I feel like fans complain about episodes for no real reason

Well its like good and bad bread. It just depends what you prefer. I personally love the whole MLP world. In my view there is no bad episode ^^. But its good having such an active fanbase dedicated to give ideas .

Actually, there's a noticeable trend in the later episodes, one that mimics the original Powerpuff Girls:

 

When Craig left the PPG show (yes, the original), the episodes dropped in quality. They seemed uninspired, even boring.

 

For me and quite a few others I've spoken to, this is the same case. Lauren Faust left and we feel the episodes have lost their charm. Hell, even the Spike episodes back in seasons 1 and 2 were better than almost anything season 4 had to offer (for context, Spike is my LEAST favorite character). I haven't watched anything past episode 100 because, frankly, it was a chore. The show went in a different direction than what Lauren wanted and I have to say, that I've lost interest in the show.

 

I'm sure there's still a good episode here and there, but I'm not gonna dig through an entire season for just one.

 

But no, it's almost habit to expect a less-than-good episode because that's what we're getting nowadays.
