Could Fluttershy be avoiding conflict, because she had too much as a filly?

In my previous topic, I asked why Fluttershy was so optamistic about the = town. Many said it was because she wanted to avoid conflicts at all costs by hoping the town is a politeness paradise. That's actually a plausible conclusion, which leads me to another theory. Could Fluttershy be avoiding conflict, simply because.... she was too involed in conflict as a filly?

We can trace back to Seasons 1&2 where Flutters was picked on by her classmates. But what if it ran deeper than that. What if it wasn't just her classmates she had to put up with, but also her family? A while back, I proposed a headcannon that Fluttershy grew up with a dysfunctional family. If we add that to the equation, then it would make Fluttershy an abused punching bag in cloudsdale, which would certainly explain where her timidity comes from.

However, there's one more theory that could explain why she avoids conflict at all costs. What if, Fluttershy did something she deeply regretted in her past, that caused her to avoid social contact to prevent any future conflicts. This explains her reluctance to fight, and her hopefulness in the context of a positive outcome. It's not that Fluttershy is weak or helpless, rather she acts this way because she doesn't want to create more trouble, or cause conflict herself. She denies her true abilities to keep others safe.

What do you think of this theory? Also, if you're wondering why I make a lot of Fluttershy topics, I simply find her character the most fun of the mane 6 to analyze.

The theory you just suggested actually reflects my personality a bit... I used to be a twisted, hateful person. It was through MLaaTR and MLP that I became ashamed of who I was... And now I act the exact oppisite... Okay, so not a clear reflection, but somewhat similar.

Well, what we know about Fluttershy's character is that her present actions and behaviors are partially influenced by how a number of her peers and other individuals treated her; case in point the three bullies from her younger years. That has lead to years of issues with self-confidence and, as such, has her avoiding as much conflict and drama as possible. We saw how she was in Filli Vanilli, so I think it's natural how she acted coming into the town, and in a sense it's hard to blame her. She's had a very difficult life.

Both are a possibility... But the first is more certain about being bullied.

The first one seems plausible, but I don't think there is much evidence to support the second.

When I read this thread title, I thought her "having too much as a filly" meant she used to be an alcoholic. happy.png

It would make sense, she's a shy little pony, hence her name. I think it's a psychological matter. Think of conflicts like before she became assertive and let ponies get in front of her in lines without getting upset, or when Gilda basically ran her over and she flew away crying instead of standing up for herself. I think it makes perfect sense.

I'm with you on both theories. Maybe the thing that she regretted in the past, if any, was got to do with her "dark side"? As in The Stare or how she acted in The Best Night Ever...

That or she was always like this from the beginning because of the way her parents raised her and she like animals which means she doesn't mind spending some time away from other ponies with them because its very calming and peaceful to her and she got this same vibe from the town where she found it really nice how the town was so peaceful and calm.
