lazyd3vil 3 May 16, 2012 Share May 16, 2012 I like to think she's like a chameleon and her eyes can move independantly giving her 360 degree vision and the ability to track two objects at one. (See the Derpy and the lava lamp animation!) As a result she only gets depth perception when she focusses on one thing, which means accidents and tumbles when she's got more than one thing to track. I just loved the lava lamp animation. And I'd like to think that as well, though I'm still not quite 100%...

Eldritch 20 May 17, 2012 Share May 17, 2012 PARTY-POOPER-SCIENTIFIC-MODE-ENGAGE!!! I actually only figured this out because I have the same condition. It's most likely that Derpy suffers from strabismus, " a disorder in which the two eyes do not line up in the same direction, and therefore do not look at the same object at the same time. The condition is more commonly known as "crossed eyes." (Source: PubMedHealth) As for what she sees, her brain will ignore the eye that isn't pointing at what she wants to look at, but her depth perception will be wonky. If it had been caught at an early age, modern surgery can correct it. As it stands, her "passive" eye will be weaker, thought symptoms could be lessened by wearing corrective lenses. It can cause amblyopia if it isn't treated, which is where the one eye loses its ability to see properly or at all. I had to deal with it until I got glasses a few years ago. Since then, I haven't had my eye derp once unless I've really been straining it (reading for extended periods in low light, for example).

This.Though I think the eye would still be like described in the syndrome, it just wouldn't be correctable. And also, she's a pegasus, why would she be in magic class? Silly filly! Eldritch 20 May 19, 2012 Share May 19, 2012 Okay, but what if it would be caused by some sort of trauma? Like an explosion during magic class, or a piano landing on her head? Usually it's genetic (meaning Ditzy's in for it, too), but it can be caused by damage to the brain or eye. Most infants have it to some degree, then it corrects itself as the muscles around the eye mature. This. Though I think the eye would still be like described in the syndrome, it just wouldn't be correctable. And also, she's a pegasus, why would she be in magic class? Silly filly! Yeah, it probably isn't correctable at this point. After a certain point any corrective work is purely cosmetic. You have to catch it pretty early on to make a real difference. As to why she would be in magic class, why wouldn't she be? She seems to have a knack for being where she shouldn't.
