Princess Ebony Nightingale quietly walked out into the gardens. It was twilight; the time between when Celestia lowered the sun and Luna rose the moon. She looked around the cherry blossom trees and sang a few notes. A few seconds later she was answered by a nightingale. Ebony smiled and walked towards the tree, singing a few more notes. Her red eyes sparkled as she saw the nightingale descend towards her, singing as well. Edited by Aureity

Splinter was watching the shining moon go into the sky on the roof of a Skyscraper in Canterlot. ''Beautiful.'' Said Splinter as smiling at the moon. He flew off the building and began to stroll through Canerlot. He then frowned and remembered a terrible moment. ''No, Not again.'' Said Splinter as holding onto his head. He began to murmur things. He ran to a nearby Garden and hid behind a tree. ''Once you Stare into the eyes of the devil... You can't look back.'' Said Splinter to himself repeatedly. Tears began to roll down his eyes as he pulled out a picture of his brother from his bag.

Not all was well in the land of Equestria. One could say that this was one of the darker nights anypony had experience in a few years. Even as the sun set, the night encroached on the world. The stars seemed afraid to come out lest they be put out. Only the moon rose in the sky, an even then it did so sluggishly. The wind swished through the leaves, causing a constant rustling in the background noise. A lone grey stallion trotted through the night, making his way along the silent streets of Canterlot. In the shadows, he seemed to disappear, with only the stark white checkers of his mane showing. This stallion had a hunted look in his eyes, as if he had not slept for a while. Coming around the corner of a building, he spotted his target destination, one of the various gardens in Canterlot.

A muffled screech from the way he had come only gave Stonewall a moment's pause. Breaking into a sprint, he dashed from building to building. Peeking around the garden wall, he caught sight of a dark mare standing alone. His eyes flared red for a moment in the darkness, the magic building up inside of him. As the mare began to sing, Stonewall crouched down and made his way forward, making sure to keep his charged horn out of sight. When he was just behind the target, he let out a burst of magic into a nearby tree. The nearest birds flocked to the tree, and began a lovely chorus of birdsong. Standing up to his full height, Stonewall came out of the shadow he was hiding in and spoke.

"It is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Stonewall. I don't mean to be presumptous, but I take it that you are the one they call Nightingale?" As he said this, he cocked an eyebrow, his deep fiery eyes glinting.

Splinter looked from behind the tree. ''Ponies are here.'' Said Splinter as popping his head out of the tree. ''Um... Hello!'' Said Splinter as tumbling onto the grass. Tears were still rolling down his eyes. He looked up at the Stallion and Mare. He stared at the Mare as his jaw dropped. His face turned red and his eyes widened.

//sorry, was at school.//

The princess turned and looked at the stallion who'd made the birds sing. She smiled nervously. "I am...pleasure to meet you." She said politely. She looked over when she saw another colt come out from behind a tree. She slightly dipped her head to him in greeting, and glanced at the pegasi as he entered the garden as well. Stay calm...I'm sure they're just being polite. She thought to herself, half smiling nervously.

Artemisia had been wandering among the cherry blossoms when she heard ponys speaking and birds chirping, "Hello there, Je M'appelle Artemisia...I mean my name is Artemisia. The traveling mare was always slipping in and out of tongues, but she still had a distinct Canterlot accent. She looked around the group. "You must be Princess Nightingale, but it is my great sorrow that I do not know the rest of you."

"I only know you Princess, from your visage, I saw a lovely portrait of you in a gallery on third and Hoofington street. My name is Artemisia, I a multilingual pony, that is my talent. I have come to help in the upcoming meetings with many foreign dignitary's." She was hoping to also teach the ponys of the castle about other cultures and languages.

Stonewall looked to each pony as they arrived on the scene. One tumbled out from behind a tree. What the heaven was that machine on the Pegasi's back? Then to round up the situation, a diplomat made an appearance. Both he and the multi-lingual mare seemed to have something to do with the Princess, while the other two were most likely passerby. Another shriek that only he seemed to hear was emitted from the nearby bushes. Eyes flashing red again, he casually put himself inbetween the bush and the Princess. At that moment, something best described as a reptile flew from the foilage. A crimson flash erupted from Stonewall's horn, spiking the massive lizard through the head. It fell to the ground, apparently dazed. Trotting over, Stonewall kicked it with one hoof. Turning back to Nightingale. He smiled in a creepy fashion. "I am here for a slightly different reason. As you just saw, all is not well. Let us go inside out of the night before more show up." He said this more as an order than a request.

Keren was shocked that this Stallion would order the Princess but he seemed to have quite a bit of authority here...she shrugged it off.

"Yes monsieur." She obliged his request and went to her chambers inside the castle.

The princess took a small step back from the thing on the ground. She looked up at Stonewall, her one visible eye frightened. "Yes..inside." She said, looking over her shoulder at the reptile on the ground. She walked next to Stonewall, figuring he knew something about what was going on.

Splinter stared at the picture of his brother in his hand. Red tears began to roll down his eyes. ''Once you stare into the eyes of the devil... You can't look back.'' Murmured Splinter as tears rolled his eyes rapidly.

Stonewall looked back at the Pegasus and crying pony as he shut the door to the castle. It was assumed that they would find their own quarters. After all, the things in the night were not interested in those such as them. When they reached the Princess's rooms, he made sure to lock that door behind him. Turning to the princess he frowned. "My duty Nightingale, is to protect you. I have been sent by my father to assist and guard you while you stay at Canterlot. I will also be your permenant bodyguard from here on out. Apologies for any inconvienence this causes you. As to what is going on, I would recommend talking about it in the morning."

"Please...call me Ebony." She said, the fear in her eyes was accompanied by concern. "It's no inconvenience to me.. " she started. She felt rather safe with him. She shook her head. "Can't you tell me now?" She asked, obviously frightened. "What was that thing?"

Splinter wiped the tears from his eyes and flew onto a nearby building. He sneaked into the building from a window. Three armed Guards were patrolling the area. Splinter smirked and the lights in the room went off. When the lights were back on they were on the floor knocked out. ''Hell Yeah.'' Said Splinter as looting one of the guards. A small earpiece was found on one of the Guards. ''No one will never know.'' Said Splinter as putting the earpiece on his ear. He jumped off the building from the window and landed lightly on the ground.

Stonewall thought for a moment, looking out the window into the dark night. Moving closer to her, he patted her head comfortingly. "While it is something best discussed when there is light, I suppose it wouldn't hurt. What you saw was a creature created to hurt you. As to why, I cannot say. The name for it is a Nix I believe. Now, go to bed, I will be watching over you." With that said, he went to go lay on a padded bench with the bed in plain view. It looked like privacy was going to be sacrificed for now at least.

Ebony slightly blushed when he patted her head. She walked to her bedside and used her magic to remove her crown and necklace. She stepped out of her slippers and looked back at Stonewall. "Thank you." She called to him, half smiling a bit nervously. She lay down in her bed and closed her eyes, hearing a few faint song notes from nightingales in the garden below. Her head swam with thoughts when she closed her eyes. Nix.. she thought, falling asleep.

Needless to say, Splinter did not recieve any answer from the guards stationed inside the door. There were strict rules against visitors after twilight, mainly to ensure the sound sleep of those residing inside. As the night lengthened, lights went out one by one as ponies went to sleep. In the streets of Canterlot, the night life quieted down and dimmed. Like a beam, the first ray of light broke over the horizon as morning dawned. All the while, Stonewall had been sleeping with one eye on the Princess. As the light penetrated the light drapes covering the windows, he stood and stretched. Walking over to the bed, he picked up the sleeping mare's tiara to examine it.
