"This. It can turn one tonne of grain i nto flour faster than any pony-driven method. This stuff? Of just some old junk we brought over to help bring you out of the Dark Ages."

 "if you want to, i am a little hungry, statues arent allowed to eat or drink while they are on shift, but recently, weve been allowed to walk around the halls, we can only go in certain places but hey, if it means i get to see more of the palace then great!"

He opened a section of his desk (it is a Ponssian-style, small, hidden office...) and took out a plate. It had a few biscuits, chips, sticks, pop-corn and a lot of other modern fast-food things.

"Yeah, not really much, keep them around if i want to snack a bit, but should be something... Well... its nice to see that at least they dont treat you as objects anymore."

 

"wait! DOnt just draw plans like that, they must be accurate and to scale."

He pulled out numbered rullers, compasses, protractors and a lot of other measuring tools, "They have to be made to scale, so that we see how pieces fit."

she took a biscuit and ate it "I didnt mind, i got paid really well for my work, my brothers have other non farming jobs, one joined the military and does a lot of heavy lifting, and usually responsible for carrying the squads gear, and sometimes when necessary, he pulls the wagons and chariots.  My other brother works for a pegasus as a pack salespony, hes loaded with tons of bags filled with all sorts of stuff, and the pegasus walks around town selling the items in the bags, and my brother gets some of the money, its one of the few ways a bare-back can experience the city"

 

Roxin looked at the equipment, "Well normally I just write the measurements, I can draw really straight and clean, circles were the hardest to master"

"Why are they just lifting? I mean cant you use animals for that... surely there have to be other jobs in the city other than farming... and lifting... Why doesnt he open a shop of his own?"

 

"Everything has to be drawn exactly to scale... otherwise we wouldn be able to figure out how the pieces go together. TO make machinery you need complex, machined pieces, and they are pretty hard to get custom-ordered ones. A single wrong measurment might fool you into thinking the mechanism works... then... the whole thing is useless."

"Well, most jobs in the cities that cant be done by pegasus are done with unicorn servants, and there isnt much in the way of animals, I mean theres cows and chickens for livestock, but those arent military animals, the military mostly use manticores, my brother told me they recently have been trying to tame the rockidiles that live in the river, but have had little success...And according to my other brother, his business partner told him that its cheaper than  opening up and building and maintaining a market stall or shop, plus you can bring the store right to the customer, it sounded so facinating, i was actually happy when I was selected to be apart of the palace's statues all I have to do is stand around and I get to be in the palace, Im also the one who makes the most money!"

 

 

Roxin nodded "hmm yes I see your point. well then fetch me a servant, I will need some pony to hold the tools to the paper as I draw"

"Well he cant, not in the city any way, bare-backs arent liked in the city so even he did scrounge up the money to open a shop and buy supplies, no pony would shop there, he could possible set up a little shop in a village outside of the big cities, viliages are more accepting of bare-backs than the city ponies are "

He takes out a blueprint of a basic stream locomotive, and a drawing of a railway

"managing to carry tremendous payloads. All you need is a path for it to move on. Two long iron paths built between two cities are perfect. How long would it take you to carry a load of 2000 tonnes about.... 120km?"

"I dont think his business partner would like him walking all the way up there to start his own shop, how would he be able to maintain a shop up there, and make it back down to Clero, a city located in the middle of the kingdom, in time to make his rounds?"

"What if i told you it could be done in little over an hour and a half? All with a simple locomotive, and there are some more complex ones that can do that even faster."

Roxin thought about it, "Well then, i think this thing needs to be constructed then" A unicorn servant came in "Right on time...servant, i need you to take these tools and use them as i instruct!" the unicorn nodded and magically grabbed the ruler and protractor and put them on the paper while Roxin carefully drew them out

"Inside that port city we have... im sure he can... i could help him as i have a few... connections."

 

"You should know that railway parts and machinary cannot be hoof-made, there is a certain degree of quality and uniformity that can only be achieved in factories. Until you get a mass-producing line of your own, i suggest you order the pieces from our factories. TRhe laying of the railway is simple and im sure your workers could easily be taught."

"I will have to tell my brother about when I go back to the farm!"

