Shadow walked through the crowd until he found an arena that was out of the way. He walked in to see sparring dummies and targets. He removed his lanyard and cloak, then set them down. He opened a portal and pulled out a giant sword, then he started practising on the dummies

"Renting's free for tournament fighters." Second Sight explained with a full of his claw. "Now, shoo."

A crackling sound was heard throughout the arena through seemingly invisible megaphones. "THE OPENING CEREMONY WILL BEGIN IN A FEW MINUTES TIME. SPECTATORS PLEASE PROCEED TO THE SEATING AREA. CONTESTANTS, PLEASE GATHER AT THE CENTRE OF THE ARENA."

Copper was excited, but disappointed that he wouldn't be able to practice with the pony that wanted to train with him.  "Guess we won't be practicing any time soon," he said.  He trotted out of the renting area with only his back hooves, as he had to hold the trident on his back.  

 

He managed to find the arena and the center of it.  He trotted over to it and sat down, waiting patiently for the other fighters to arrive.

"Yeah, ah guess our match is gonna hafta wait," said Redwood.

 

She proceeded to the center of the arena with the rest of the contestants. Redwood was curious about what these opening ceremonies would entail. She was hoping they would be quick though, as she wasn't a fan of ceremony.

Shadow looked up from the carnage of dummies. He grabbed the lanyard, the throwing knives he could salvage, and his cloak that cover his entire body, then walked to the main arena. When he got there he placed the throwing knives into his pouch and his sword into a portal, then waited.

Blitz overheard the announcement and simply gave a slight smirk. "I wonder who I'll be fighting first." He thought to himself. The bat pony felt more excited than he had been in months.

 

Gale made her way to the stadium, not really taking the time to talk to anypony. The last thing she needed was more attention directed at her.

Photon Jet heard the announcement and headed to the center arena straight away. Luckily, he knew where the center arena entrance was when the pink stallion barred him from entry.

 

He done some final checks to see if his jet suit is working properly and dashed off to the location.

The rabble from the spectators was near deafening as the participants gathered in the arena. Creatures of different races chattering among themselves and judging the contestants standing in the middle of the abnormally large arena. Bets were already beginning to be placed. 

 

Suddenly, trumpets blared from invisible speakers, the kind that signals the arrival of somepony important. A moment later,  a white unicorn: Excalibur, emerged from balcony at the top of the arena. The pony raised a hoof for silence. Those whom were veterans to attending the tournament quickly quieted down, and ushered those around them to do so. Eventually, the whole crowd fell into an anticipating silence.

 

Excalibur cleared his throat, a voice amplification spell crackling to life. "Testing one two three..." he trailed off, his hoof instinctively tapping the air in front of him, as if tapping a mic. 

 

He swallowed.

 

"Welcome to the 500th Grand Tournament" he called out, a small cheer erupting from the tournament's more enthusiastic attendees. "I'm sure you all are very excited to see some legendary brawls between the greatest of heroes from all over. Yes, minotaurs, cats, ponies, dragons. It may be rather violent, but have you ever seen so many races get along in one place?" he asked with a uneasy smile.

 

Nevertheless, the audience cheered in response. 

 

"Well then.." he coughed, "Before we proceed, it is tradition to honor the reason this arena stands in the first place. It's history. The legend of the Grand Tournament...". Excalibur's expression turned solemn for a second.

 

The crowd fell in an uneasy silence. Some with short attention spans already began 'booing' loudly, only to be silenced again quickly by other spectators.

 

"Which can be purchased paperback at the souvenir shop for 10 bits!" he finished, his face lighting up to one of amusement. The crowd cheered once more, pumping their tankwrds into the air. Excalibur grinned. "Now, let's go over the tournament itself..."

 

 

 

How the tournament works ( This entire portion is said by Excalibur with lack of narrative, so yeah...)

 

The tournament follows a point scoring system. You score points when you win 'events' that take place in the surrounding arenas and beyond. You may score points the following ways....

 

1. Participating in Monster battles

 

Our staff will summon a monster from dimensions beyond our comprehension for you to fight. Your performance in the battle will determine the number of points you are awarded at the end of it. Oh, and did I mention that you can choose to fight monsters solo or in a group! Yes, work with your fellow enemies to take down stronger monsters!

 

2. Standard or group duels

 

Occasionally, you will be matchmade to fight against another fighter with around the same number of points as you. The winner will gain points. However, you are allowed to challenge others. Should they accept, the match WILL be ranked so long as the match takes place on arena groundsm which can be ANY of the surrounding arenas or this one.

 

You may also have team battles, which are similar to standard battles, except its one team against the other.

 

3. Free for alls

 

This one's a crowd favourite. A large group of combatants will be selected to have an all-out brawl to the last one standing.

 

 

Well, now that's settled, the champion of the tournament would obviously be the one with the most points! They will be awarded a prize worthy of their merit, and trust me, it won't disappoint. 

 

*Chuckle*. Now, I hear you ask, 'How are you going to track all of this when you're already grossly understaffed?' Simple! COMBATANTS! See your entry pass? Hold up the card on it and tap whatever you think is the front surface with whatever appendage you possess!

 

( Excalibur holds up the stone tablet attached to the lanyard of his own and taps it. )

Copper put a hoof on his chin as he heard the rule set and the fact that there was a so-called 'iStone', which apparently was on his spiky mane.  He took it from the mane and tapped at what he thought was the front surface.  He was surprised to see a lot of apps on the device.  He nodded in approval of the device, then put it back on his mane.  "Yeah, I do have a question." he called to the announcer.  "Are we still able to have practice matches during this whole thing?"

