Gambit 74 August 17, 2015 Share August 17, 2015 For some people this won't be surprising at all, but for those uninformed in the topic it might be. 1. You think you're standing still? Think again. Our Milky Way Galaxy is rotating at 225 kilometers per second, and hurling through the cosmos at an estimated 305 kilometers per second. Add those figures together, and we’re racing through space at around 530 kilometers, or 330 miles per second. So in one minute’s time, you’ve traveled almost 20,000 kilometers, or more than 12,000 miles. And your friends always complain that you never go anywhere. 2. One million Earths could fit inside the Sun. Even though there are a lot of stars out there, none is more important to us than our own sun. When compared to other stars, it’s fairly small, classified as a G2 dwarf star. But that doesn’t mean we’re complaining. Approximately one million Earths could fit inside this dwarf star. It might not be the largest star in the universe, but it gets the job done as far as sustaining life on Earth goes. 3. We are made out of stars. Human beings are literally made out of star stuff. Almost all of the chemical elements that make up a person come from the stars. Any element heavier than hydrogen originated in the stars, and we are definitely composed of more than hydrogen. 4. Earth is billions of years old. Our planet has been around for quite some time. It’s been around, in fact, for about 4.54 billion years, give or take 0.02 billion years. Life has only been on the planet for a short amount of time, but the variety of life that has crawled, slithered, swam and trod upon the planet is pretty spectacular — from single celled organisms, to giant sharks and snakes, to dinosaurs, to mammals.
alpinefroggy 451 August 17, 2015 Share August 17, 2015 The schwarzschild radius of the Earth (radius of the mass of earth it would take to make it a black hole) is about the size of a peanut

Sunwalker 981 August 17, 2015 Share August 17, 2015 (edited) The fluorescent lamps use rare earth phosphors as light emitting materials. When electricity pass through the mercury vapor inside the lamp, it emits ultraviolet rays. Those rays excite the rare earths on the lamp's internal coating, which release the energy in form of light. Eu3+ ions emit red light, Eu2+ ions emit blue light, and Tb3+ ions emit green light. With all these three colors combined, our eyes perceives white. Admiral Regulus 2,769 August 17, 2015 Share August 17, 2015 (edited) If you took the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and put them end-to-end, they would just barely fit between the Earth and the Moon. If the entire Moon was nothing but water, and all that water was added to the oceans, sea level would rise by about 26 to 27 miles.
