Lexamena 391 September 20, 2015 Share September 20, 2015 (edited) Right now I'm in a bit of a conundrum. I purchased an item on eBay. The seller has 100% positive feedback and has not had a single neutral or negative feedback for over a year. Stated on the listing, the seller usually ships 2 to 4 business days. My experience has been bad in my opinion. I paid immediately after purchasing as I always do. The seller printed a label on the last business day of handling. The tracking didn't update for over 48 hours after that. I contacted seller who said they had to work over time and couldn't ship but they would ship that very day. After 72 more hours, the tracking finally updated to accepted at 4:15am on Sunday (today). So clearly, the seller didn't drop it off at 4am on Sunday but there's no way to know if she really shipped the day of my email or not. Even if she did, she technically barely missed the handling time stated in the listing. If she didn't, she definitely went over the handling time and could miss eBay's estimated delivery date by 5 business days. Now shipping could take another 8 days meaning it could end up being 18 days from the day I paid to the day I receive my item. In contrast, I purchased a very similar item from the same distance away, item using the same shipping method, and that seller had the item at the carrier within one business day and the delivery date is estimated well within a reasonably expected time frame. So, I completely realize that everything surrounding shipping is estimated but I feel very compelled to leave honest feedback for seller #1, which would be neutral at best, but especially if shipping misses ebays estimated delivery date. I feel like I must be being unreasonable since all other feedback for that seller is positive and talks about super fast shipping. Anyways what would you do? Put a black mark on a perfect record and be honest about your experience and expectations? Or suck it up as being largely out of the sellers control? Moonlight 7,286 September 20, 2015 Share September 20, 2015 Depends on what you want to do, delivery estimates are that, just estimates and shouldn't be taken as absolute. However that handling time sounds absolutely ridiculous and if you want to leave negative feedback mentioning the handling time then I don't blame you. It's also important to note that if you got free shipping then you have to give 5/5 stars to the shipping and handling time if you leave feedback. Once the seller ships out the item, whatever happens (or how long it takes depending on what shipping company they shipped with) during the shipping time is out of their control. If you want to leave negative/neutral feedback that's up to you. Personally, I'm not sure what I would do, I'd most likely leave a neutral rating at best as long as I got the item within a month (In all my years of ordering off ebay I've never had to leave a bad/neutral rating), you're supposed to be honest in feedback since that's what it's for. The only time I would leave a negative rating is if I never got the item I paid for. matching setups with my bff pathfinder
Envy 6,168 September 20, 2015 Share September 20, 2015 I'm very easy on sellers, as long as the item arrives in a decent amount of time, is as described and not damaged. Sellers are people, and aren't always going to be perfect. Sorry, this probably doesn't help at all. >.< Everything needs more woodwind!
-Nobody- 519 September 21, 2015 Share September 21, 2015 I'd probably just leave neutral feedback, unless the item is damaged. Or just don't leave any feedback at all. I'm just nobody at all...
Lexamena 391 September 21, 2015 Author Share September 21, 2015 I'm leaning more and more towards the neutral feedback, only mentioning the long handling time and going over by a couple of days. I'll wait until delivery and see how I feel. I want to point out that the shipping method is media mail in both cases. One is sitting in an Internet-labelled black hole, Bell Gardens. And the other is in the other Internet-labelled black hole, jersey city. Im right in the middle. I'm hoping the packages get moved out soon cuz I've read some horror stories online about them. Also, I intend to request a different shipping class on any future book orders.

Silver Letter 1,832 September 21, 2015 Share September 21, 2015 Give them a bad review. I take no excuses when it comes to stuff like this. Either you ship when you say you will or you don't. I cancelled a purchase somebody agreed to make of one of my items because two days had passed and no money was paid. Failure to pay gets it cancelled. If it's bad enough, report them. Lexamena 391 September 23, 2015 Author Share September 23, 2015 Believe it... Or not. The item from slow shipper #1, it delivered today, on THE last estimated day of shipping determined by eBay which was based on the day the label was printed. THAT means an automatic 5 star rating for shipping! Ugh! So it delivered 'on time' technically and Im happy about that. But personally, the uncertainty around the label printing and when it ships, and all that.... I would have deducted at least one star for that. I think it's lucky that it delivered on time actually. Just one delay at the hub facility could have made the difference of a day or more. But anyways, that'll teach me a lesson in patience!

Lexamena 391 September 23, 2015 Author Share September 23, 2015 (edited) Oh man. This just gets better. I just opened the box when I got home from work. This listing was for a set of first edition/early print books from the 40s and 50s from a single author. There were 10 books in the lot. Four were described in the listing as first prints, which is what I am collecting. One of the titles described as first print in the listing is in fact not a first print, and it happens to be the one title that made me buy the lot to start with. Do I leave neutral feedback stating I didn't get the item as described, or contact the seller....there really no way to reconcile because first prints of this title are non existent. Which is why I thought this "first printing, poor quality, reading copy" might be legit because, the seller said it was. It would stand to reason that if one were in this lot, it would likely be in poor quality which is fine with me. No I didn't ask for supplemental photos beforehand, why would I, if the seller is trustworthy? Now what? Edited to add: I'm pretty sure the seller knew it was not a first print because there were photos of two of the other three first print books' copyright pages, indicating she had the wherewithal to show the proof of first printing. Damn me and my trusting nature. Edited September 23, 2015 by Lexamena
Twilight Dirac 721 September 24, 2015 Share September 24, 2015 (edited) I have been using eBay for well over a decade. One thing I can tell you for certain is that the feedback system is an absolute joke. Sellers with 100% positive feedback can and will ship slowly, pull bait and switch techniques, list items that they don't have, never ship, or ship fraudulent, pirated and counterfeit items. Feedback manipulation is just that easy, and the eBay community as a whole has almost come to expect positive feedback as a right because of gross feedback score inflation. It can make shopping on eBay really frustrating. If it wasn't really easy and cheap to get all manner of exotic items on eBay, I would have long stopped dealing with them because of the rampant fraud that permeates the whole site. As is, any purchase you make is a calculated risk because eBay is so saturated with scam artist. If first prints were promised but not delivered this is a bait a switch scam, and at the very least the seller deserves negative feedback. Now if you can live with the fact that you didn't get first prints, leave it at that. However, if having the first prints was the main reason for making this purchase, you should dispute the purchase and demand a refund through Paypal (the Paypal refund is really the only form of purchase protection you have on eBay as feedback ratings are worthless). However, make sure you collect evidence of your claims before disputing the purchase. Save a copy of the auction page and those photos you mention in your edit to your hard drive. Also take pictures of the prints you were mailed so you can provide eBay dispute resolution with side by side comparison. Get anything and everything you can to prove your case before making your dispute. But do act quickly, you only have a limited time, I think 60 days from the time of purchase, to file a dispute before you are no longer eligible for a Paypal refund. This is one of the reasons I think many fraudulent sellers drag their feet when shipping the item. Good luck.
