Just how long were these two going to fight? The duke started thinking. Theu were dead. They could fight for years.

"Okay, since it doesnt seem we're needed... Im just going to walk away."

 

The guards took out a bag that contained a Ponssian food, popcorn. They put it over the fire and it started poping. Making sounds that could be confused with gun shots to an unexperienced ear.

At the sound of battle, the trainees instincts took over and they scrambled for their gear, throwing on their harness and helmet, grabbing what weapons they could and formed a circle formation with an inner circle and an outer circle, spears, swords, daggers, rifles, and crossbows sticking out of the formation, the mare hovering over the middle with a rifle looking around for the danger

An earth pony guard saw them and started laughing, he was soon joined by the others.

"Look at these hopeless bunch. Cant even tell the difference between a gun and food!"

He took some popcorn and shoved it his mouth. He then took another one and showed it to them.

"Ohh... Look out... Its a killer!" He threw it in his mouth. The other continued laughing.

"Wait, you send trainees into battle? Before they finish their training?"

 

The duke follows her to 'the fortress'

"Not really, other than the fact he lost his sense of humor after a tragic accident, you might find him a bit... Too serious"

He whispered the last part.

The airship descended into port. A formation 20 soldiers stopped beside it and saluted. The port was full of ponies. Giant cranes loaded ships or even picked them out the water. massive cargo ships left port regularly. Soldier patrols marched regularly while others manned the defenses. The entire coastline had been highered and fortified, making the harbors the only land-able places by sea. This was built in order to have an edge from a naval enemy. Each 100m of sea wall were followed by a fort, manned by 100 soldiers. The walls and the forts were all armed with cannon batteries, ready to blast any incoming hostiles. A horse-drawn carriage (yup horses... Ponssian-unique) drove in order for the diplomats to get in.

"That's perfectly fine with me. After all, we're here for diplomacy, not to tell jokes."

 

"Hmm... That would sound very nice equal... But I don't know: What use we could get to unicorns... They haven't been in these lands over 5 years... And I am not sure does anypony of us remember: How to work with unicorns... And what comes to our earth ponies: they are expert at farming. We have many farmers feeding our 5 cities and using greatly their resources. Even though farming is not our best skill, we are still good at it." Blue Crystal said to Silver Gleam.

 

"We are on our best at crafting." he added.

"While the Earth Ponies of Medeis are very good at mining and working with stone, they know nothing about farming. Any amount of agricultural knowledge your ponies have would be immensely useful."

The mare was upset "I think the important thing here is our reaction time, besides we were not told that you would have food that sounded similar to gun fire, and then train us to recognize that sound as danger" the squad kept its formation, and she continued to hover over them

 

in hoofsberg, very slowly a few Cidonians entered the cathedral, and decided to sit through a sermon

"Well... Yeah... Stay in that formation, you could have a giant sign above you saying 'Hey, Cannons, Fire Here'" another one laughed.

"And how do you thonk you'll reload your rifle while flying?" Another guard teased the mare.

The carriage drove through the busy streets. Carriages and horse-drawn trams were everywhere. The sky was filled with smoke from the giant factory sector, as the wind was blowing over the city. Soldier squads of 20men patroled the streets while policemen regulated everything else. The building were crowded together yet colurful, and the closer they got to the town center they became larger an richer. The carriage eventually stopped in front of the govermental building (look for people's palace, romania... Something like that). To say for short, it was huge.

at the last comment the mare smirked, taking this as a challenge,  she set the rifle vertical and grabbed it with her hind hooves about half way up the gun, so the barrel was in easy reach of her fore hooves, she then poured the powder in and rammed the shot, then tossing it up, while it was in mid air she hit the hammer back then grabbed it with her fore hooves ready in firing position "you were saying?"

"Then: It may be best in that case, that some of our earth ponies will go to Medeis... But I am not the one who would "force" them to go. They must make their own decision: Will some of them go or not. I will listen my pony citizen opinions." Blue Crystal said to Silver glow, while looking at the window, but still sitting on a chair.

 

"Our lands has no stone by the way. Neither is Metal or Wood. It all disappeared as well over 5 years ago." Blue Crystal added.

The guard looked at his watch.

"53 seconds..."

 

He stood up, gave his watch to his friend beside him, picked up his rifle and fired in the ground. Her immidiately tilted it, pouring the gunpowder and ramming the bullet, fired and then reloaded again. The guard beside him said

"44 seconds."

He smirked

"44 seconds, two shots, your twice as dead." The guards laughed as the guard stood down to contine his game.

