The night was rather eventless, and when morning came, the group that stayed up, were nothing short of delirious from not eating or drinking or sleeping since the test started, not one of them dared drop, fighting their best to stay conscious, or risk embarrassment or humiliation for showing too much weakness, they would certainly collapse once the day fully began, the other 2 groups woke up later and felt a little better now they had rested, but they were still hungry and weak from thirst

They were woken up by a trumpet sound,

"Alright ladies! See that dune there?"

He pointed to a dune, about 150m away. I want you to run on top of it and back for 18 times. Run! Not fly! Lets get those hoofs moving! Faster!"

The duke ordered.

"No time to rest, the enemy wont give younany. At the double!" Two soldiers were to escort them to keep them safe from external danger.

The squad started at once, the run was tiring while they were exausted, before the first lap, 2 members of the first group outright collapsed and fell unconscious, Rex ran at a pace that left him isolated from the main group, about 3 laps in the rest of the first group dropped, the main group at this point had made 10 laps and then a few isolated ponies dropped from exhaustion

All the collapsed ponies were taken to camp, yet they were not given and food or water. They were placed in the shade of the tent and left there. A soldier had to make sure non of them died, yet no onw would die after just one day. If they woke up they were ordered to continue running.

Once the laps were finished, all the ponies were exhausted and near collapse even rex and the mare who was their leader were near their braking points, at the end of the 18th lap they all reformed, the ones who had collapsed during the event were humiliated and stuck to their own little group of other humiliated ponies including rex

"Alright"

He pointed to the hole,

"Another 3m! I want it done in 1hr or else there are going to be reprecussions! Come on no time to wait. MOVE IT!"

The shovels were now rebrought to the trainees. One of the soldiers opened a small canister of water and drank half of it in view of the trainees, passing it on to his comrade.

Rex glared at the soilders before starting to dig, the others dug as fast as they could, a few still flying up to fan the group as best they could, they got the hole dug in time but were all thoroughly exhausted a few tried to fan the group but they couldnt do much, one pony, lieing on the sand saw a small scropion crawl by and attempted to eat it, biting down, seperating the tail from the body, though after a few chews he spit it out and starting coughing

A soldier saw the pony trying to eat a scorpion and passed a canister,

"Here have a drink."

It was partially filled, enough only for one drinker. The liquid was not water, it was warm and had an odd taste. But for a thirsty mouth you could not feel the difference.

the pony reach out and hesitated, torn between his need for thirst, and his desire to not fail, but thirst over took and he canister and drank from it, after taking a gulp he handed it back quickly whispering "im sorry..." the others kept trying to fan eachother

The guard laughed,

"Thats some delicious horse piss isnt it?"

He dumped the liquid on the ground, it was indeed yellow.

The duke stepped up,

"Ok, now your going to for your rifle at something, in formation!"

There were some wooden poles in a line,

"Fire at will, lets see who hits most from... 15 shots."

the ponies got in a line with rifles and started shooting, the crossbow ponies continued doing better over all, the mare tried to improve her speed with her reloading technique, but with her weakened state, she was only only able to shave off half a second at most, at the end of the exercise,  the 3 former crossbow ponies and the mare in charge were the ones who it the most

"Now, these rifles have a 1/6 change to hit, nomatter how good you aim is. In order to make the. Efficent you fire together, in lines. This will guarantee you will hit something. Now i want you to fire by rank. Lets see how many shots will hit in total."

Another group of poles was set up.

 The squad formed up in the standard Cidonian double line formation, while the first line fired, the line behind them fired once they fired all of their shots they started cleaning the action to prevent any jamming so they wouldnt have a repeat of yesterday

"Thats enough. As you see... All the poles have been hit, unlike before. Thats why firing in formation is more efficient. Now for melee, you're going to use your bayonet. The blade on the end of your rifle."

