So I killed a butterfly.

Today I was walking to subway when I was startled to see a giant orange furry butterfly lying on the ground struggling to walk. It's wings were badly damaged, and it could barely move it's legs, every time it tried to walk it got blown on it's side by the wind, and it seemed to have what looked like a wound on the end of it's abdomen. I pet it and poked it gently with a stick to see if it was okay, I was certain it was dying slowly and possibly painfully, then found an abandoned oreo bag and put it inside it. Unable to find anyone I knew to help, I walked my way down to subway and took it to the back. By that point, it seemed like it was dead, it only moved it I touched it, and even then, it was barely a leg twitch, otherwise it remained still.

I just couldn't stand to let it die a slow painful death, so, building up lots of courage, I picked up a nearby large piece of cement, and dropped it on the butterfly, then stomped it down with my boot to make sure it died. Was this the right thing to do? I'm not butterfly expert, but I'm pretty sure it was dying and it was probably in pain, I just couldn't watch it suffer anymore. So, did I do the right thing here?

I normally don't like death like this, but you were acting out of mercy, so I guess it was the right thing to do

Hopefully that butterfly is in a better place now

Hopefully, it just seemed like it was in pain, it's big wings were frayed, one of it's smaller wings was almost broken off, and it progressively stopped moving altogether save for a twitch when touched. It took me a while to make the decision to kill it, it was such a beautiful creature, I've never seen a butterfly like it before. What a shame. I still feel kinda bad tho.

You did well, my friend. It was on it's way out, and you saved it the pain.

Well done. ;)

I think I just got a taste of what it's like to be a vet who has to euthanize animals. My god, it must be brutal. I remember my mom telling me after my dog was put down that the vet who did was crying afterwards, and this was a butterfly and it still made me feel bad. Holy crap I never wanna be a vet.

I don't know whether or not to bro-hoof this...

I mean, I generally don't get emotionally attached to things, but I don't think I would like euthanizing anything...

Anyway, as I said before, you made the right choice. ;)

It's funny how when we kill a mosquito or a spider, no one gives a damn but when it's a butterfly it feels like a terrible thing just because it's prettier.

Truth is the butterfly is probably not much more intelligent than the mosquito or the spider. In fact, it's unlikely that its brain is developed enough to even feel pain.

I agree. You acted out of mercy. It was the right thing to do, and i'm sure if butterflies were able to speak, it would have thanked you

Thanks, I just hope I never have to do it again, I don't like having to make moral decisions like that.

Mosquito's are also bloodsucking pests that can carry deadly diseases.

Who knows? But I Think it was safe to assume it did.

By the way, you are right about the mosquito/spider thing.

If I find a bug in the house, I generally try to catch it take it outside before my family kills it (they over react to bugs)

Just the other night my mom had called me up to vacuum a spider on the ceiling, and even tho I grabbed a bottle to try and catch it, she got mad and vacuumed it herself. I don't get it, I just don't get it. Mosquito's are kill on sight for me tho.

Well after a quick google search, i found this.

Butterflies have a nervous system but it is different from people. Butterflies lack the special cells that allow people to know they are feeling pain. Butterflies will have a sensation that something is different, but they will not feel pain like a person experiences. An example is if you hold the leg of a butterfly, it will struggle. If you break the leg off, it will stop struggling and fly away. If the butterfly was feeling pain, it would react differently.

That butterfly was not feeling pain.

I HAD TO FALL TO LOSE IT ALL BUT IN THE END IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER /WRISTS

Oh that's a really nice butterfly.

Still, insect's nervous systems are very different from ours. And while they have cells that will transmit the sensation, they will not feel pain as we do. If you cut a butterfly's leg, it would not react as a human would if you did the same thing to him. The butterfly would know he's missing a leg, but he would consciously feel pain like we would.

So don't feel too bad about this, it wasn't in pain. He was pretty damaged and would've died pretty soon anyway.

I guess thats why we are attracted to MLP. A happier place were people try not to act like that

No pony tried to squish a parasprite. they just wanted to get them out of ponyville

Maybe the butterfly has a fear of death, like most creatures

O_O

You mean to tell me you were able to touch that thing? I think I would literally be scarred for life if it touched me.

I do find it quite hypocritical how people treat butterflies, though. Like my sister. She hates bugs of all kinds, but she likes butterflies. It does not make even the least bit of sense to me. I hate bugs, of all kinds, including butterflies. They are no exception. I do respect their right to live, though.

Oh.....well, it was still dying clearly, it was already pretty much dead at the point that I killed it.