In the cathedral a large crowd of ponssians had already gathered, awed by the size of the building. The light shew theough the large circular window and onto the altar where the priest started with a prayer. He then went on explaining how the world was created and how He sacrificed his life to save pony-kind. Bread and wine was given to every attended representing the... You know the drill.

Undaunted the mare continued "I dont think i did too bad for my first time trying that technique, also taking into consideration this was the first day ever using this kind of weapon, but ill get better" she looked down at her squad "Alright squad disband, come on, lets see if we can forage for food even if the commander wont let us eat it, we can still demonstrate we know how to survive out here on our own" the squad got out of the formation and followed the mare "I think Rex said there was some berry bushes to the south, as long as we can see the campfire we will be fine" another pony flew up a little higher "yeah i see some, looks about a 5 minute walk" he flew back down, the squad started off to the berries

"Should we let them go?" One of the guards asked.

"Bah, its them that are going to be in trouble, not us. Its them that cant follow simple orders." Another replied, "and besides, the commander didnt order us to keep an eye on thosw rookies."

"But what if one of those giant lion-crab things attack them."

"Hanz, look around, its flat, we could easily spot one if it approached."

The squad reached the berries and picked them, filling up their helmets, using them as baskets, then brought them back to the camp and poured the berries into a pile, satisfied, the squad sat around eachother "I hope the commander realizes that this amount of water will not last us 4 days, this might get us through one day, if we drink it sparingly" the mare nodded, "I will request the commander move the camp to the near by lake Rex found earlier once the sun gets to its highest" another spoke "Well now what?" the mare shrugged "wanna spare?" the whole squad nodded at this idea "alright, this time i want 5 opponents, Ive become too good at 4 I want to test my skills"  sparing began in a 5 on 1 fight, which the mare seemed to be holding her own, but was struggling a little, sparing between various squad members went on all through the night until morning

 

 

many of the cidonians who decided to attend were very anxious and unsure, most feared some kind of rejection or judgement by the Ponissians

The duke fell asleep on his chair, the next morning, the spirits were still fighting.

"Well... seeya chaps." he said as he walked to his horse.

 

The guards, who had slept in their dragoon armor woke up to find it was boling hot, they quickly took it off, one of them dropped a bit of water on it and it sizzled.

"Wow, we nearly baked there."

A guard looked at the trainees,

"God, theyre still fighting? OH... all that noise made it so hard to get some sleep"

"Let them... theyre goning to be exhausted after what the commander has in store for them."

"Yeah, hes going to deshydrate them as hell. theyre gonna be begging for water."

Two priests approached the Cidonian group, noticing they were 'foreign', they were carrying bread and wine.

"The body and blood of his Lord?" he asked them holding the bread basket.

The squad had stopped sparing and were resting themeselves, the traniees, who had spent their entire lives in the desert, were fairing better than the soldiers, occasionally they would fan eachother with their wings to cool off, a few even flew over to where Rex, who by now had woken up and was stopping himself from having a panic attack as that would be a sign of weakness, and fanned their wings on his head, the mare was talking to him "How are you holding up" Rex grumbled "it sucks" the mare just shook her head "I guess you shouldnt of given in to the weakness like that" Rex got angry "hey it hurt!" the mare rolled her eyes "oh boo hoo, cant you just dig your self out?" Rex sighed "thats what ive been trying to do, its difficult, but ill do it! im sure this is some sort of test" The mare shook her head " well good luck with that" and walked back to the rest of the squad, most of them looked roughed up, the mare in charge who was clearly the better fighter, had the least amount of wear on her

 

as the sun rose higher, the spirits vanished

 

The Cidonians, accepted the bread, copying what they saw the other ponies doing

The duke arrived at camp, he observed the berries, realizing the squad had left.

"Okay, attetion! Now its time to resist against your needs. All of you, water canisters here." he pointed to the ground in front of him. "It seems you cant learn discipline nicely, you got to learn it the hard way!"

The guards marched beside him. No longer the laughing ponies playing cards by the fire. They seemed like totaly different ponies when on duty. No expressions, no questioning, no laughs, nothing.

The second priest than gave them a cross to kiss and blessed them, walking onwards to the next. When they finished serving the crowd, they returned to the altar, the prayer continued.

the squad seemed very confused, one pony placed his can down and shrugged "It wouldnt of lasted that long anyway" a few others including the mare placed their can down, another one said "I wasnt going to drink it anyway, I think if we took given help we would of failed" the mare just rolled her eyes, the last pony to do it refused "this unis trying to kill us!" he was then wing slapped by the pony next to him "shut it, your showing weakness, your embarrassing the rest of us" the pony gulped "right..." and set his can down

"If it was trying to kill you..."

He lifted his hoof. The front rank of guards kneeled and aimed, the second also aimed.