 

A course was set up. It contained of sandbags hanged from poles, follwed by sandbags on the ground and another hanged one. They would have to charge the hanged one, then pull the bauonet out, charge and stab the one on the ground, the take it out and stab the last thicker, bag. There were 3 lines so that three trainees could do it in the same time.

a lot the ponies were proficient and trained in spear use, so many held the rifles like spears, those who still had the energy to fly, hovered and held them in flight position, those who couldnt  compensated for a lack of a spear harness by positioning the rifle under his wing and then folding it, holding it in place, with the bayonett tip facing forward and charged, they hit the targets, the ponies who completed the task fanned eachother to cool eachother off

They did good yet they were a bit slow at retracting the bayonet from the sandbags. They were told to redo the course 20 times.

 

In the meantime the soldiers were staying in the shade of the tents. Some drinking others playing cards.

 

After the corses were done, they were given a 15min break.

the squad spent the entire 15 minutes alternating  fanning eachother, to keep each other cool, they were all exhausted and close to collapse, out of last resort, they hoped would give extra relief, half of the group formed a flying shade cover while the other half stayed under them and fanned the fliers, and would alternate fliers to keep the cycle going

"Alright, now for some more running."

There was another dune, 500m away, about 7m high.

"I need you to march to there, in column formation and back, in full gear. Unloaded rifle, uniform, shako, supply bag, everything strapped to your back."

(That would be around 10kilos in total... Plus extra heat from clothing)

Again they were to be escorted, for safety.

"Huh, I thought bat ponies only had dark colored fur. But I think it's mainly the eyes that dose it for me. I really like mares with green or yellow eyes." He shrugged. "Anyway, I'd still like to go to Abendstern one day. But from Flits's letter it looks like I can't take my bat." He chuckled.

 

By then Malachi's mother a two waiters came back with plates full of food, then they placed the plates in front them. On the plates was a fantastic smelling Alfredo pasta with shredded salmon on top with a garlic sauce.  Malachi's smile got bigger as he pulled his mother into a hug and kissed her cheek. "Thank ya, ma. It looks heavenly." She smiled and nod at the other leaders before heading back to the kitchen. 

 

"You're going to love this. I know it's kinda strange that we're eating fish, but it's really good. A while back we did a few tests and found out fish isn't bad for ponies, who aren't use to meat like beef or pork, to eat. Plus it tastes good."

The squad packed all of their stuff including swords, spears and crossbows, and putting on their Cidonian armor, and lined up and started marching, they marched for a long time through the desert, with the mare in front, and Rex behind her, the pony at the end of the line collapsed

The king took a small fork and tasted it.

"Oh, i must say it is absolutely marevolous. Totally different from anything i have ever tasted, complements to the chef."

Any collapsing ponies were pulled back. The mounted soldiers sometimes broke off fromtje column in order to scout for danger.

The duke watched them from camp,

"Soon theyll do anything for a bit of water." He told himself.

Rex growled "Lix...we cant let them do this to us..." Lixus, the mare who lead the group, snapped back "Quiet, look, I will question the commander when we get to the camp, im just as curious as you are and i want to know the purpose of all of this..." they eventually made it back and Lixus approached the duke "C-Commander...Permission to...speak?"

"Permission granted. Yes? What is the matter soldier?" The duke asked her.

 

The rest of the group was told to do physical activities until further notice. The soldiers were enjoying their time in the shade, smoking, drinking and laughing, in view of the tierd squad.

@Gloomfury, @Lordav, The Kaiser was mortified for a second over the mention of beef. He remembered how the illicit beef trade was discovered in Abendstern. No one questioned where the meat had come from until resident cows began to go missing. Their neighbors couldn't fathom that they had been feeding their children members of their own community. It had been been a dark time. Luckily the perpetraters were caught and the murderous acts weren't in high digits. He thought of this before taking a bit. "I've never had salmon served like this." he said. "We tend to smoke them and that's that. I must say though, not bad at all. But as far as bringing your bat with you if you chose to visit, you could, it just wouldn't be allowed in certain areas, and if it was regarded as a weapon it would have to be confiscated." "I am very confused...at the point of this training...this is supposed to be a survival test...b-but every time we show any initiative or  resourcefulness, we are punished, its making me and my squad frustrated, and starving us is making us much less efficient...I just dont understand sir.." she was very exhausted, keeping her wings out to keep her self up and allowing heat to escape from her wings
