The trainees jumped at the loud and sudden noise, one spoke up "Will we still be using hoof to hoof combat techniques? As the textbook says "A soldier is only as effective as the hooves they were born with" " the others nodded, Claria walked over to a part of the room and grabbed the text book the traniees have been useing and handed it to the duke "read this over on the way to the drop off point"

The book was filled with medieval-style techniques, useless against modern armies. If it were hes duty to train these ponies, he would do it the proper way. Harsh discipline and cooperation. They will become a real fighting unit, not a bunch of solditary sword-wavers. Nevertheless he continues reading... To pass time. He had got his guards to join them to help with the disciplinary issues. They would arrive after they were dropped off.

The book outlined and explained various advanced sword techniques and maneuvers including passages on how to take on multiple opponents at once, there was also a chapter on hoof to hoof combat showing various maneuvers, moves and grapples and throws and how to effectively fight while flying, the desert survival chapter listed everything about the desert that was known to them including what wild life could and could not be eaten and which wild life to avoid, including an entire sub chapter on just manticores, it advised trainees to avoid manticores because a single manticore could easily kill a squad of traniees, there was also a chapter on ranged weapons like crossbows and how to effectively use cover while reloading and how to be accurate while flying, every chapter had detailed drawings and diagrams to go along with it

 

all of the traniees and the duke with claria were loaded into a large troop wagon and were on their way to the drop off point, all the trainees were in full combat gear, including their armor and swords, spears and shields, 3 of them had crossbows, they were instructed to bring them as it was part of their combat gear

The book made everything easy in theory but no book could prepare you for the creativity of a real opponent. The chapter oin ranged weapons were again, outdated. And what would hoof to hoof combat moves help against a speeding bullet? Did this mean that if they killed a manticore they would get a prize (the squad, not the duke). it was time for these ponies to see how wars were fought for real, outside their isolation box.

the wagon stopped once they were sufficiently out in the middle of the desert the traniees got out and began setting up a camp and the wagon was unloaded, Claria gave the duke a map "here, avoid the blue areas" the map was a map of the surrounding area, where were a few dark blue areas indicating a lake, as this wasnt the deep desert, it was still habitable, but there were large patches of teal blue which represented large clusters of spirits and should be avoided at night however it seemed the drop of point was within seeing distance of the border of one of the light blue patches, Claria continued talking "you may alter what you need from the book, but at least use it as a reference or else they will probably see you as crazy, also if you see them fighting, they are sparing, it helps train them and pass the time, also your comment about mares, they make just as good of soldiers" she then flew up "Alright, the duke will be training you as you survive out here! I will return in a week to either see soldiers, or corpses" she flew off and the wagon departed

The duke let them do their thing for an hour and a half, letting them rest, talk or do stuff. Soon 20 ponies riding horses came into view. The duke spoke up, but he was no longer the polite pony he was in court, he sounded like a drill instructor.

 

"Okay you group of rascals, as you know i am the Duke of Uxbridge, but you will be refering to me as "sir" or "commander"!"

 

The horsemen arrived behind him.

" You think your going to be like the rest of the squads, a bunch of sword waving brutes? Well youre wrong! Im going to make soldoers out of you. REAL SOLDIERS! Im going to break EVERY SINGLE THOUGHT about that medieval bunch of nonsense!" He refered to the manual. The guards dismounted their horses, they were about half a head taller than the average pony, all had serious looks. They took off packages from their mounts. They contained rifles, ammunition and 15 daggers. They also had 15 old ragged uniforms.

"Now, i want those tins off you. Shields, spears and everything. NOW!"

The trainees did as they were told and removed their armor, neatly stacking the armors in an arranged fashion infront of each of their tents, with their weapons and sheild placed beside each suit, the then lined up in a line facing the duke, they were spread apart, each spread their legs a bit and their wings flared out, it was obvious that this was the standard attention stance, since he addressed himself as commander they willing followed his instructions

"Each of you shall take a uniform, rifle, dagger and ammunition pouch! You have been told that you are as strong as your hooves... Well... Look at the pony on your left! And look at the pony to your right! Those are your hooves! Alone, you are nothing! Together you are a unit. You will move like a unit, fight as a unit and if need be... Die as a unit!"

 

The guards split the equipment accordingly and waited for them to dress up.

 

"Now, in your pouch you will fid two compartments! One contains metal shards, the ither contains a small container with black powder! Those are the two things that will make your weapon kill. And remember, besides your fellow unit, NOBODY is a better friend than your weapon!"

