movies/tv The Witch 2016, is the hype real?

I have craved a serious witch movie for a long time. After re-watching Blair Witch Project after so many years, I can safely say it is the best witch movie and I admire it even though no witch is seen in the movie. I despise witch movies for the most part, they're not given the glamor treatment like the 200 zombie movies that exists and vampire movies.

I saw The Wicked(2013) and it was so awful I barely wanted to sit through it. I can sum up the movie as a good concept, teenagers asking for death by harassing the witch's property and getting what they deserve in the end. But even though the witch does gruesome and disgusting things, I  wasn't scared.

I am hearing that The Witch(2016) is a genuine horror movie with no jump scares and it is more about witch folklore. So right now I am intrigued, because it seems we're finally getting a movie like Blair Witch that explores the mythology and true horror of witches.

What turns me off is the 1600s setting. I just don't like the christian witch trial crap and I hope this movie doesn't do that shctick. Witches are not only my favorite monster, I found them terrifying as a kid and want them to get the same love and respect that zombies get.

I need to wait May 17th to rent this movie. Does this movie live up to the reviews? Is it new? Or a rehash of other stuff?

I have heard that overall, this film is quite great, though it might not be what some may expect. From what I know, it really focuses more on the family itself, and less on the witch. The whole movie apparently is loaded with tons and tons of tension, but I have heard that there is not much of a release of that tension anywhere in the movie.

Take that for what it is worth because I have not seen the movie either, but I really want to so I can know for myself. It seems like such an eerie concept for a horror film and I only seen one trailer, yet that trailer made me feel really uncomfortable.

Another one I forgot to mention was 1990's The Witches. I know it's dated, but those witches were spawns of evil themselves and did disgusting and horrid things, the make up design still creeps me out.

I know it will be about the family so I won't let that get to me, I doubt I will hate the movie, it has some things I have wanted in a witch movie.

How can you call yourself a fan of witches without acknowledging the definitive flagship of their movie culture?

All things aside, I haven't heard of this movie, but I do like me a good horror and if it does what you say about delving into the mythology and not relying on cheap jumpscares, I'd like to keep an eye on it.

Hocus Pocus is not a bad movie, I mean sure it has gotten a bit cheesy but that's about it. I actually find it funny the most renown witch movie is not only a comedy, but a Disney movie.