"I could've eaily done it  by now." he put his hoof down and the guards stood up.

"But what im going to do is nearly kill you. lets see how much you can resist without anything."

He pointed to the opposite direction to the lake,

"We march that way" he turned to a guard,

"Oh, and dig up that kid." he saluted and dug him up, he was put in front of the duke,

"Do you have any more comments you'd like to share?" he asked wit a fake smile.

Two guards picked up the empty canisters and dumped them in the saddles of their horses.

Rex just glared at him then turned around to follow the others

 

as the squad starting walking, a pony spoke "Ha, I knew this was a test!" the mare laughed a bit "well all I know is the first one of you who shows weakness gets a somersault kick to the head" another groaned, "you almost broke my leg with that move last night" he said limping, as they walked they would occasionally fan themselves, while all of his squadmates chatted among them selves, Rex just walked quietly, a permanent expression of anger on his face

The duke and his guards were just trotting along on their horses. The guards switched their helmets for foreign legion desert shakos. The  duke had some kind of umbrella above his head. Three of the guards had crates stuck to their saddles. These were some kind of isolationed boxes that managed to keep the water, or juice, from heating up. yet these were only for them.

"C'mon lads, we aint got all day, at the double!"

The duke ordered.

The squad went to a hover in order to move faster with less effort than running or walking faster, still fanning eachother at regular intervals, at this point there were a considerable distance away from the original camp, one of the trainees spoke to his squad as they hovered "You know i dont get it, we are supposed to be out here surviving, but these ponies dont seem to be interested in survival, they brought their own food and water, and every effort we make to live of the land and master the desert, the commander disproves of it" Rex grumbled "because he hates us and likes seeing us in pain" the other pony thought "I dont think thats it or hed be torturing all of us" Rex glared at him, the other pony shrugged "hey its not my fault you showed weakness when presented with a test" Rex growled and flew a little faster to get away from him

After walking for about 4 hours the duke ordered to set camp, they were in the middle of the desert, no food or water in sight.

"Alright, i want a trench dug around the camp, 1m deep, and a 5m deep hole in the middle of the camp!" 

The guards set up their tents, this time they set a large one up for the trainees as well. They passed on shovels to them and tied their horses to a pole they secured in the ground.

Now, that all the surroundings lokexd the same, the commander was not sure if he was in a safe area or a blue area on the map, but oil and fire around the camp should do the trick. Anyway it seemed those spirits found it easy to fight each other, for quite a long time.

The squad got to digging the trench, it took them about 2 hours, but they got it done, about half of them flew over to dig the center hole, the other half fanning them to keep them cool, at this point the hunger and thirst was starting to get to them, as they began to get weaker

The guards pulled up some vertical wooden Xs made from two poles. about 4 of them in the middle of camp. A guard approached the duke,

"Permission to spaek sir?"

"Granted."

"They seem tired and huingry sir, i dont think theyll make it."

"Do you remember your training soldier?"

"Um, yes sir... but we were used to this kind of treatment from a young age, im not sure theyll take it."

"I wont let them die, ill just follow the routine. We have to break them phsycologically. When the body is at extremes, it will accept anything for its needs. The brain will give in, they will surrender to the training."

"But sir... havent you heard about the 23rd, half of them died during training..."

"Comment taken soldier, back in line"

he saluted and retreated.

"Im going to make them obey one way or another." the duke told himself."

The squad finished the hole, fanning each other a pony spoke "how long do you think we can last?" he said looking up at the sun "Without food or water? the book said that being in the open desert without food or water for any extended period of time is a death sentence, and I dont know where a water source is, the only pony with a map is the commander as hes doesnt seem the sharing type" another responded "Im sure this is just a test, he wants to see how long we can last, im sure after a day and we are on deaths edge he will give us some food and water" a 3rd pony responded "ah! but thats what he wants you to do, accepting his food would cause us to fail, all provisions must be harvested from the desert, remember?" the other pony nodded "hmm true, very true" meanwhile Rex continued to sulk, feeling embarrassed and humiliated, that he submitted to torture and was denied a fight, and on top of that failed to block the first throw, he sat isolated from the group

(4hrs + 2 hrs for the trench + 4 for the hole... day is over =p)

 

The sun was setting and the duke walked up to them.

"Alright, guard duty," he split them into 5 groups of 3, "each of ou are going to stay up one night every 5 days. making sure nothing comes around here"

Beside te dukes tent, the guards placed the drink and provisions boxes. and went to their tents. After splitting the time table for guard duty, he went to sleep in his tent. Two Ponssian soldiers arlso stood up for guard duty, standing on the opposite side of the camp.
