Accounts mysteriously moving to Guest - Character system changes

Several of you have noticed the occasional user getting switched from active to guest over the last few months. With the help of @Rikifive and @LadyMercury we have been able to restore these accounts, but until recently it’s been a puzzle. A few days ago, I mentioned to Riki a possible shared variable among the affected accounts, all of them use the Characters system.

@Rikifive and I dug deeper and there is a connection with the inactive characters and guests. I believe that the shared code between profiles and characters is causing users who try and use inactive characters to somehow trigger their actual accounts to move to inactive. Since the characters system is a feature built by a third party I don’t have the time to dig into the code to try and figure out where the bug is and try and correct it.

That leaves us with two viable options. Shut off the character system for now to prevent accounts temporarily going to guest, or stop characters from going inactive. For now I decided to change the inactive policy settings to try and allow the character to continue to be used. I will also be sending a notice to the modification creator about the bug. I believe that this workaround will be sufficient for the time being, however I may have missed something in the link between the guest bug and characters. If this bug continues we will need to suspend this feature until we find the issue.

I believe in being transparent so I wanted to give the people who use the system and who have been “guested” an answer and acknowledge that we didn’t brush that issue off.

Again, the character system should be stable and able to be used safely. Your characters that you don’t use will just stay active.  :)
