ELRealBoredmario64 24 April 26, 2012 Share April 26, 2012 (edited) How smart are insects really? Chimps are known for being the smartest animals on earth but what makes them speical?Do they build,do they farm, do they capture slaves do they wage war?I don't think so. There is no other animal that can do any of that!Besides US...or insects. Check this interesting link:http://quotations.hubpages.com/hub/Intelligent_Ants Anyway, Ants,Wasps,Termites,Bees all do things that we do. They farm They wage war http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhxsaBMk8lg&feature=relmfu Some ants, termites and even bees have their own battle tatics. What really is intelligence? Is intelligence about having a big brain or how you use it?We have more things incommon with insects then chimps, thats a fact.I will have to say that insects are smarter then what ppl think. seriously though, what other animal would deliberately sacrifice him/her self for a ruler(their queen) or city(their colony), other animals flee if they get injured. Not ants or termites they'll stay and fight untill they drop. As a further note.Yes ants do sleep, but only for a 60 seconds. lol Edited April 27, 2012 by ELRealBoredmario64
Starshine 16,334 April 26, 2012 Share April 26, 2012 Dear lord I shivered a mighty one at the 1st video I don't know much about chimpanzees, but once I read somewhere that they also now to attacks another group, even deliberately crippled their enemies and left them to die. But they never enslave anyone...yet. We have more things incommon with insects then chimps, thats a factI rather doubt that similarities goes beyond our affinities to kill others that doesn't share home with us tho
Swordfishtrombone 384 April 26, 2012 Share April 26, 2012 Some primates are known to do single-file sneak assassinations at night to gain land. And general land fighting. Plus some baboons have been observed capturing dogs and using them as lesser members of the gang they've set up. (citation needed)

ELRealBoredmario64 24 April 26, 2012 Author Share April 26, 2012 I rather doubt that similarities goes beyond our affinities to kill others that doesn't share home with us tho I have to agree.Ants and termites are more civil within their own communities. It's sad how we the animal with the complex brain can't pull something off an insect can. Starshine 16,334 April 26, 2012 Share April 26, 2012 But those ants and termites spend all of their lives as a mindless drone. Incapable of love and creative thoughts :/

Kaborer 164 April 26, 2012 Share April 26, 2012 In my old class we asked on of our teachers which animal was the most clever one. He said sperm whales are the most clever animal, since they can communicate and some other things I can't remember. On topic though, ants, as far as I know, aren't very clever on their own, but as a tribe or what you would call it they can be compared to humans. Humans being more like ants than any kind of ape is not right, though. We have seen apes use tools to get to food and invent small systems on their own and that is most likely what humans did, invent and evolve. we can even see that very early species of humans used tools. Tools are the keyword, the ability to use thing for more than they are usually for. Thanks to Proenix on deviantart for the vector in my avatar and signature. Tom The Diamond 1,830 April 26, 2012 Share April 26, 2012 Damn nature, you scary. 0.o But seriously, its amazing how insects with brains smaller then dust are smarter then most of the US youth. Also, I was looking around and found this neat documentary on youtube about an ant colony's growth and such, and it's pretty interesting. You should definetly check it out. Now excuse me as I stock up on ammo and prepare for the Ant uprising.
Strafe 594 April 26, 2012 Share April 26, 2012 (edited) If insects ever grow to an enormous size then we would be screwed. I know this may be weird but I kind of have respect for them. Bugs have no fear; they are always willing to fight to the end. Edited April 26, 2012 by Strafe "The Gods envy us. They envy us because we’re mortal, because any moment might be our last. Starshine 16,334 April 27, 2012 Share April 27, 2012 http://www.scientifi...s-have-feelings ...these behavioral and neurochemical tests reveal an unexpected dimension of bee cognition. Scientifically, we can say that bees have a persistent state of negative affect that is triggered by agitation, associated with system-wide changes in neurotransmitters and causes clear, measurable cognitive biases. Yep. We're lucky those creepy-ass insects won't get any bigger
Marcusaralius76 150 April 27, 2012 Share April 27, 2012 It's not an individual will though, it's a collective "hive mind" created by the queen before they're born. At least that's the theory.
SrFrog 927 April 27, 2012 Share April 27, 2012 Well, I don't know it just seems like instinct to me. Though to be fair they do poses a rather complex system of shall I dare say most everything.
