A question to the "pony reviewers"

Summer Wish

Recommended Posts

Now perhaps I am just an old soul. And before I begin, don't get me wrong, I love several online reviewers/ranters/haters (Thank you Super best friends play, you make me swoon in nostalgia at just how bad the games from my pup-hood where, lol). That being said, here we go, lets look at the horse famous folks!

Up to this point, honestly I have not really minded the swing/sway of the "famous" pony reviewers. If its the recently debunked Digibrony (or whatever his name is this week) the fan boy having KP or my personal fav, Silver Qull. All have taken alot of time, effort and ALOT OF WORK to create videos, written blogs and other forms of digital thoughts and opinions on assorted episodes. For that I do not doubt, they have earned all that the fandom gives them.

They are our "voices". Our key-poles at cons, and those we seek to nod along with, boo and hiss at, or squee when we or they share opinions on a particular topic.

But after viewing SQ's review of "Slice of life", i found myself with a cocked head at his response.

Sure, post viewing the episode for the 1st time (no spoilers on my part), i wanted every pony to see it, point at all the fan shout outs and cheer over all the nerdy BS we spend money getting tshirts made of.

Now as time has passed, i still enjoy the episode and it is still one of my top five of the series. And yes while many viewers jumpped on the bandwagon to bash the episode, SQ took his time and made well thought out points, but in the end still seemed to digitally shake his head in dissapointment.

But this IS NOT ABOUT EPISODE 100.

This is perhaps more about say episode 3, or 26.

In short, has time worn down our "voices", have folks like Soundspeed or Pony Codero who have taken just getting drunk with friends and ranting about "Brad" or 'Twlight being a living weapon" found a new home in place of the drawn out over analyzed rants about story structure or plot development?

The community is still rabid, but seems to be changing.

Just an observation

It's just that the show has changed a lot. As wrong as it was for Digibro to have such unrealistically high expectations of MLP under a jaded perception influenced by his "thousands of hours of anime" viewing that he proudly flaunts, he had a good point when he said early in Season 4 that said season was "harder to analyze".

It's hard to keep up with a constantly evolving show. When I did reviews of this show on this site, I tried as hard as I could to maintain fairness by judging every episode based on each one's individual intention and how well it achieved that with plot, characters, and such. I go based on the philosophy that the message of the episode comes first, then the plot and character interactions must uphold that. Some reviewers like Digibro and Tommy Oliver instead expected a tighter plot and continuity out of this show and as a result, they ended up fooling themselves.

However, as the show went on, it tried bigger things. It did more mature morals, comedy, action, etc. It's hard to look at how this show has changed, especially at the rate it has since "Magical Mystery Cure", and hold it to Season 2 expectations. Our expectations are more often being toyed with, and many reviewers are really having a hard time keeping up with that. At least, that's how I'm seeing it, partly from my own experiences.

As the show's changed over time and deconstructed many of its own concepts, it's become more subjective about what kind of episode each person prefers. I once aligned with what Tommy Oliver expected out of an episode until he began crapping the fandom and holding anime-equivalent expectations to the show; that is a workable slice-of-life moral that takes full advantage of the potential of the show's setting and medium.

I think it's more that people are relying less on MLP reviewers to decide their opinion on episodes. I've recently unsubbed most MLP reviewers in my subscription list because I want to make my own opinion on an episode rather than feel bad for liking an episode they didn't.

I will say I don't like how their fans treat these reviewers as if they're some kind of spokespeople for the fandom's opinion on episodes. They're not. They're just people with opinions. Don't take what they say to heart too much because they have different standards than you. It doesn't help that I go around and see people's reviews on episode just parroting their reviews. It really stunts your ability to think for yourself if you have to rely on someone else for your opinion.

I noticed people relying on them less when last year, people started calling them out which was led with mixed results. Some took it to heart and others threw tantrums. Maybe it's due to people not being able to handle different opinions but I don't know. It's funny that people like MsAnthro Pony got a lot of subs quickly for doing rants on certain members of the analysis community. It kind of shows how some people are sick of them.

Well said, perhaps I am just an old Roleplayer who takes every single action layed before him and adjusts the story to that action. I am more now then ever in love with what MLP is, and Ive been watching since 89.

To use a internet meme, "moooooooaaaaaaaaaar!"

One Pegasis opinion.

I never understood why people even cared in the first place for them. They were just a bunch who reviewed episodes and latter on descended into cirlcle jerking and horse famous mode.

I don't watch alot of those reviewers. I think the only reviewers i watch are LZRD WZRD, Silver Quill, Dr.Wolf and Mr.Enter.  I think it's wrong to call them voices of something, because i would rather like to have my own voice, instead of just saying something that somebody else does.

Yes, the show has changed. But in my eyes it has not changed when it comes to quality. Shows need to evolve themselves, or else they grow stale. I rather want to have a show that takes risks and has 2 or 3 really bad episodes every season, instead of a show that plays it safe and gives us average episodes every season.