 

Roxin replied "Then we would have to start soon then, the river doesnt flood for another 2 months, so we still have a large workforce of off duty farmers, also, how much smoke do these steam engines make? Ive visited the factories in Clexto, excuse me, hoofsberg, and the ammount of smoke they throw out is revolting, I have a few theroies on how to help that problem, but that will come in good time"

"... question... have you ever seen a movie?"

 

 

"Oh... its nothing like that... it spits out a very little amount... and it disipates fast as well. No, there is absolutely no way to stop the smoke, as that is not only smoke, its ash. I have heard about your pegasi somehow managing to move clouds, but if they would fly in that smoke and inhale that... theyd get a lung infection with possibly fatal effects."

"Yes. I figured the smoke would be harmful, as i said ive been playing with ways to prevent it or at least control it, you cannot stop a fire from creating smoke, I took a look inside one of the factories up there, even the inside looked abysmal"

"What do you expect... its efficiency. A small space, thousands of ponies building productsin the smallest place possible while another thousnad burn coal. Coal is our main resource.... you dont know about it dont you?

"I know of coal, Im sure we dont have it in quite the numbers you do, heres its mainly used as a writing utensil" he showed his drawing utensil "as you can see" he put it down "If we used our coal in the manner you do, we would have no coal in the span of a year at most"

He pulled out an old projector, switching it on. light started coming out of it as it projected on the wall, he took out an old roll and placed it on, soon a  black and white film started to play on the wall.

"Usually u eat this at one..."

he gave her some pop-corn. It should be a breath-taking sight for any first-seers. (Fact, Once some people went to see a movie for their first time and in the film a train was arriving at a station, the camera was somehow on the rail so it looked like the train was coming for them... they starting running away from their seats in fear until they realized it was just a 2D XD)

 

"Coal has a tremendous amount of energy stored in it, just waiting for it to be exploited. It spent millions of years to form... now we use it. The discovery of Steam power must be one of the the biggest dicoveries in the world."

Cyrilla was amazed and bewildered at the display before her "Are you sure theres not a unicorn hidden somewhere casting a spell on the wall?" looking around the room

 

 Roxin  spoke , "wouldnt a more efficient means be to have a unicorn power the machinary with its magic?"

"No, its just light... and dark... forming what you see. Interesting, right?"

 

"Can unicorn magic produce 100,000 bullets per 8hrs. Can it melt iron into steel and steel into machinery? (Lets remember... u dont have iron... only bronze =p) Can i take 500 ponies 300km iin 1.5 hrs? This is something only coal can do. Magic is slow, magic is inefficient, magic is the past. The path to the future and sucess is the way of science and rationalism. We have not used  magic nd look where we are, the pinnacle of pony technology, the envy of the world. Magic is nothing cmpared to the power that science contains, and to add to this, science advances everyday, while magic mostly stays the same."

"Well now you make it seem like we should just stop using magic all together, you cant just take away a unicorns ability to use magic, they are all born with it, just as long as they are taught how to use it" Roxin continued drawing "magic is more useful than you think"

A lot of the time, the duke was looking at her.. not at the movie, but at soon as he though she ould see him, hed turn towards the projection.

 

"I have never said that. I said that magic is old, inefficient and slow. Those who practice it are free to do so. I never mentioned taking it away from nuicorns, im just saying that the ecomical structure, millitary and infrastructure must not realy on magic.  They must rely on the more efficient way, that is science."

Cyrillias turquoise coat was neatly trimmed, and her mane was short and completely straight, in a style that matched most of the upper class ponies, she had eye makeup on that gave it a stylize looked and made the whites of her eye look brighter, her cutie mark was 3 stalks of wheat, her tail was also straight and black, she was smiling staring intently at the screen

 

Roxin having finished his plans but them in a box and walked back "You mentioned a metal called steel and its relation to iron, tell me about the formation of steel"

The duke (which was standing till now) sat down on a cushioned chair roughly 0.5m from her. His eyes mostly forced themseves to look sideways but he did his best not to turn his head.

 

 

"Wait... you dont know about steel. Its a way to turn the already strong iron into one of the strongest mouldable materials know to pony. Its simple, you take the iron ore and, by removing  impurities such as nitrogen, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and excess carbon are removed from the raw iron, and alloying elements such as manganese, nickel, chromium and vanadium are added to produce different grades of steel."

 

He pulls out a schematic of a Bessemer Converer and continues explaining (There.... read that if u want to)
