How exactly do the sun and moon operate in Equestria?

So from what I have seen Celestia rises the sun in a sudden movement causing the sun to come up rather quickly meaning that there would be no dawn or dusk. But I have seen dawn and dusk. Does the sun operate how it does on earth in the same sense that there is still dawn and dusk and Celestia just draws power from the sun?

 

How does her sun easing ability work?
