Is there a reason Twilight and Spike are both purple?

When you introduce the first two characters to open up first lines of dialogue you want them to flesh each other out. A way to make them appear distinguished from one another is to make them appear different from another such as color. But why was Twilight and Spike both purple from the start?

 

Sure Spike's egg was purple but could it be Spike was effected by Twilight's purple magic when he hatched from it?

When the main six were all works in progress, they had different colour schemes. Rainbow Dash for example was pink and had the colour scheme of "Firefly" Faust's favourite pony from the original show. Pinkie Pie was white.

 

Some of the colour schemes were changed because they couldn't get the copyrights for certain ponies hence why "Firefly" became Rainbow Dash in FiM. (The original RD is alot like Rarity is now lol)

 

A few other ponies take their colour schemes from previous ponies and there was another Twilight Sparkle in one of the earlier shows.

Most likely for color relation. Twilight is purple, with Spike being purple it makes an easy correlation between the two. Sure it can make a harder color distinction, but most know that Spike does not live with Applejack or Rainbow for example, We know he lives with the purple pony Twilight, to put it in a very simple perspective. Honestly I never really thought of this before so it is a good question.
