man dude man 555 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 Now I know its not a competition, but I was just eager to see how many other bronies were rolling with the mentality the show and fandom put off, and how many were just in it for the satire and animation. I mean, both are outstanding, so I would imagine most of us are in it for both, I just see so many bronies off on witch hunts against other bronies for dumb stuff, conflict of interests, difference in opinions, dumb stuff.. Im cool, Im not buggin, I am just being real here for a second, and wondering If anyone else has taken as much away from this as I have, because I gotta be honest, I used to be Sunset Shimmer and Nightmare Night on a good day...
NotoriousSMALL 1,984 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 I don't watch the show for it's philosophy or it's "satire" (what?). It's just a fun show to watch. I've always been open and friendly and MLP hasn't changed me for the better or for worse because most of the lessons at the end of the show are things I already knew and did. Guest July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 (edited) Eh, not really. I just watch the show because I find it amusing. Besides, all the morals the show teach can pretty much be cut down to "be nice, love your next like yourself, be respectful - and most importantly, don't be a dick". And my parents pretty much taught me that when I was 4-5 years old. Edited July 22, 2015 by Guest
I used to be a stranger 7,993 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 The Show is meh at its aesops. I mean they're a lot better than shows which exist purely for entertainment alone, but obviously a great deal of context and caveat is neutered in order to focus on character development and brevity. Lots of that material is also subject to the People-Who-Make-Sure-No-One-Sues-Us Board (a part of Hasbro's PWMSNOSUB Department) and filtered for things that would gain flak and attract bad press. For example, when the Cakes had babies, I'm sure the story was raked over the coals a few times to make sure nothing about sex was noticeably implied. Sunwalker 981 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 It is a show that I enjoy watching, and that is pretty much everything about it. I like watching kids cartoons, and MLP is one of them. This forum is as far I am willing to venture into the MLP fandom, I am here because I really enjoy its atmosphere . 1 "Fairy tales are more than true, not because they tell us that dragons exist; but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten." ~ G. man dude man 555 July 22, 2015 Author Share July 22, 2015 There are a lot of underlying messages that kind of just go without saying, I agree with that, but at the same time, I guess I am asking how or if it has improved your perspectives. I believe there are a lot of subtle philosophies being portrayed behind the fun cartoon humor. I enjoy it for the artistic outlet and the animation, and the stories that come each Saturday morning.. but I am saying in my enjoying those aspects of the show, it has molded a strengthened philosophy of what it means to be a "true true" friend. I guess I am just saying I find pretentious and condescending bronies a little annoying, just wondering who is enjoying the friendship it has brought if it has been brought to you at all..
Gearbox10mm 794 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 I believe there are a lot of subtle philosophies being portrayed behind the fun cartoon humor. This.^ I do think the show has helped to make me be a better person and friend. Sure, most "kids" shows have good morals and lessons they are trying to push but the underlying morality of MLP feels somehow different and much stronger than most. Watching this show makes me want to become a better friend and to be more accepting of others. The characters themselves are a huge part of it as well. I want to strive to have the determination and strong work ethic of Applejack, I wish I was as driven and goal oriented as Rainbow Dash is and so on.... To dismiss MLP out of hand as just another children's show about cartoon horses is a grave disservice. It really is much deeper than that.
CaptainDoubloon 856 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 (edited) I just sit back and enjoy watching the show. I try not to think too deeply into it, I feel like it might ruin the experience if I did. I do agree the show is much more then a children's cartoon. Edited July 22, 2015 by Seeker Dragonheart
Ribbonfree 2,383 July 22, 2015 Share July 22, 2015 Gearbox does have a point, even if the morals are outstandingly basic there are either nuances we missed or we sometimes need reminders, and sometimes the dumbest and most repetitive things are functionally what works for educating us. I used to be totally in the camp of 'lel childrens cartoon I just like the characters and fandom yo' but when I watched Equestria Games I realized even this kids cartoon could still affect me...
Pinkie-Guy 563 July 26, 2015 Share July 26, 2015 There's nothing the show teaches that I didn't already know, but it reminds me of those things that I have either forgotten or become too cynical to believe in. It does inspire me to not to give in to the cynicism and try to actually execute on some of these morals. For me, it's honestly about recognizing the importance of people other than myself, not necessarily a specific Aesop. I actually make an effort at being a good friend now. This wasn't the case before I started watching the show.
EpicEnergy 23,219 December 1, 2021 Share December 1, 2021 I didn't really apply the friendship lessons in the show to my life, I just watched the show for entertainment and enjoyment. *totally not up to any shenanigans*