Shadow looked around at the crowd, his shadow flickering as he messed with it. He took a step forward and said as he moved his cloak slightly for his metal claw to come out and removed his hood,

Blitz gave a slight smirk as he moved his hoof along the ground. There was no specific pattern to the movements, but that was what anypony who didn't know him would think. "Vincit qui patitur." He muttered under his breath. He would probably have to wait a bit before showing what he was truely capable of, but it would be worth it to see the looks on everypony's faces.

Photon Jet was intrigued when he saw the iStone being introduced. The thing looked so futuristic and it could even compete with his electric powered suit.

 

Then, a question flung into his head. "When did you come with that amazing contraption?" he asked Excalibur.

Redwood swiped the front of her iStone like she had been instructed, and the various apps that had been promised appeared.

 

"What kinda fancy contraption is this?" she asked to nobody in particular.

 

First the advanced gear and now this. The arena never ceased to amaze her.

Excalibur raised his hooves. "No no, I didn't make it. The iStone is a product of Pear Inc., whom has generously sponsored us with their products for testing.

"Yes, you'll be allowed to practice, just keep it off an official tournament arena so your iStone doesn't record it. In fact, why don't we start the tournament with an exhibition match right now?!" Excalibur grinned. The crowd cheered in approval.

 

"Besides, it'll be a good opportunity for you guys to learn how to use the iStone to challenge other combatants. Opening the leaderboard will give you a list of combatants. Tapping their name will bring up a window with their tournament info and a couple of buttons. Here, you can either 'chat' with them via instant letters or challenge them. Simply tap the corresponding button."

 

The edges of the circular arena flashed purple for a second.

 

"Once you and your opponent enter an arena, a prompt will appear on your iStones asking if you're ready. When you and your combatant ready up, the arena will become locked for the combatants only. There is a queue system in place for combatants who wish to use the arena after you finish. Test the feature now."

Shadow walked to the wall and said as he took the lanyard off, 

"Anyone could choose for me on who or what to fight. I don't really care if it intelligent or a basic monster."

He scrolled up on the device and looked at the leaderboards, then he shut it off and placed it around his neck.

Copper didn't have any trouble starting up his system first.  He found the leader board with his name and the others, and found Redwood's name, the pony who wanted to take a match with him first.  He pressed on the name, and then tapped challenge.  He was eager to test his skills in battle.

After taking a few minutes to figure out her iStone, Redwood accepted Copper's challenge. She proceeded to load the fire crystal into the Appleoosa Buster 2.0, as she had decided to call it, and powered up her shield. Lastly, she pressed the ready button on her iStone.

 

"Ah'm ready when y'all are," said Redwood.

*Exhibition match: Redwood vs Copper Strikes: START*

 

The arena glowed purple, and all other living entities in the arena were teleported to a nearby balcony overlooking the place in a purple mist, leaving only Redwood and Copper in the arena.

 

Their entry passes drifted into the sky. A second later, a rotating holographic display appeared in the sky, displaying the combatant's names, and a ( for now ) green circle was next to their names, indicating their status. A computerised voice was heard. "1 on 1 duel. UNRANKED EXHIBITION MATCH. Red side < Redwood > is ready. Waiting for confirmation from Blue side < Copper Strikes >. Arena: pillars."

 

Four large stone columns rose from the ground in the arena, each the width of a truck and the height of a coconut tree. 3 of them formed some sort of triangle around the arena while the 4th one stood in the middle. However, given the arena's space, there was plenty of room in between.

Copper smirked as he got up on two hooves, holding the trident in a battle-ready stance.  He was thrilled to fight, but before confirming his start, he looked around the arena, getting a good feel of his surroundings.  Once he was finished, he threw his free hoof in the air and shouted, "READY!"  He then resumed his battle stance.

Redwood got into a fighting stance before Copper had even confirmed that he was ready. He was using electric based attacks, which her shield was vulnerable to, so she would need to put up an unrelenting offense.

 

Redwood began firing at Copper the second he had confirmed he was ready. She couldn't let him get any ground.

Copper jumped out of the way as soon as he saw Redwood fire her gun.  It was clear she didn't want him to go on the offensive.  He knew that once she stopped firing, it would be time for her to reload, and that was a perfect time to Spin Dash to her.  Once he saw that opening, he launched himself to Redwood and started using his trident against Redwood.

Blitz smirked as he watched Redwood and Copper begin to fight. They were giving information to their opponents, and he was definetly one to use that against them. The cloaked pony then sat down in one of the chairs on the balcony and watched. "If they want to give away their tactics, let them." He thought.

Once he was finished, he threw his free hoof in the air and shouted, "READY!" He then resumed his battle stance.

A silence hung in the air for a while. Well, for a few seconds. The giant holographic screen turned to face directly at Copepr Strikes. The computerised voice was heard again. It spoke to Copper. "You know, usually, you'd have to press the 'ready' prompt that appears on your device, not shout it out. But I'll save you the embarassment."

 

The voice, while distorted, somehow managed to maintain a condescending tone. ( I've decided to make the voice sound like GlaDOS )

 

"Both sides are ready. Battle will automatically end once a serious injury is inevitable, if one side surrenders, or if a combatant's status reaches a critical level. Please refrain from decapitating your opponent: time reversal spells put a huge strain on the tournament's budget. Good luck and have fun."

 

A low boom reverberated across the arena. The crowd fell silent.

 

"Battle begins in 3... 2... 1...."

 

*Trumpet noises*

Copper was the first to move as soon as the trumpets have sounded.  He ran with only two hooves-holding the trident with his forehooves- not caring about the embarrassment given to him.  He grinned as he set his eyes towards his opponent, Redwood, as he started to strike with his trident.

Redwood tried to roll out of the way of the trident strikes, electing to save her shield for when she really needed it since it would go down quick from the trident's electricity.

 

Redwood then began a barrage of fire from her weapon in an attempt to pin Copper down.
