Here is my latest work, The Newbie. A one-shot for an art trade with Pripyat Pony. So without further ado, here it is!

 

 

 

 

The Newbie

 

 

 

Have you ever had a dream that you've aspired towards all your life? Well I have. My name is Lightning, I'm a light and dark purple Pegasus whose coat is a patched combination of both aforementioned colors, and I have an indigo mane that sticks straight up, and blue eyes. And if you haven't guessed it yet, this is my story.

 

Let's start by going back to my foal-hood, back when my mother, Swift, told me about her time in a flight team called the Cloud Chasers. The thought enthralled me, and from that moment on I knew just what I wanted to do with my life; I wanted to fly on a team like mom, and I had already heard of the Wonderbolts. So that was exactly where I set my sights.

 

In junior high, I wasn't doing what you would call 'stellar' on my schoolwork, but I was doing incredibly well in advanced flight class and sports. This was also when I met Clover, and she roped me into this crazy plan to save another filly from a curse in a town somewhere in The Everfree Forest. But that's a story for another time, now I'm going to tell you what happened when I got accepted into the Wonderbolts.

 

It was a day of average weather conditions, a lovely light blue sky dotted with a couple dozen puffy white clouds, a great day for flying. It was my first day, so I wanted to make a great impression. I trotted across the large floating landmass that was the Wonderbolts' HQ, and was just about to cross the runway when Soarin stopped me before I could put one hoof on the tarmac.

 

"Seriously newbie? Don't forget rule number one: look both ways before crossing the runway." He said, sounding rather pleased with himself. "Wouldn't want our newest member to get all banged up now would we?"

 

I scratched the back of my head with my hoof, "Sorry, I'm still getting used to the rules." ---

 

 

 

Later that day, we were all practicing a new routine. Everypony in a V-shape to start, we were then going to reverse the V, then reverse it again, whoever was in the middle, in this case Spitfire, was going to shoot forward at the end of the last reversal, to emulate a slingshot. That was also the name of the routine, The Slingshot.

 

Now I wanted to make a great first impression, so I was going to be absolutely perfect on this first run. So there we were, twenty-five of us, all standing on the runway in the V-shape, and ready for take off. Spitfire gave the signal, and we all took off. We shot up into the air, starting off at a forty-five degree angle before leveling out and accelerating.

 

"And now!"

 

I heard Spitfire yell from up ahead, and everypony did as we were told. The pegasi in the middle slowing down, and the pegasi on the edges, myself included, sped up. Then that was reversed, but as we were halfway through that, I miscalculated how much I had to slow down. And I bumped into Soarin, who was in front of me, who bumped into Fleetfoot, who bumped into whoever was in front of him, and so on. Until every Wonderbolt was careening out of control. I had really messed up...

 

Now I won't go into all the details, but that was quite the crash. Nopony was seriously hurt, but they weren't too thrilled with me.

 

"Lightning!" I heard Spitfire yell as she got up and trotted towards me. "What is the meaning of this?!"

 

Sweet Celestia was she angry, I was so scared just by the look she was giving me that I stuttered on my response.

 

"I-uh-I didn't s-slow down enough and bumped into Soarin, who bumped into Fleetfoot, who-"

 

"I get it, you don't need to explain it all." She cut me off before I could finish my stupidly long response. But at least she seemed to have calmed down a bit, but she still wasn't very pleased. "Just, don't let it happen again." And with that, she just walked away. ---

 

 

After apologizing to everypony and cleaning the entire compound, I was exhausted. I staggered into my room in the barracks and collapsed onto the bed. Not even caring that I was still in uniform.

 

When the sun came up the next morning, I was still pretty tired, but at least I was rested. I got out of bed and exited the barracks, making my way towards the dining hall. But on the way, I got some interesting good mornings.

 

"Morning Domino!"

 

"Good Morning Domino!"

 

"Hey Domino!"

 

Why were they all calling me Domino?

 

"Hey Soarin, why is everypony calling me Domino?" I asked the pale blue pegasus as he walked by.

 

"Oh, they didn't tell you? That's your new nickname! At least it's got a better ring to it than mine. Haha." He replied, sounding like it was perfectly normal thing.

 

My heart sank and my ears followed suit, "Oh, okay." I said as I began to walk towards the dining hall again.

 

"Hey, wait." He said as I turned away. "Don't let it get you down, count yourself lucky that yours isn't 'Clipper'. And don't even ask why."

 

I stifled a chuckle, "Clipper? Pft, all of a sudden Domino doesn't sound so bad." I felt a little better, maybe this was the next step to fitting in.

 

"Yeah, you wouldn't believe the day I had when I got that one. But I'm not going to tell you just yet, I'll save it for another time."

 

"Okay, thanks Soarin. I'll catch you at breakfast I guess."

 

"Got it, see ya then!"

 

I was finally feeling pretty good about myself, and I could feel that today was going to be better than yesterday!

good story, having domino as a nick name makes me think of the x men character
