It bugs me when fanworks spell the Apple family's "I"'s as "ah"

Seriously, their accent isn't that strong. When Applejack and her family speak, you can clearly hear the "I" sound. If you spell it like that, I can't help but hear a super-redneck stereotype voice instead of their normal voice.

While sometimes, it is overused in some fanworks, one of the reasons its used in many fanfics and such is it helps to clearly show a change in which character is speaking due to the different dialect  Especially if the author isn't explicitly saying who is speaking at that moment

I can agree that people exaggerate the Apples' way of speaking. I am not sure why they do it.

It's more in the patterns, and less in the accent. That's how you writing.

I agree with this to some extent. While it is good to show the difference in dialects, the Apple Family may have the accent, but not so much the pronunciation of what is typically viewed as 'southern'. I never hear them shortening words in the show.

I'd say that most of the authors who do this are from other countries other than the USA, purely because I know I do often alter the way the Apple family is written in my stories. I just find it sounds weird when I'm reading it, if the Apples are written in the same way as someone like Rainbow Dash, because I then just read it in a voice that doesn't fit the more southern voice they have. 

 

As I say, that might just be because I'm from the UK more than anything.
