Help With Animation

Hey! So I have recently been getting into drawing a lot more than usual, slowly getting better. After watching the new animation for Lullaby for a Princess (here if you haven't seen it, it's amazing), I feel pretty inspired to try and get into animation. So here's my question; That style clearly isn't using Flash's tools, so I'm wondering how you would go about using something such as Sai (or photoshop I suppose) to animate frame-by-frame? I know you can go about it with layers in Sai, changing opacity to mimic the onion tool in Flash, and then save each individual layer, but is there any better way to do that?

Thanks for the help!

Use half-sheets of paper and draw by hand.

Not kidding- I did this once and while it's sort of time-consuming, I think it's a good alternative to using expensive or difficult computer-based tools.

Others will have better solutions, though. Good luck!!

Yea, I've done a bit of pencil/paper animation, but it's hard to rival the color and shading possible with CGI. As far as expenses go, I already own Sai, and I also have the adobe suite student licence as I am a student.

But thanks for the advice :D

I don't know what exact software was used, but it could have just as easily been done in Flash. However, you could also use Toon Boom or something. Regardless, you'll still have to learn the principles of animation, which is way more important than what software you use.

Thanks, I'll take these both into consideration :D

If anyone has any other tips/ideas, please let me know!

If you want good tutorials on how to animate as a whole and things to think about whole doing so, I found these to be relatively short but very very useful!

Plus it's Harry Partridge so how could you not? ;P

I believe the core animation actually was done in Flash. The backgrounds weren't, but that doesn't mean the animation wasn't.
Anyhow, I don't really have any tips as I'm a puppet Flash animator rather than a animator of hand-drawn things, sorry ^^'
