Everything that happens in the series is canon, right?

We have seen FiM referenced in EQG several times, but they have never referenced EQG in FiM,  that basically tells me that they want to keep a link between the two for the sake of EQG, which relies on its parent franchise, but at the same time they want to keep EQG at arms length from FiM for FiM's sake.  So basically, FiM is canon in the EQG universe, but not the other way around.

The notion that Equestria Girls isn't canon remains a very legitimate position. FiM has gone almost out of its way to deny that any Equestria Girls film has happened.

Case in point, the portal. It's now in Twilight's castle, presumably in her library, and yet not once did we see it throughout season 5, despite seeing her library multiple times. Something like that would have been "be all, end all" confirmation of its canonicity. And yet, it wasn't there, nor was there even the slightest reference to the films to be found in all of season 5.

The films can make all the references to the show that they want, but at the end of the day, all that proves is that FiM is canon to Equestria Girls (which should be obvious anyway). It DOES NOT prove the opposite.

So yes, as far as I'm concerned, Equestria Girls is non-canon to FiM and it will remain that way until I see evidence to the contrary.

You can ignore things as long as they don't have any real impact on the show.

The staff says EQG is canon due to them considering it a learning experience for Twilight, but really it's pretty easy to ignore for those who don't like it, even with Flash Sentry's appearances. The only way I can ever see it becoming truly canon is if Sunset makes some sort of return to Equestria

I always like comparing EQG to Metal Gear Rising, which is in a similar situation. The creators have said that the game takes place in the official timeline, but because it doesn't have any impact on the series proper, it can be ignored for those who may not like itand if you don't like MGR what the hell is wrong with you?
