Introducing the Fan Labor Wiki

Hello. I'm an administrator at the My Little Pony Fan Labor Wiki. The name is a bit unwieldy, but the purpose is not: the wiki aims to catalogue this fandom's productivity, be it in the form of fan art, fan games, videos, music, or fan fiction, among others. It is not a repository (like FIMFiction, the Pony Fiction Archive, or deviantArt), but an encyclopaedia: we host pages which summarise the fandom's activities in any of the many fields which are of interest to the wiki.

 

So I would like to invite everyone here to participate in the wiki; you do not need a wikia account to edit an existing article or even to create a new one. New pages can be created either for your own work or for something else you would like represented on the wiki. All that's asked is that a new article be of reasonable length (250+ words), verifiable (anyone needs to theoretically be able to confirm that a claim on the page is accurate), and opinion-free. Opinions are welcome in the comment sections, of course.

 

Currently, fanfics and similar story-based fan labor dominate the wiki, but there's no rule that they have to. This forum doesn't have a page on the wiki, for instance (nor do any others), but it can. For forum regulars, I imagine it should be quite easy to put together a page; possible areas that could be described include a summary of the forum's various sections (including the mechanics of the roleplaying section), the forum's history, whether there are certain unusual rules and conventions, whether there are any running gags/memes exclusive to this community, ...

 

There's no requirement to create new articles, however. Every contribution matters, no matter how small. If you'd like to help, that'd be greatly appreciated. If the last between-seasons hiatus is any indication, the fandom is going to grow a great deal more until the next new episode, and the wiki has the opportunity to become a central information resource to newcomers, and maybe to more experienced fans as well. If you have any questions (about technical aspects or our few content restrictions), please don't hesitate to ask.

I'm really glad that there's a wiki out there for a fanbase such as that of the show. It will most definitely help sort out things as a database for many contributors and contributions in the fanbase. I owe my ever-lasting gratitude for administrating a website as this one. I wish the site the best of luck in adding more content and becoming more and more of a reliable source of fandom in the future.

Thank you for the nice sentiment, but it's like with Wikipedia: almost everyone thinks it's great and uses it, but most people refrain from adding content themselves. It only works if people contribute to it, though.

 

I can understand that a little in the case of Wikipedia, which has quite strict and sometimes obscure rules and is primarily concerned with the real world. But the Fan Labor Wiki, by comparison, has very few rules and neither notability nor popularity requirements. I won't claim that it's the easiest thing in the world to add something to an article, but there's less of a learning curve than people tend to believe. There are no commitments; nobody needs to register an account to edit or leave a comment. And creating a new page has never been so easy, with help and instructions given for the major types of pages if you start one via the front page.

All of that and more thanks to Wikia's more-than-convenient user interface should mean a very fine future for this wiki among others.