The traniees put on their uniforms, however they were a very tight fit due to their wings, their folded wings bulged from the sides of the uniform, and it was visible that the trainees were in discomfort, but regardless they went back in their formation, although with out their wings flaring out there was considerably more distance between them

The guards stepped behing the trainees and used their daggers to cut holes in their uniforms, through which they took out their wings.

 

He showed them how to fire their weapon and made them repeat, each having to fire 100 shots. They had to pour in the gunpowder, place the bullet and ram it in with a rods. These rifles were pretty much flintlocks, the only difference being they used bullets, not metal balls.

 

They were not allowed and breaks until every one of em fired 100 successful shots. It would be a tiring job, they had to stand on their back hoofs while the front ones had to work non-stop.

The trainees were relieved to have have access to their wings and used them to their full advantage, stiffening out their wings to maintain balance, the ponies who had used crossbows were much more adept at it than the rest of them, one hovered in place while shooting much like how they used crossbows, the crossbow ponies were also much more accurate than the rest of them

They were ordered in a tighter 5x3 square formation, they had no space to ise their wings. 15 guards also went in the same formation.

"Okay, now many of you would think that weapon is way too slow. Firing twice a minute. But this is where the squad comes in. On the battlefield the single most important thing is your orders. They will ensure you will do as you should. This is called volley fire, the best way to ensure a constant stream of death. You are formed in three lines, ranks. You will follow orders."

He turns to the guards. The firt rank was kneeled while the other two stood up,

"Firsy rank, present! Fire!"

The first rank fired and immidiately started reloading

"Second rank fire!"

The second rank fired and then kneeled, started reloading.

"Third rank, fire!"

The third rank fired and started reloading while standing. By that time the first rank finished reloading,

"First rank fire!"

 

This went on fr another 6 cycles,

"As you may see, even if it takes so long to reload, you can ensure the enemy is always met by a wave of death. Now it is your turn, we shall start slowly and work up, for 20 cycles!"

the traniees did so, the crossbow ponies were still better shooters, they continued shooting until they ran out of bullets, however along the way the firing became less and less organized, as all the dust and sand spraying up from the shooting made pulling back the hammer on the flint lock increasingly harder to do, even the ponissian guards ran into this trouble, the trainees stopped when the ammo they had ran out

(The ponssian guard had stopped after 6 shots... They are keeping theure bullets for protection, only the trainees continued)

 

"What is this ladies! Why are you slowing down? Do you want a break? How about some ice-cream eh? Give them another pack!"

The guards did so,

"You are going to repeat this until you do it perfectly. No breaks no pauses. On the field you can stay as much as 8 hours doing this! Now from the top!"

one of the trainees piped up "Commander, the weapons are becoming harder to fire, the more we shoot, the harder the little hammer here is to pull back" another one spoke "mine wont even budge anymore!" he said  hitting the action of the weapon in an attempt to get it to move "stupid thing..." another complained

The mistake of one of you is a mistake for all!"

All the trainees do the push ups with ease, they were all in top physical condition, if anything this was a short break for them, and even a few did a few more push ups, by now they were starting to get hungry, the sun was at its highest a mare spoke "commander, may I speak?"

The soldiers, who had placed up some tents, were sitting down, smiking or having a drink while the trainees were told to clean their weapons. They were expected to clean the muzzle of powder, polish the barrel and oil the firelock mechanism.

The mare continued "don't you think it's time we started hunting or foraging ?overall mission here is to survive, I think we should be gathering food and locating a reliable source of water" she told him "we were taught that the first thing you should do in a survival situation is find shelter and start storing up food" Edited April 24, 2015 by Skullbuster

He pointed to a tent and rolled her a conic roll.

"That is your shelter, you have it with you at all times! I have a question, have you come here to fight or to eat? A soldier can and must go without food for at least 4 days!"

He also makes a sign tothe guards, they give each trainee a small 3L flask.

"That is your water for the next 4 days! You eat, drink an sleep when you are permitted to by your superior officer, am i understood?!"

"But how will this demonstrate that we can survive out in the middle of desert? I understand the training, but I thought our main focus would be survival, to demonstrate if we get lost in the desert, we know how to take care of ourselves" one of the pegasi trainees flew up to look around, looking for any fort of food or water

"Hey you! Who gave you permission to leave, private!? Get down here!"

The pegasus flew back down "I was searching for for food and watcher, theres a few berry bushes to the south and to the far north is a lake, about a few hours walk or a 30 minute flight if we speed over there" he landed "I tried finding some sort of cave or rock that could be used as shade, couldnt find one big enough"
