Was Spike's origin right in front of our face the whole time?

Where did Sunbutt get Spike's egg? Who are Spike's parents? These are common questions that the fndom have been asking since season 1, when Spike was relaying the story of his entire life to Fluttershy. And with more frequency and frustration since "Dragon Quest"

But could the answers we sought have been under our nose the whole time?

Logically, for Sunbutt to have a dragon egg, she would've had to ecounter a dragon who would've probably given it to her for safe keeping, or found it in an empty dragon nest. I doubt anypony could just get a dragon egg by mail order, since nopony even knows about dragons or their behavior/biology, etc.

In the Journal of the Two Sisters is the only time we see Sunbutt in the presence of a dragon before Spike is born. Before i continue, i want to point out an interestingly curious development in Spike....that being he's been the savior of the Crystal empire twice now.

Why is that important? Well, interestingly enough, the dragon Sunbutt met with had its lair in the Crystalline Mountain that is where the crystal heart had been mined from. The dragon told Sunbutt that he didn't care about what happened to the Crystal ponies who were in peril without the Crystal Heart. And as for Spike- it's no secret that Sunbutt has used magic on him to enable the letter transfer we see in early seasons.

Either Spike was found as an egg in this dragon's hoard, tying him to the empire by relation, and he becomes savior of it, caring for the Crystal ponies, unlike his parent. Or Sunbutt has another enchntment on Spike, having put an age spell on the dragon she met in the Journal, some time later, reverted him to an egg, and allowed a pony to hatch him, befriend him, and later become the savior of the empire ponies to really care for them, when he hadn't before.

I find it pretty strange that the entrance exam that Twilight attempted were to use a live dragon egg as a test subject. Could they had chosen a much more different approach? I hope there's more to the origin of Spike's egg in future episodes.

I doubt Celestia herself took the egg. More than likely some special agent or collector may have gotten it for her magic school or something. Even still, it's really out of character for protagonists to "steal" an egg from another creature, even if it is a dragon. Perhaps there's something deeper here, like his egg was just found by someone, or his parents gave it up. Either way, I would love to hear it.

it's hardly out of character. Ponies have been theiving from dragons and controlling other species since Sunbutt's time

Dragonshy-kicking a dragon out its cave, and Rarity wanting to steal from him

Preventing natural dragon instinct and growth by taking Spike's hoard away

Upcoming s6 episode- Rarity wanting to kick dragons off Dazzle Island, so she can take them to use for fashion

Journal of the two Sisters- crystal ponies stealing Crystal heart from the Dragon's hoard, geting mad aand sending Sunbutt, when dragon steals it back

Sunbutt could've easily stolen the egg from the dragon, oo

Oooh I like your thinking here. I really need to break down and read this tale of two sisters some time, people always seem to reference this thing.

thanks. I suggest that you get the book. It was written in collab with Lauren Faust, so it's completely, irrefutable canon.
