinking to herself Ill show this to Claria, maybe she can show the science guy she got up and walked back with the rest of her squad mates, the other pegaus, with nothing better to do, continued shining his armor even though it now had two holes in it

 

the spirits continued to battle, the pegasus had won more than the earth pony, of all the battles they had the pegasis win ratio was 13-7
